The names of the new municipalities as of January 1, 2007

I am writing this in the hope of avoiding extra work due to inconsistency of names for the new municipalities as of January 1, 2007.

During the past few months I have been working on articles about Danish municipalities. My hope has been to standardize them, improve them, and get them ready for the large municipality reform of 2007. In this regards I have:

1. Standardised all existing articles at Category:Municipalities of Denmark
2. Written article for those municipalities that currently exist which didn't have articles yet, per the list on the discussion page at the above category (now an empty list)
3. Written articles for all future municipalities of Denmark-- municipalities with new names, not the same as existing municipalities

I believe these tasks have been completed, although I am still verifying.

Along the way there arose many issues, among them the question of how to handle existing muncipalities that will be enlarged as of January 1, 2007, for example what should be the name of the enlarged municipalities? In other words, if the "old" municipality was called "XXX municipality" does it become "New XXX municipality" after the reform (merge) takes place, or other naming variations. Many municipality website use this "New XXX municipality" form, however Indenrigs- og Sundhedsministeriet (Ministry of the Interior and Health) that has the official word on this subject does not, as per their official Danish-language list.

I became convinced that we should use the official name, and no other, in the form of "XXX municipality". I have, therefore, included the following more or less standard text block on articles for existing municipalities that will be enlarged. This text can easily be edited after the reform to keep it current.

Before January 1, 2007 it would read as follows:

By January 1, 2007 "XXX" municipality will, as the result of Kommunalreformen ("The Municipality Reform" of 2007), be merged with existing "YYY"" and "ZZZ" municipalities to form an enlarged "XXX municipality". This will create a municipality with an area of 642 km² and a total population of 63,799 (2005). The mnicipality will belong to the new "AAA Region Nordjylland" ("North Jutland Region").

AfterJanuary 1, 2007 it would read as follows:

As of January 1, 2007 "XXX" municipality was, as the result of Kommunalreformen ("The Municipality Reform" of 2007), merged with existing "YYY"" and "ZZZ" municipalities to form an enlarged "XXX municipality". This created a municipality with an area of 642 km² and a total population of 63,799 (2005). The mnicipality belongs to the new "AAA Region Nordjylland" ("North Jutland Region").

This would result in a history of the changes to the municipality's borders, similar to how some municipalities were enlarge in 1971 (see for example Blaabjerg municipality's article).

Those municipalities that will be merged into others by 2007, and would therefore cease to exist, can simply be recategorised as Former municipalities of Denmark.

Yes, it's all to easy to make typos. As you no doubt already knows, the problem was that the Ministry of the Interior preferred the new municipalities to be named after the largest town (read: the new municipalities should, if possible, use an existing name.) So in order to distinguish between e.g. the "old" Thisted municipality and the "new" municipality, we sometimes use the prefix "Ny ..." / "New ..." when speaking about the future municipalities. But these names are quickly disappearing again. I'm not the only one who prefers to speak about "den nye Kerteminde Kommune" rather that "Ny Kerteminde Kommune" which just sounds horrible. Besides, the names with the prefix were only intended to be used until the local politicians had time to settle the issue.

Take my native Funen County as an example, out of our ten new municipalities, we could actually add "New" in front of six of them (Kerteminde, Nyborg, Svendborg, Assens, Middelfart, and Bogense.) That'd never work.

But I know that quite a few maps exist using some (or all) of the temporary names. The Danish wikipedia no doubt still has articles using them. I think it'd be better if we ignore the prefix rather than make separate article on both e.g. Nyborg municipality and Ny Nyborg municipality (since one of the articles will eventually be merged with the other.) In this case, I'd prefer simply to add a line to the "Nyborg municipality" article; something like "On 1 January 2007, Nyborg municipality will be merged with the municipalities of Ullerslev and Ørbæk." and perhaps add a table showing the size and population of the "old" municipalities.

The official position seems pretty clear, as the Ministry of the Interior doesn't use the prefix (see e.g. [1] This page has links to both a map and a list of the new municipalities so you might find that useful.

PS: If you were surprised that I wrote "Kerteminde Kommune" rather than "Kerteminde kommune", well, I just prefer the old spelling (so does the Ministry btw.). [2]

population figures

someone [3] has moved all the future population figures into the current ones at 28 Feb.

I have reverted some of the changes, but would prefer someone with references to check and possibly continue, especially as I found inconsitencies between the English and German article on Randers. Agathoclea 12:32, 2 March 2006 (UTC)

Municipality articles

What will happen to these articles once the reform is finally in effect and the municipalities cease to exist? Will they be deleted or saved as i.e.. "Former municipality of Rønde"? For the sake of serverspace and all I appreciate that keeping data strictly current makes sense on the other hand it seems sensible to save a much data as possible to keep the scope of Wikipedia ever expanding. For historical reasons I know there has been a drive in the German wiki to include former entities. I see no reason for deleting. Agathoclea 07:31, 6 April 2006 (UTC)

Insignia after 2007

Hello folks. Does anyone have information on the effects of the administrative reorganization on the use of official emblems such as the coats of arms currently used by municipalities and counties alike? Will enlarged municipalities that inherit the name of an existing municipality also retain the logo of the original titular municipality, or will new arms have to be adopted? // Big Adamsky • BA's talk page 14:21, 5 April 2006 (UTC)

strip of city info

IMO all city information should be stripped of from the articles. When the reform takes place the old municipality pages will be kind of an archive while the city pages still live. Furthermore the cities then will be referenced from the new municipalities too. If there is no seperate city page for some municipality seats they should be created. Split out old list

I suggest splitting out the section List of municipalities of Denmark#1970-2006 to List of municipalities of Denmark (1970–2006). The municipal reform became effective 1 January 2007. The new municipalities had elections 17 November 2009 with the elected councils starting 1 January 2010. It is no longer reasonable to keep the two lists together on one long page. Municipal Reform?

Wouldn't the term "Structural Reform" be more correct than "Municipal Reform"?

First of all because the "correct" term in Danish is "Strukturreformen" and it translates better. Second because the reform involved much more than the municipal branch.--Nwinther (talk) 13:41, 25 August 2011 (UTC)

"Kommunalreformen" is more common in Danish than "Strukturreformen". The Danish Wikipedia article is da:Kommunalreformen (2007) but mentions both names. PrimeHunter (talk) 14:55, 25 August 2011 (UTC)
