Homosexuality in the Laws

The comment about homosexuality in the article: I think it is inaccurate to say that Plato "supports" it in the Symposium and the Phaedrus because he has characters who are engaged in ephebophilia. Anacreon 19:06, 3 February 2007 (UTC)

Rpublic vs. The Laws

« It is similar in that both dialogues concern the making of a city in speech, but different in that the one city is ideal, and the other a real, practical city. The city of the Laws is described as "second best" as opposed to the city of the Republic. »

This is a mistake : the city of the Republic is a copy of an « ideal », not an ideal (for Plato, it's always impossible to create a city identical with the life of gods) ; in The Laws, the city is a copy too, and the first best city isn't the city of Republic, but the city of gods and their childrens. Athenian Stranger

I noticed that the article claims the following: "The text is noteworthy as Plato's only undisputed dialogue not to feature Socrates." But this is not quite right. What about the Statesman and the Sophist? Neither dialogue features Socrates as the primary leader of discussion. And current scholarship does not deem these dialogues as having authenticity issues. The wiki pages of the dialogues I am referring to also don't mention any authenticity problems, so in order to keep wiki pages consistent on Plato, we either need to modify the Statesman and Sophist pages or we need to slightly modify this page. Those dialogues may have been disputed at one point, due to the efforts of Schleiermacher in the 1830's. Over 3/4 of the dialogues were cast into doubt during this time, including the Apology, but since then the majority of the dialogues he cast aspersions over have recovered their status as authentic. So I guess what I mean to say, is that perhaps we can take out the sentence I quoted, because it involves the page in discussion that I don't think it needs to be in. I think by "feature," the article means that he does not appear at all, rather than that he does not play a starring role. RJC ^Talk_Contribs 17:37, 13 November 2012 (UTC)

Plato and Ancient Greece

I want to add a piece concerning Plato's usage of the word nome; nomoi and nomes. The way he uses the words in his 'nomoi' (translated as the laws) is worth a mention.
