Naming edit

Should the article names include the middle name, initial or neither? - FrancisTyers · 13:10, 9 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

I'd just create articles as how the United Nations lists them. The United Nations seems to list them by what they're known as, most of the time, but when there is a difference between what the nation's Permanent Mission to the United Nations says and what the PDF list says, I would default to the nation's Permanent Mission website. You can find an index of Permanent Missions to the UN at http://www.un.int/index-en/webs.html

I've heard Spanish names, like Vicente Fox Quesada, possess one last name from the mother and one from the father, so Fox would not be the middle name even if it appears that way. I noticed this while creating Enrique Berruga. Daniel Bush 13:33, 9 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

The Romanian ambassador's name is wrong. It's Motoc, not Moţoc.

Permanent Representatives not Ambassadors edit

The formal title for heads of missions to the United Nations is Permanent Representative ('Perm. Rep.') not Ambassador. They hold Ambassadorial rank but that is not the formal title. DSuser 16:32, 12 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

In the jargon of United Nations they are Permanent Representatives or Permanent Observers to the United Nations, but for the countries that sent them they are Chiefs of their respective Permanent Mission to the Office of the United Nations, mostly holding the title Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary (or in some cases deputies holding the formal title of Consul General, Consul, Consul Gerant, but as for the Office of the UN they are listed as Charge d'Affairs a.i.) This should be mentioned. -- Imbris (talk) 23:33, 4 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Other Permanent Representatives edit

Will mention in heading that this is Permanent Representatives to UN in New York; there are/were also Permanent Representatives to UN in Geneva, Vienna (and Permanent Delegates to UNESCO). Well I guess they are not that Permanent; they have changed since 1946! Hugo999 (talk) 04:51, 8 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Date of presentation of credentials edit

Please use Template:sort in accordance with Wikipedia:Date to make the dates sortable. It is a common practice for a list of this magnitude to be sortable, needed because Permanent Representatives have seniority according to the date of presentation of credentials. For help read Help:Sorting#Dates.

An example:

{{sort|2009-01-01|1 January 2009}}

Imbris (talk) 23:33, 4 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

I have hoped that it would not be so hard for the IP-user(s) to correctly write {{sort|2009-07-17|17 July 2009}} -- Imbris (talk) 18:01, 26 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

Default sorting of the table edit

The default sorting of the table shouldn't be changed for any other way of sorting. Why? For (1) it would be more difficult to update the table with new info – because – United Nations produce the updated list sorted by the way countries are seated in the General Assembly.

Anyone can change the way of sorting – by any column – including the name of a country. Furthermore it is interesting to see where the country is seated (between which countries).

Well, however, changing the display of the Macedonia name to "Macedonia (the Republic of)" makes not much sense, because that's a form of the name that's never used anywhere. Also, I doubt our readers want to bother with the difference between an "alphabetical order" of countries, which they get only if they click the header, and a "default order" that is also alphabetical by countries, but with those particular bureaucratic quirks dictated by the official seating order. That will only be confusing. That latter order, to my mind, has little intrinsic interest, certainly not for a topic that is as unrelated to the practical protocol of sessions as this one. Let's have a normal alphabetical order in the normal sense our readers will naturally expect. Fut.Perf. 19:04, 29 July 2009 (UTC)Reply
You can verify that I have supported the Macedonia cause, for the matter of practical purpose. I have no bias towards the issue(s). I support that on this list we should use ony [[Republic of Macedonia|Macedonia]] format, as in other cases too.
We must respect the order that is currently in place not only because it is interesting, and in my opinion has some intrinsic value as you put it – but because of at least two (of the following) reasons:
(1) The UN issue a list of Permanent Representatives which is ordered in the fashion of seating arrangements/chart
(2) It is easier to update the list, if it is arranged by their list (secondary source)
(3) We have different ways of determining the "default" order, and the list is not currently completely alphabetical, nor arranged by a single order.
(4) Making an exception for Macedonia makes disarray in the order, subjecting it to different standards
(5) The UN use full names only for those states/countries that obviously demand such treatment.
(6) Korea(s) are not aligned/listed/sorted together.
(7) Please compromise for the benefit of the reader and the fellow editors who update this list.

Ireland edit

I believe Anne Anderson is the current UN representative from Ireland. I'm not sure when she was appointed though. Kaldari (talk) 18:15, 10 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

Holy See edit

First of all the name should be changed to Holy See and not the Vatican, the observer status is not given to the Vatican for being a sovereign state, but to the Holy See as an internationally recognized entity. Second, the current observer is Francis Chullikatt, but I don't know where to find the date of the presentation of credentials. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Cjrs 79 (talkcontribs) 01:22, 9 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

South Sudan edit

Is it missing? Or just that the newly independent state haven't yet appointed a permanent representative? 42.3.2.237 (talk) 09:08, 10 January 2012 (UTC)Reply

No South Sudan in the UN list as of 17.01.2012. --... there's more than what can be linked. 13:54, 23 January 2012 (UTC)Reply
According the source they havent appointed one as yet. Probs just a delegation at the moment.Lihaas (talk) 02:14, 31 March 2012 (UTC)Reply
Just checked the new list - as of 2012.09.12., South Sudan still has no Permanent Representative. Taking their time, aren't they? It's strange, that's all. --    = ? 20:52, 12 September 2012 (UTC)Reply

removed "outdated" and "citations missing" templates edit

I've just finished updating the list - everything is listed the same as in the newest official UN listing. This list is practically the sole source there really is to this article, except for the 3 diplomat-specific official UN files for Georgia, South Africa, and the EU, and the site of SMoM. The point is, I don't think there is a need for any more sources, and the article is currently up to date - hence I removed both templates. Any objections or thoughts otherwise?--    14:41, 21 September 2013 (UTC)Reply

Permanent Representative of the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the United Nations edit

It seems like DRC has two reps! I thought I was confusing Democratic Republic of the Congo with the Republic of the Congo .. but it is not. Can someone have a look, please! Georges Nzongola-Ntalaja 13 January 2022[1]
