Mistake for 1995 match

Qualifying rounds
editThis list seems to include hat-tricks scored in the qualifying rounds of the UEFA Champions League. Either it should be specified in the article that the list covers not only the competition proper but the qualifying rounds as well, or the hat-tricks in question should be removed from the list, because UEFA Champions League statistics usually only include the competition proper and exclude the qualifying rounds. --Theurgist (talk) 15:34, 24 September 2015 (UTC)

Subs
editFollowing Rashford's treble, feels like we need additional info on players who subbed in to net a hat trick. Such info is already listed on Premier League's hat trick article. Splićanin (talk) 09:12, 29 October 2020 (UTC)
When's the start of the Champions League?
editI'd like to raise statistical issue, since my recent edit was reverted by ItsKesha, in my opinion recklessly, without knowing the context. As we all know, Champions League format was introduced in 1992–93 season. However, as stated in the article, "originally, the UEFA Champions League was only the group stage, a specific phase in the European Cup". Hence, difference in the statistics depending on the source.
1992–93 season began with two knockout rounds. In the first leg of the first round PSV won 6–0 and Juul Ellerman scored a hat-trick. Marco van Basten played in the first round and scored 2 goals in a game Milan won 4–0. Later on in the group stage (back then called Champions League) van Basten scored a hat-trick against IFK Göteborg, as listed in our article.
And as such, we have inconsistency in our sources. As most, Eurosport counts the whole season as Champions League, and as a result Ellerman is the first competition hat-trick scorer. UEFA, however, starts counting from that season group stage, as was initially planned. In this source they give van Basten a debut hat-trick (4 goals scored), as ItsKesha pointed while reverting my edit, and below we get:
Who scored the first Champions League hat-trick?
Marco van Basten (AC Milan 4-0 IFK Göteborg, 25/11/1992)
So, summing up: we have to either decide that:
- (option 1) Champions League started in 1992–93 with a group stage on 25 November 1992 and first hat-trick scorer was Marco van Basten and he did it on his debut;
- (option 2) Champions League started in 1992–93 with first round on 16 September 1992 and first hat-trick scorer was Juul Ellerman. Van Basten on his debut scored 2 goals, so his hat-trick against Ljubljana wasn't scored on his debut (which was his 3rd game in the competition).
For me, it's option 2 all along, but before further editing I'd like to see if that's the consensus. Peace! Red Devil (talk) 07:49, 13 March 2024 (UTC)
- Waiting for feedback - if no received, I'll go with option 2. Red Devil (talk) 06:24, 18 September 2024 (UTC)
- I would have thought the UEFA source would take precedene as they're the ones who organise the competition. So I'd assume that source would get more weight and lead to it being van Basten. But that's just my two cents. NapHit (talk) 19:53, 18 September 2024 (UTC)
