The Giant of CONCACAF
editIf this were ever the nickname for Mexico, we'd need a citation. I've ever seen this in either Spanish or in English. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.161.121.154 (talk) 08:40, 15 June 2010 (UTC)
National Eleven
editSurely this isn't a nickname? Just an actual name. --John (talk) 21:46, 18 January 2009 (UTC)
- What do you mean? The Other Saluton (talk) 06:16, 5 July 2009 (UTC)
- It's not a nickname in the sense that you can use it for any team. Expressions like "die französische Nationalelf", "the French national eleven" are commonly used. I've removed the entry for Germany.--ospalh (talk) 12:25, 23 April 2010 (UTC)
- Yes I agree, the same counts for "the Dutch Eleven" for the Netherlands, and "Nationalelf" for Germany. These terms are generic, and can be used for any country. They are hardly used anyway, and the (widely known) real nicknames are "Oranje" (Netherlands) and "Die Manschaft" (Germany).--nonfictie (talk) 02:34, 14 June 2012 (UTC)
Russian Сборная
editIs just a Russian word for «national team» (just check a dictionary) and obviously is not a nickname. Actually, Russian eleven doesn't have neither official nor unofficial nickname thus always being referred simply as «national team». —Preceding unsigned comment added by 194.50.169.20 (talk) 07:25, 5 June 2009 (UTC)
- Agreed. I deleted it. The Other Saluton (talk) 06:16, 5 July 2009 (UTC)
Turkish Nicknames
editI removed " Geri Donuslerin Krallari" from the Turkish version of the nick names. This is just a translation (and one that would never be used in Turkey) of "comeback kings" which originated in only one tournament (2008 Euros). Also nobody calls them "Çılgınlar" or "Crazies" in Turkey. They are just known as "Ay Yildizlilar" translated as "The ones with Crescent Star" which alludes to the flag of Turkey. Xommana (talk) 09:34, 4 June 2010 (UTC)
Germany
editThe German national team does not have (and never had) a nickname in the sense that the name is used by the team itself or the fans or media in Germany.
- "Mannschaft" is the literal translation for "team" and can be used for any sports team (or even non-sports team) in the world. In other countries, some call the German team "Mannschaft", but that's not a nickname. It's just an untranslated adoption of the German word; basically the same as calling Italian fans "tifosi", which is just the Italian word for "fans" but not a nickname either.
- "Nationalelf" is a generic term for a national football team; literaly translated the "national eleven". (NB: The term "die Elf", literaly for the number eleven, is itself a generic term for "football team".) The term "Nationalelf" can be (and is widely) used for any country's national team, e.g. "die spanische Nationalelf" for "the Spanish national eleven", meaning the Spanish national football team. Of course, when referring to the German team, it is often called "die Nationalelf" rather than "die deutsche Nationalelf", but that's just a grammatical shortening, just as one says "the Government" in the UK rather than "the UK government" if the context is clear.
Please stop adding those entries; they are plain nonsense! --Informatico (talk) 08:28, 14 June 2010 (UTC)

Oceania instead of Asia Pacific
editWe should follow the FIFA classification and split Asia Pacific into Asia and Oceania. — Preceding unsigned comment added by M nesian (talk • contribs) 11:25, 9 August 2011 (UTC)
Per the above comment...
editI'm going to go ahead and Be Bold and fix these tables, putting them by FIFA Confederation, putting a standard format, and alphabetizing the lists. Achowat (talk) 13:25, 25 January 2012 (UTC)
- Still, a lot of work should be done. Let's be coherent and choose either by Continent, or either by Confederation:
- "Europe", there, does not match to UEFA
- "Americas" could be split in CONCACAF and CONMEBOL
- "Middle East" is neither a Continent nor a Confederation
- "Asia" does not match AFC
- "Asia and Pacific Region" is a mixed pot of AFC and OFC
- And, at last, why do some lists have "Nickname" in the leftmost column, while others have "Team" as the leftmost?

Clarification about the word “quina”
edit“Quina” does not translate to “shield”. In Portuguese, a “quina” is a group of five (of anything). In this particular case it refers to the five shields, each with five bezants in the Portuguese flag. 188.37.81.120 (talk) 09:36, 22 June 2014 (UTC)
What about Micronesia?
editCan somebody add the Federated States of Micronesia national football team's nickname with a source to the article? Apparently it is "The Four Stars". Arrielmeca (talk) 14:29, 13 August 2015 (UTC)
