Split this page

I think that the current list of characters is really long and it is a mess, especially with the lots of redirects and the repeated section names (Immediate family, Season 1 introduced acquaintances, etc.) As the series is not completed yet, new information will be added to the current characters and more characters will appear. This will eventually get this list even larger and unreadable, and it is a violation of the article size policy. My proposal is to create 5 pages under the name of "Acquaintances of (the housewife's name)", namely Susan, Lynette, Bree, Gabrielle and Edie. I suggest this as the Wikipage on Notability states that minor characters should be sorted in minor characters' lists. This 5 pages as well as the current list of characters would get a section per character (similar to Characters of Final Fantasy VIII), to allow more information to be added, especially from those redirected characters who had individual articles. I notice that Katherine and Edie do not get their own pages, but merely sections. May I suggest that Edie get her own page (Acquaintances of Edie Britt) and Katherine has her own section in the current page. Also, Mary Alice gets her own section, as she is, indeed, a protagonist, along with the core five, and Katherine.

Merge from Tom Scavo

Why all the unnecessary merging? These characters, such as Tom, are pretty notable and deserve their own pages. If you have a problem with the articles then you should clean them up and making them more acceptable instead of just merging them. The lists of characters provide so little information, such as plot and curiosites about the characters on and off-screen. Individual articles are so much better. Andrew Van de Kamp, for example, has such a detailed and adequate page for him, can't they all be like that? I think they can, if we work together to make them all better. Suggested revamp of individual character pages

Because this show relies so heavily on flashbacks that are woven into the storylines, especially this past season, I think we should change the articles of the individual character choices. Instead of summarizing the events of the characters' lives by season (which in my opinion is dancing on the line of WP:PLOT), we should summarize their lives chronologically. There are flashbacks that aired in season five that take place in previous seasons and should be mentioned in those season's sections of the articles, if that makes sense. But to do that, we couldn't necessarily break the article up with "season one", "season two", etc. Maybe we could rename those sections "2004-2005", "2005-2006", etc (and I supposed "2008-2013" for anything that happened in the five year leap), or really anything that would allow us to accurately write the information in chronological order. I don't agree. All the material featured in the flashbacks can be featured in the "Early life" section, or perhaps in a "time gap" section (for the five year jump). Keep in mind that time is rarely mentioned onscreen, particularly starting with season five, so no one can really say the women are currently in 2014 or so, Marc Cherry has stated he likes to think Wisteria Lane is inside a time bubble. And some flashbacks that aren't part of the time gap or early lives of the characters before season one aren't even all that notable to be mentioned here on this online encyclopaedia, so to divide the pages into seasons is much more preferable. -- Renaboss (talk) 19:42, 8 November 2009 (UTC)

Bring back old character pages

I know this has been stepped on over and over again, and I apologize in advance, but it actually annoys that new characters, such as Angie Bolen and Ana Solis, that have yet to make all that many appearances and prove they're all that noteworthy, get to have character pages just because they are currently on the series, when past regular and recurring characters have been so notable they are still mentioned to this day and some of 'em are actually currently on the series, and yet they have to be a part of lists of characters with very few info on them. I am (again, sorry for the repetitiveness) suggesting we bring back the pages for the following characters: Betty Applewhite, Karl Mayer, Rex Van de Kamp, Felicia Tilman, John Rowland, Paul Young, Danielle Van de Kamp, Matthew Applewhite, Zach Young, Dave Williams and Ian Hainsworth, and maybe create a page for Juanita Solis, who has proven to be very noteworthy. I think regular characters such as the Scavo kids, Caleb, George, Dylan, MJ, Austin, or Nick and Danny are still not notable enough to deserve their own pages, and as such shouldn't get them or have them brought back. As for the others I previously mentioned, they sure do, and if we can all work together we can bring them back and polish them to get them to be adequate and encyclopaedia-worthy. -- Renaboss (talk) 19:49, 8 November 2009 (UTC)

Karl Mayer should have his own page. His character has enough backstory (information from his life pre-series) and he's been present in all six seasons so far, and very important in seasons two and six. I'll agree with you there. However, Betty and Matthew's pasts are mysterious. Nothing except their plot line in season two is known about them, and we cannot create individual articles that will just summarize plot. There has to be more information. Their sections in the character list article is sufficient. I would say that Rex and John could get their own pages, but they weren't on the show long enough to merit a well-written article. Ian and Felicia should not have their own articles at all. Recurring characters, unless recurring for the majority of the show's run, should not have their own articles. Paul, Zach, and Danielle are a different story. I would support your decision to create articles for them if we could scrounge up background information on the characters. Again, we can't just summarize plot. I am proposing that the article Angie Bolen be merged with this article. The article was nominated for deletion in September, but it was kept because people decided to wait how important Angie became to the series. As she is no longer a main character and her storyline, which only lasted one season, was largely separate from the series' central characters, I do not think she requires an individual article. I support the merge. Apart from storylines, seasons, etc., we must take notability outside the series into consideration. These counter arguments do not hold up. We cannot keep Angie's article based on the fact that characters from Grey's Anatomy or Lost have articles. It doesn't matter what other articles exist or don't exist -- we are discussing the Angie Bolen article. She does not have the notability to merit a separate article. The character herself was only in one season of the series. Her storyline did cross over with other housewives' stories but she spent most of the season largely isolated. Additionally, the article is not well-written. It consists chiefly of a lengthy and overly-detailed plot, which should be avoided on Wikipedia. Also, there is only one external source. I would suggest cleaning up the article, but that would not change the fact that the character does not have enough notability to have her own article. It dosn't matter if she spent time by herself. She was important. So she was in one season? She has had more proinence then mcclusky during her run. Why merge these articles, its not like there is no room... Angie was important and there was alot of talk about Drea de Matteo joining the show, plus she was a housewife during her time on the show, so why merge it? And I only brought up grey's and lost because they are much better written, particularly losts. Angie's may not be the best written, but its ALOT better then some on here, like Gabby's. Plus, the list of DH characters is too long, and should only include minor/recurring characters. Regardless of the fact that there is room for this article and how it compares to other articles, it is still not a good-quality article. It's poorly written and is just a summary of her storyline. Perhaps it's possible to redeem the article, but that would mean shortening the summary and expanding information about casting, character development, character personality, and critical reception. This charatcer was important just ONE season, so it is not relevant. Some important characters don't have their own article, charactes like Karl Mayer. who is more important than Angie. The thing is that Karen McCluskey is/has been an importan character for the series; she has been more than just one season, no matter if she was a guess star or a regular, and her character has been important for some plots. But with Angie is different, because she was only one season, and, like Betty Applewhite, se was just "important" during their respective season. Paul Young's article was merged cause her character was important for just two seasons, no more, and recently his article was brought back due to the fact that the character is coming back. Note: Paul Young was way more important than Angie Bolen (more plots and two seasons). In fact, Karl Mayer was more important than Angie, and still, he has no article, the same would apply for Rex and Danielle Van de Kamp, Zach Young, John Rowland, etc. Whose storylines make them more important than just-one-season-characters Betty, Dave and Angie. Absolutely rediculous! Who cares how long they have been in the series? They all are important characters, unlike mcclusky who is basically useless. Why in the world do you guys merge EVERYTHING to an article that is alrady too long? Why not have an article for all main characters, and save the list of DH page for the recurring characters???? Merge of Bob and Lee

I come with this proposal to merge both Bob Hunter (Desperate Housewives) and Lee McDermott since they have not managed to prove Wikipedia:Notability outside the series, by having vast coverage by reliable secondary sources, as well as impact in popular culture. They appeared since season four and after you or someone merge this article to page List of Desperate Housewives characters, there will be only major events in their history and I can not agree with that. I also agree with Akcvtt. I would merge them into one article. They are involved in enough storylines to merit an article, but they are usually together. Recommend removing Melanie Foster's bio

Melanie Foster is a tertiary character, mentioned in conversation and shown only in flashbacks. Her story is an integral part of the Applewhite brothers' story and is therefore already described in detail in their section. Merger of all Acquaintances pages

I come with this proposal to merge all Acquaintances pages into this list. The reason is because the characters are separated in a completely in-universe way, in several lists containing lots of minor characters (and some relevant ones), all of whom can be merged into one single, trimmed list. Right now, the four Acquaintances combined (Gabrielle's is already merged, and Susan's AfD result was "keep or merge"), plus the characters in the existing list would create a really large article. For this reason, I propose to: a) To trim the info on the remaining characters and b) Reduce the number of characters.

For the trimming thing, we have several really large sections such as Felicia's, Dave's or Ben's. They are really overdetailed, even containing entire pieces of conversations, which is against Wikipedia:FICTION. However, I suggest that the trimming takes place AFTER the mergers and point b)

For the number of characters thing, I suggest to remove all characters that appear only in a brief arc within one season, and leave only those recurring characters that appear in at least two or more seasons, or that had appeared in a significant plot or number of episodes within the same season (like Ian or Jane). My proposal is the following:

They are not "good" since they are not listed as "Good Articles" or something. The plot is repeated again and again in each of the 4 pages (three acquaintances and the main list). New structure of the article

I rearranged the presentation of the article to present the characters in a more objective way, rather than sorting them by relationship to a housewife, which is in-universe. Originally, we had "Acquaintances of [each housewife]" articles, but they were merged precisely for the same reason: the characters were presented in a in-universe way. Some of the characters are acquaintance or even family members of more than one housewife; for instance, Noah and Deirdre Taylor were listed as "acquaintance" of Susan but never met her, and developed more into Mary Alice's storyline. Principal Hobson, who is also presented as acquaintance of Susan, develops more into Gabrielle's storyline in seasons 6 and 8. Justin was first introduced as John Rowland's friend and into Gabrielle's storyline until he becomes Andrew's boyfriend. And so on.

I sorted the characters according to the star billing in the series. All characters that received at least once a "Starring" credit were featured as "Main characters", no matter if they have their own articles or appear in few or lots of episodes (for example, Danielle or the Scavo twins are much more important for me than Ana Solis, yet they never received "Starring" status). Same happens with those who were "Also starring", which are presented as "Secondary characters".
