Made several changes:

  • Changed the description of the development of the Irvin parachute to follow material from an article published in the Smithsonian Institution's Air & Space magazine. The previous description was taken from a "this day in history blog" which provided no source for its material.
  • Removed "In those days parachutes were stored in canisters rather than in packs on the pilots' backs." It does not relate well to the preceding or following sentences. Charles Broadwick jumped from balloons with a backpack parachute in 1906 (three years before Irvin's first jump) and Irvin's jump from an aircraft was not as a pilot.
  • Removed "In the 1920s and early 1930s virtually every parachute in use was made by the company." as that was not supported by the citation provided (wnyheritagepress.org web page).

It's concerning that the statement about being the world's first parachute designer and manufacturer depends on a reference to a corporate web site. An independent source would be better.
