List order edit

With the equivilant list for the UK: List of UK by-elections, we have now got it in reverse chronological order. Same here? Morwen - Talk 14:32, 15 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

Recent changes edit

I have reverted the recent changes by padraig3uk as they are not an improvement. The template looks really bad/amateurish. It needs alot of work before it can be acceptable, until then do not re-add it. Snappy56 18:26, 12 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

That is your POV, the edit I did make's the table easier to navigate,--padraig3uk 02:13, 13 May 2007 (UTC)Reply
And it is your POV that you have made it easier to navigate. In fact, you've made harder to use and really awful looking. There is no need to have a link to all the by-elections in each heading, which are already on the same page! Talk over needless redundancies! Look at List of United Kingdom by-elections for what other countries have, its quite similar. Snappy56 16:45, 13 May 2007 (UTC)Reply
I have to say I agree with Snappy - the larger tables do make the page less readable. Number 57 17:17, 13 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Republican Prisoners By-Elections edit

Hi, weren't there some Republican prisoners, who were elected to the Irish parliament during the hunger strikes in 1981? I couldn't find them on the list ??

I think they were elected in the general elections. I'm not sure if they were actual hunger strikers or sympathisers. Timrollpickering 17:23, 2 April 2006 (UTC)Reply
They were elected in the Irish general election, 1981 and are listed here Members of the 22nd Dáil.--padraig3uk 14:48, 10 May 2007 (UTC)Reply
Kieran Doherty died six months before the next general election - was the lack of a by-election deliberate or did the Dail get dissolved before one could happen? Timrollpickering 00:18, 9 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

How many relatives?! edit

There are a lot of TDs succeeding someone with the same surname - anyone want to list how the new and old TDs are related? Timrollpickering 17:23, 2 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

TOC to Tables edit

I have added a TOC to the tables which saves having to scroll through the tables, clicking on the links will bring that table to the top.--padraig3uk 12:38, 10 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Jim Larkin edit

Jim Larkin was elected as a candidate of the Irish Worker League (and not as an Independent) in the September 1927. I've tried to change this but this seems to mess up the page.--Damac 11:11, 11 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

I didn't notice that, in the 1937 General Election he was elected as a Independent for Dublin North East, the first time in Sept 1927 for Dublin County was for the IWL, when he was disqualified as a Bankrupt.--padraig3uk 13:33, 11 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Italics edit

Can we have an explanation for the rows in italics? It seems to be for by elections which were won by a different party to the outgoing TD. Might be helpful to inform readers of the article that this is what it means. Snappy56 (talk) 18:06, 19 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

Spelling edit

In Irish legislation such as http://www.irishstatutebook.ie/1930/en/act/pub/0001/print.html the spelling "bye-election" seems to be normative. -- Evertype· 11:48, 8 June 2009 (UTC)Reply

That may be so, but do we have to introduce another spelling variation into wikipedia? It would be better to leave the article (and spelling in it) at by-election, and have a footnote explaining the statuary spelling. Also, the bye spelling doesn't appear to be universal in the Irish media, RTE use bye but the Irish Times, Irish Independent and Irish Examiner use by. Snappy (talk) 13:31, 8 June 2009 (UTC)Reply
I've moved it back to by-election. This is the most common usage in Ireland, and as per wikipedia standards the article should sit at the most common usage not the technical name. Snappy (talk) 09:39, 12 June 2009 (UTC)Reply
I protest, and I would like to have heard other opinions before you moved it back. You have not demonstrated that it is "the most common usage in Ireland". You have merely asserted it. I cited normative legislation. -- Evertype· 10:16, 12 June 2009 (UTC)Reply
I don't dispute the fact the legislation uses bye spelling. I read all the major Irish media on a daily basis and I can tell you that as I stated above the majority usage is by, apart from RTÉ who use bye. Wikipedia recommends the 'common usage' and not how it ought to be, which means the spelling should be by-election. Snappy (talk) 11:10, 12 June 2009 (UTC)Reply

Pre-1922 elections edit

Why does this page only list by-elections in post-1922 constituencies? There have been many significant by-elections in Irish constituencies in the period before 1922 and it would be helpful to see them all together. At the moment, they tend to get swamped in the list of UK by-elections, many of which have an entirely different political background. Does anyone think this is a good idea? --Rbreen (talk) 20:01, 2 June 2013 (UTC)Reply

Because its a list of by-elections to Dail Eireann. Pre 1922 by-elections were to a different parliament, different voting system and mostly different parties. You could create a separate article for pre 1922 UK by-elections in Ireland. Snappy (talk) 11:56, 3 June 2013 (UTC)Reply
