Sorry that I switched off not realising that I need to post this proposal. What I want to point out is if we account for motorcycling, we will end up with an oversized list, we also may as well account for powerboat racing and aviation sport, hence my proposal.Plus, as like car racing, motorcycle sport is also vague, as I can see why a separate list for motorcycling champions existing, so why not follow that up. I don't agree. We can include powerboat racing and aviation sport, the length of the list is not really that much of an issue, the index at top makes it easy to cut straight to specific sections. As it list its meant to be all encompassing, I don't believe diluting is in the best interest. --Falcadore (talk) 04:52, 18 October 2008 (UTC)

Chapter order

The order of the various chapters appears all over the place to me, Rallying and Rally cross in the middle of the the circuit racing categories, there does not appear to be a lot of logic applied. I propose:

Where does this leave drifting, considering that there are two series between the Pacific Ocean that is highly commerciable compared to some of these at the list. As for rallying, does this mean that the WRC is less important to hillclimbing and rallycross, and the Andros Trophy being the least important of the lot. Another consideration is motorboat racing, as I'm not much of an expert, my knowledge of it was watching UIM offshore on cable TV a few years back. I know that hydroplane racing is very much of a big thing in the US, but where does that stand with the others (offshore and F1). Donnie Park (talk) 16:10, 8 November 2008 (UTC)

It was more about logical grouping than ranking, putting like with like rather than the slightly scattered approach current. For Drifting, either before or after Hillclimb. The numbers are meant to be a rough approximation of a Wikipedia Table of contents. WRC specifically would go into 1. World Championships with F1, WTCC, MotoGP, SBK I would have thought, as well as leading off rallying. I would have thought all relevant forms of water surface racing could be included under 10. If it was to be ranked the whole thing would become permanently bogged down in subjective comparisons and arguements. --Falcadore (talk) 17:35, 8 November 2008 (UTC)

I think that thanks to the popularity of a air racing series with money coming from an particular energy drink company that claim to "gives you wings", we should follow the old "Land-Air-Sea" order. That is because of strong media coverage, more and more people are aware of that series better than any powerboat series out there.

I definitely think that one-make series should be split according to their cars - and we are also being selective in describing one-make series - approximately half of the open-wheel series are one-make - including GP2, Indycars and A1 Grand Prix. The Australian Carrera Cup has a lot more in common, and indeed a lot of cross-over with the Australian GT Championship than the Mini Challenge. A Radical one-make series is very definately a sports car series, a completely different series than an arrive-and-drive Renault Clio series. It's very easy to be derogatory towards one-make because of the lack of team involvement in some, but can you really look at the Porsche Supercup and tar that series with same brush?

I also think that the amount of money Red Bull pour into air racing (which isn't actually racing) should have zero influence on an editorial decision. Perhaps of greater import should be that while Air Racing has had a very sporadic history (aiding its popularity because of its novelty), Sea Racing has had a fairly constant presense. --Falcadore (talk) 20:14, 15 November 2008 (UTC)

You could say most motorsport series need a bit of hype to be popular, even most of those listed are. What I am trying to account is licensing requirement, market influence, public popularity and amount of available TV coverages (higher up if these are live), not just history and cost of the series, thats how RBARWS became popular, so was A1GP - this means where does a current series that had its "day in the sun" a decade ago, for example the FIA GT Championship.

Also, as I understand its importance as it is the first step in the racing ladder, why would karting be high up in the ranking since TV coverages are far and few to most of these series, is the TV coverage and fan-following strong in Australia. I though as this list is about 2008, it would be listed as status in 2008 to over the entire history.

I think Speedway should be above Supermoto for its high popularity, so should Supercross, somewhere within motorcross, for its popularity and the amount of notable riders, especially in the AMA series. Donnie Park (talk) 08:20, 19 November 2008 (UTC)

If we were to rank say Red Bull Air Race ahead of FIA GT, ranked purely on popularity it would a) be subject to continual subjective arguement of editors promoting their favourite, referencing crowd figures, tv ratings etc etc, and b) be unable to be find anything. The original idea was to put similar series together and similar categories closer together. Air Racing is at the bottom essentially as it the most different from all the others I guess, it is not intended to be a value judgement but simply an aid to searching.

As Supermoto is halfway between bitumen racing and dirt racing I personally would prefer a transitional placement, but I don't care that much. It seems we're down to the proverbial small potatoes, so Imight begin. --Falcadore (talk) 20:25, 19 November 2008 (UTC)

With the recent reformat, I will have to object to the motorcycle bit being merged into the car section as that section is still in one piece and merging them together will make it look less organised. I think all one-event championship should be removed as we will be cluttered with virtually every so called "world championships" that took place over one day/weekend (example: Red Bull Drifting World Championship, any IFMAR championships) - that as there is no guideline to this list.

Other than that, I am thinking of taking that Porsche 944 series off the list, considering that car was long discontinued, therefore no longer manufactured supported - making it look out of place in huge contrast to the other work supported series otherwise we will be cluttered with every one one-make and other club series.
