Move? edit

Should be renamed to "Laws of rugby union". I have put a few redirects into place.--MacRusgail (talk) 19:35, 12 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

I have no objection to changing the title to "Laws of rugby union". It will match up with the opening sentence better. AIRcorn (talk) 05:46, 14 September 2011 (UTC)Reply
Well, I suppose it's the formal title, although virtually no one refers to them as "laws"! (That's a good trick question - how many rules are there in rugby union? The answer's technically none.) The other code's articls is "Laws of rugby league". I have created some redirects so I think it will have to be moved on top of laws of rugby union.-MacRusgail (talk) 15:16, 16 September 2011 (UTC)Reply
Moved. I knew enough not to name it rules at least. AIRcorn (talk) 13:01, 24 September 2011 (UTC)Reply
Sorry, didn't mean to offend! No, I just meant that pretty much no one refers to them as "laws" in my experience, except in the most formal contexts, but that it's the correct title for this. --MacRusgail (talk) 15:03, 29 September 2011 (UTC)Reply
No offence taken at all. I meant it tongue in cheek. I run around with a whistle every now and again and one of the first things I learnt (after being told "there is no such thing as a good ref") was not to refer to them as rules. Should have put a smiley face on it, but I really can't stand them. AIRcorn (talk) 20:21, 29 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

Offside edit

I was trying to find out what is considered offside in rugby, I didn't find it in this article — Preceding unsigned comment added by 93.26.195.41 (talk) 09:44, 24 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

There is the Offside (rugby) article. I will try and work more information into the article. Should it be made into its own section or incorporated into sections (i.e offside at scrum, offside at lineout, offside during general play)? AIRcorn (talk) 12:58, 24 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

Obsolete rules/laws edit

Would it be worth having a section on the defunct laws of ru? Isn't the "mark" thing pretty much extinct for example.--MacRusgail (talk) 14:43, 3 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

I don't think the mark is extinct, the IRB have entire section on it http://www.irblaws.com/EN/laws/4/18/section/law/ but yeah I think it's a good idea Gnevin (talk) 11:27, 6 October 2011 (UTC)Reply
The mark still exists, although it doesn't seem to be used as much anymore. There are a few defunct laws mentioned under the history section (early charging the conversion, goal from a mark, changes to points awarded for tries/goals). Are there more that need mentioning? AIRcorn (talk) 12:22, 6 October 2011 (UTC)Reply
Would like to see a section of the removing of actual rucking (use of the boot on the player). In fact I'd like to see a Evolution of Rugby Union lifting in line out , 4 player front rows, wingers throwing in at the line out , reversal of the numbering system . Gnevin (talk) 13:24, 6 October 2011 (UTC)Reply
Agree that changes in rucking should be included here. I am not too familiar with the older changes, but have ordered a few books from the library and will pick them up this weekend. Maybe the history section should be split off from this one and expanded? AIRcorn (talk) 08:53, 7 October 2011 (UTC)Reply
That is a good suggestion, and other stuff which could be included are player numbers (originally twenty), standardisation of various things, metrification (when did that happen?)... not to mention the fact that jerseys seem to have evolved a lot in recent years - they're just about t-shirts these days! --MacRusgail (talk) 16:49, 11 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

The rolling maul seems to have largely died a death. It does still exist, kind of, but with the modification of rules, it seems to be less common than it used to be. No doubt this is because it was a major part of play, but not very marketable, and could lead to spinal injuries.--MacRusgail (talk) 16:47, 11 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

These things come and go in phases, during the elvs we where awash with marks before the elvs Rolling mauls where seen in every game. Gnevin (talk) 10:03, 12 October 2011 (UTC)Reply
