To do list

Is this up for DYK, if so what date? This article created 10/8, so presumably up for DYK on 10/14 or so. Then that is deadline for fixing it up. To do:

  • Finish importing any entries from List of RHPs in L.A. into 2nd table. Have imported South Los Angeles and West Adams entries from there, so far.
University Park ones from there are already covered. There remain numerous entries just labelled "Los Angeles" which appear from their addresses to be in the West Adams or other subarea within South Los Angeles. doncram (talk) 23:01, 8 October 2008 (UTC) Seem to be done with that. doncram (talk) 19:21, 13 October 2008 (UTC)
  • Continue checking those imported into 2nd table to merge / eliminate dups already covered, and to otherwise edit. Have processed through McCarty and Rosas entries in table below. Seems that Cbl62 processed through the rest.
  • Address a number of parenthetical "Ed. note" items added to some descriptions, noting small data discrepancies
  • Check List of California Historical Landmarks for any CHLs in area, add those to 2nd table. I checked the wikipedia list (which is incomplete for Los Angeles County), and then also the state's own list, finding no more. doncram (talk) 17:11, 13 October 2008 (UTC)
  • Visit all the existing LAHCM articles, particularly NRHP ones, add LAHCM info to infoboxes (may require converting from NRHP infobox to local1 infobox, or using NRHP2 infobox, i forget which)

To do list items added 10/8. doncram (talk) 18:24, 8 October 2008 (UTC)

Additional "to do" thoughts for tasks to be done before listing on DYK:

  • Prepare at least a stub article and photo for each of the HCMs from 1-100 in South LA;
  • Add coordinates for all HCMs and seek to include more precise neighborhood info; and
  • Come up with a catchy DYK hook to draw attention to the article. Cbl62 (talk) 21:36, 8 October 2008 (UTC)
  • Check for outliers that really don't belong in South LA. For example, the city list included Carroll Street even though its north of downtown and clearly doesn't belong. It also includes the Gerry Building in the South LA, even though it's in downtown. Once we create a downtown list, Gerry Building should be moved to that list. Also consider whether Paul Williams House and Rocha House more appropriately belong in the Westside list.Cbl62 (talk) 21:49, 8 October 2008 (UTC)
Then I'd support excluding Carroll Street and Gerry Building, upfront, from this article about South Los Angeles. I forget, have we yet started a list of LA HCM info issues, for reporting to the officials? These data issues should be put on a list similar to wp:NRIS info issues. We should just note the errors centrally, not display them prominently in the list-article (at most put in a footnote explaining that the HCM office list erroneously includes those specific sites which are in fact outside the South LA area), and perhaps notify the HCM later. doncram (talk) 23:01, 8 October 2008 (UTC)
I noted about 9 in Arlington Heights, Harvard Heights, or Mid-City, which in my view should be moved out. I moved out Paul Williams House, which is in Mar Vista, yes that should be covered in a Westside list-article (does that exist already? I copied it into the sandbox4 list for now). I find no Rocha house now, perhaps you moved it out already. doncram (talk) 19:21, 13 October 2008 (UTC)
I agree with you on Williams House and we've already moved Gerry Building and Rocha House out of the list. Per my note on your talk page, the others that you mention (all south of Pico Bouleverd) are in a gray area, in which case I'm inclined to follow the designation assigned by the City -- at least for now. Maybe once we get lists going for the Mid-City area, we'll conclude places like Victoria Park really do belong there, but I'm reluctant to move them out now. While not yet in mainspace, the Westside list is in development at User:Cbl62/sandbox2.Cbl62 (talk) 03:07, 14 October 2008 (UTC)
Okay, that's reasonable, although I think perhaps it should be clarified in the article that the definition of "South Los Angeles" is according to the city, except for various exceptions (which could/should be listed) that seem to be clearly erroneous. For these "gray area" ones, they may appear to be obviously one way or the other to some readers, who could conceivably take offense in some way for a perceived mischaracterization. I would like to hang a hat on some authority, explicitly in the text or a footnote, to defuse any such possibility. doncram (talk) 05:30, 14 October 2008 (UTC)
An explanatory footnote tying it to the Planning Commission definition sounds reasonable. In looking at the definition of South LA, it seems we've made the right choice. If we went by a strict definition of South LA, using the boundaries in the wikipedia South LA article, we'd even end up excluding Baldwins Hills Village, since it's west of LaBrea. The three exceptions we've made to the Planning Commission classification are Rocha House, Williams House, and Gerry Building, and that could be noted in the footnote as well. Cbl62 (talk) 05:42, 14 October 2008 (UTC)
Intro text and footnote about exceptions are now pretty good. Re-reading this discussion, what about Carroll Street, shouldn't that also be an exception covered in the footnote? I am not sure what "Carroll Street" is, is it a historic district or something. doncram (talk) 03:19, 15 October 2008 (UTC)

which ones of these are in South Los Angeles?

The following NRHPs in List of RHPs in L.A. don't have neighborhoods identified. Which are in South L.A.?

CHISL to add?

La Mesa Battlefield California Historical Landmark (#167), in Vernon, California site of the last engagement of the Mexican-American War in California, fought 9 January 1847. Should this be covered in the 2nd table? Vernon is a separate city i think, but it is within the South Los Angeles area broadly defined. doncram (talk) 20:56, 11 October 2008 (UTC)

If we start going outside city limits, that opens up another can of worms, i.e., should Beverly Hills or Santa Monica be on the Westside list, should City of San Fernando or Burbank be on San Fernando Valley list, or Monterey Park be on the Eastside list? I think we need to stick to city limits unless it's been declared an HCM by the city. Otherwise, these lists will get out of control. Cbl62 (talk) 04:54, 12 October 2008 (UTC)
Okay by me. doncram (talk) 19:21, 13 October 2008 (UTC)
