Doctor Who and The Twilight Zone

For consistency with Doctor Who, whose two runs are listed together, I have consolidated the four different runs of The Twilight Zone (the original CBS run, the 1980's CBS run, the one season in syndication, and the one season on UPN) into one listing. Although the second and third runs are sometimes called "The New Twilight Zone", the on-screen title was still just "The Twilight Zone". --Psiphiorg 21:07, 2 August 2006 (UTC)

SNL

I don't see Saturday Night Live on this list. It is in Season 32, with 623 or so episodes, according to Wikipedia. (JosephASpadaro 19:31, 15 May 2007 (UTC))

I added it in. If that show is not considered "prime time" episodic, someone can remove it. Thanks. (JosephASpadaro 19:42, 15 May 2007 (UTC))

This list is hideously short!

I am not saying it is a pointless list - it may actually be pointless but I love it! - however it is lacking in SO many series that it either needs to be seriously updated or removed. For one thing, Thames TV's "The Bill", a prime time series both in the UK and Australia (and several countries in Europe) has well over 2000 episodes. Most soap operas have thousands of episodes, which are both episodic and, in the case of "Home And Away" and "Neighbours" in Australia and "Coronation Street" and "East Enders" in the UK, are most certainly in prime time. In fact, a good reference list for this list can be found here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_longest_running_TV_shows_by_category KatCassidy (talk) 16:35, 26 December 2007 (UTC)

I am going to be working on this list for a while, to make it longer Afkatk (talk) 00:47. 22 December 2008 (UTC)

Add years

This is a great page. Can anyone add the beginning and ending years for each of the series runs? I think it's relevant to the Chart. (JosephASpadaro 19:23, 15 May 2007 (UTC))

I'm currently working on adding in the Years Broadcasting Collumn on the chart it should be up in a bit Afkatk (talk) 03:13. 22 December 2008 (UTC)

Tonight Show

What is the number for the Tonight Show on NBC? --Richard Arthur Norton (1958- ) (talk) 00:19, 20 January 2009 (UTC)

There are over 4000 episodes according to my Dish Network program guide. I don't remember the exact number as of last night, though. ···日本穣? · Talk to Nihonjoe 03:21, 20 January 2009 (UTC)

Inclusion of SportsCenter

The inclusion of SportsCenter is quite tenuous, as it is just as non-episodic as, say, morning shows, which are not included. Therefore, I have removed SportsCenter. ¿SFGiДnts! ¿Complain! ¿Analyze! ¿Review! 01:38, 8 July 2009 (UTC)

Length for inclusion

I think this list ought to begin around 500 episodes in order to remove some of the shorter series. When you have the top series having over 30,000 episodes, that gives the list too much range. Thoughts? ···日本穣? · Talk to Nihonjoe 03:54, 9 January 2009 (UTC)

I agree with your numbers. However, my initial response is that you are comparing apples and oranges. A show that airs 5 days a week (such as a daily soap opera) will "rack up" many more episodes in a year/season than a show that airs 1 day a week (such as a weekly sit-com). Also, this is compounded by the fact that a soap opera may run all year round, 365 days a year ... while a weekly sit-com, however, may run for only 13 or 26 weeks or so in a year/season. So, to that extent ... you are comparing apples and oranges, if you look at simply the number of total episodes. A sit-com running for many, many, many years will never "catch up to" a soap opera that runs every single day of the year. Thus, it is "easy" for a soap opera to rack up 30,000 episodes ... and "hard" for a weekly sit-com to rack up 150 episodes. These are just examples, but I think they make my point. The range between 30,000 and 150 is quite large -- agreed. Except that the numbers are really comparing very different things (daily episode shows versus weekly episode shows). The overall list is about longevity of a show. I don't know exactly what the "cut off" number should be. I am merely advocating that these episode numbers are not "equal" in their relative value. One might rank shows according to "how many seasons they have aired" ... which creates more of a level playing field than "how many episodes aired". However, as we know, the term "season" has become very nebulous as of late ... where, in the past, a "season" was more defined as "running from September through June" (or whatever). So, while the range between 30,000 and 150 is great ... I don't think it's a fair comparison. These are my initial thoughts. Thanks. (Joseph A. Spadaro (talk) 00:54, 19 January 2009 (UTC))
What do you mean, "comparing apples to oranges"? I made no comment at all about whether a show was weekly or daily. My only comment was that shows with fewer than 500 episodes don't really need to be on this list. ···日本穣? · Talk to Nihonjoe 02:55, 23 January 2009 (UTC)
Then you missed the entire point of my response. I am saying that in some instances, the number 150 is a relatively large number of episodes for a show (for example, a sit-com that only runs once a week and only runs 13 or 26 times per year). In some cases, the number 30,000 is a relatively small number of episodes for a show (for example, a soap opera that runs every day of the week and every day of the year). So, comparing the number of episodes is like comparing completely different things ... hence, the phrase "comparing apples and oranges". You seriously did not get what I was saying in my above (rather lengthy and detailed) response? (Joseph A. Spadaro (talk) 05:19, 23 January 2009 (UTC))
I understood your comments perfectly well, but they didn't make sense in the context of my initial comment. This is all moot, though, as I already stated I agreed that daily and weekly shows should be listed separately. (see below) ···日本穣? · Talk to Nihonjoe 03:55, 24 January 2009 (UTC)
Actually, my comments made perfect sense in the context of your initial posting. While I agree that the issue is now moot, I will nonetheless explain my position. Your initial post essentially advocated the removal of shows that had between 150 and 499 episodes. My reply was to disagree because such a cut-off point would disproportionately impact some long-running shows (such as weekly sitcoms). Sitcoms are clearly a main staple of prime time television. One of the most successful and longest running ever in the history of TV was M*A*S*H. And that sitcom had "only" 251 episodes or so. As I stated, that was one of the most successful and longest running sitcoms in all of TV history. That "mere" number of 251 weekly episodes (spread out over 11 seasons or so) cannot possibly compete with even the "lousiest" soap opera ever, that could easily "rack up" 365 episodes in a single year. Thus, in essence, if you made a cut-off point at 500 episodes, you are deleting all of the greatest sitcoms in TV history ... yet maintaining even the lousiest of the lousy soap operas (which have a lopsided episode count, due to their daily airing). Such a cut-off point would defeat the value of this article ... which is really to highlight the longevity of shows, as my reply to your initial post stated. Thus, my comments made perfect sense in the context of your initial posting. Thanks. (Joseph A. Spadaro (talk) 14:50, 24 January 2009 (UTC))
I've taken the article to AfD now. I was planning to do it anyway, but your comments really just added to my general feeling that this list isn't needed, and serves no useful purpose really! Aside from the fact that it hasn't been updated for several weeks, and is mostly unsourced. ~~ [ジャム][t - c] 09:51, 19 January 2009 (UTC)
For me, I think it actually is a good and useful list. It can be sourced and "fixed up" ... rather than deleted. Thanks. (Joseph A. Spadaro (talk) 16:45, 19 January 2009 (UTC))
Well, I'm going to let the AfD run its course - I think a bit more community feedback (rather than those directly involved) would be better. As I said on the AfD in reply to another comment, I acknowledge the work of the other authors, but I just believe it is going to be too much to handle. ~~ [ジャム][t - c] 17:05, 19 January 2009 (UTC)
Yes, I agree ... we will let the AfD run its course ... and then go from there. Thanks. (Joseph A. Spadaro (talk) 23:14, 19 January 2009 (UTC))
It seems to me that this situation would then require this list to be split (after cleanup and sourcing, before anyone bashes me for even suggesting it) into at least a List of daily television programs by episode count and List of weekly television programs by episode count. Not that there are very many of these, but for the shows that have aired both daily and weekly, they could either be included in both lists, or included in the list that fits their current situation - in both cases, however, they would need a note explaining the situation. In addition, I think those programs that air Monday-Friday would still be "daily" programs, but would once again merit an explanatory note. Any other special cases would probably have to be decided on a case-by-case basis. --User:Dinoguy1000 as 66.116.24.177 (talk) 01:56, 23 January 2009 (UTC)
Both could reasonably be included in the same article, just as separate sections. ···日本穣? · Talk to Nihonjoe 02:49, 23 January 2009 (UTC)
I agree with the "same article / different sections" idea. Makes more sense than two separate articles. Thanks. (Joseph A. Spadaro (talk) 05:25, 23 January 2009 (UTC))
The list would benefit greatly from the aforementioned improvement. Leaving out shorter daily programs would also make the overall content of the list more relevant. I suggest 750 as the cut-off for daily programs, as many of them run five days a week, thus (at least, but preferably not more than) five times the number for weekly programs would be reasonable. 82.131.12.105 (talk) 23:55, 24 January 2010 (UTC)

C.I.D. episode count.

Looks like an edit oops there. 15,762 episodes? C.I.D. (TV series) says 643 and still going. What'd be nifty is if there was a way to do auto incrementing of counts like those. Bizzybody (talk) 08:43, 16 September 2010 (UTC)

why is The Tonight Show with Jay Leno separated by run?

IT seems pretty arbitrary that only the original run of The Tonight Show with Jay Leno is counted, while Jeopardy, with a MUCH longer break in between runs, and with a new host...is counted across all runs of the show. Surely more people would consider the Leno Tonight Show from 2010-2014 to be the same show as the 1992-2009 version a lot more than people would consider the Alex Trebek Jeopardy to be the same as the Art Fleming version. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2604:6000:D500:3D00:F86D:2B39:D1B:E357 (talk) 05:57, 12 May 2015 (UTC)

The episode count

Why is the episode count dropping to 179. I was going to make a suggestion of having a page for shows with at least to 100-149 episodes.

But this list keeps erasing series that has reached at least 150 episodes and it keeps getting deleted. I think it will be great for a page to honor television series that has at least 100 episodes in this category.

I know it may be too long for this page but a separate one can list the details of each show that has made it to that number just like the 100 episode syndication rule. Tropetroop29 (talk) 05:11, 23 April 2019 (UTC)

@Fanoflionking: I'm cancelling this RfC, because it is malformed. You're not supposed to start an RfC with some sort of bias loaded into your proposition or query; it has to be neutrally-worded. It also should have a clear objective, like trying to decide on criteria for inclusion in this list article. Since it is unclear what your complaint is, it's difficult for me to give you an example. If your concern is that the article is presently is far too indiscriminate, meaning, it wants to include far too many TV shows, maybe a question more like "Should this article be limited to shows that have had ___ number of episodes? If so, what's a good cut-off?" might be closer to how an RFC should be structured.
As someone who hasn't edited this article much, if at all, to me it looks like it's just going to be an endless list of television shows, which will violate WP:NOTINDISCRIMINATE. I mean just from "List of television programs by episode count", that could include a hundred thousand television shows from all over the world, for the entire history of television. Just think of how many thousands of TV shows are produced each year that air a few episodes before being cancelled. It's really unclear what the goal of this article is. I will remove some less notable or unsourced events from the list and put them here. Feelfree to discuss. I have rough criteria in mind, but typing them would be too long. The edition are missing from the copied elements. why don't count except other country's television program issue ? Look at other language's of issue, Japanese, Korean, Chinese same edition. May be, You are thorny issue and problem, but it should be able to resolve. [citation needed] User:JFDA 00:06, March 24, 2012 (UTC)

Pointless, change it to soap opera list.

This list is nothing like it was made to be and is a dud. Now it's pretty pointless to even have. There should be pages for sitcoms and dramas by episodes. Its no use to keep having episode numbers rise up. This literally went from 100 or 150 to 3200! Its irrelevant to any page made. This is more of a soap opera list if anything. You might as well retitled it to just that. Tropetroop29 (talk) 23:54, 18 February 2023 (UTC)
