Lawrence Nigel Jones (born 1 August 1968) is a businessman and digital entrepreneur. He is the founder and CEO of the Manchester-based colocation, dedicated and cloud hosting provider, UKFast.[1]

In 2012, Lawrence Jones was named Ernst & Young Technology Entrepreneur of the Year and, in 2013, he received ‘Director of the Year for a Small to Medium Company’ at the Institute of Directors’ awards ceremony.[2][3]

Early life

Jones was born in Denbigh, North Wales. He attended Ruthin School before going on to study music at Durham Chorister School.[4][5]

Career

Music Design Company

At sixteen, Jones moved to Manchester and initially made money working for A1 music, buying and selling odd items, and playing the piano in hotel lobbies across the city.[6]

Noticing a gap in the market, at seventeen he began buying and renting out grand pianos, and created his first business - the Music Design Company (MDC) - which provided venues in the region with musicians, instruments, staff, and equipment. According to Jones, an effective monthly recurring revenue model then enabled him to open a digital recording studio in Manchester, before he sold The Music Design Company to Granada in 1998.[7][8]

After working with Grosvenor Productions - a Granada Entertainments company - he spent a year in the USA. Here, Jones states, he decided that the internet, and UKFast, was to be the focus of his next venture.[9]

Although this was a marked change of direction for the entrepreneur, Jones used the same “recurring revenue model” as The Music Design Company to generate income in his new business. [10]

UKFast

Jones formed UKFast in 1999 with his partner (now wife) Gail, after attempts at creating an online gallery were reportedly hampered by poor customer service from web hosting providers of the time.[11]

Today, the hosting and colocation business operates its own data centre complex in Trafford Park, Manchester, and has grown from a two-person team to an organisation of over 200 employees.[12][13] In 2013, the firm reached a milestone turnover of £20million.[14]

Company Awards

UKFast has been awarded the National Business Award for ‘Employer of the Year’, the firm is also a six-time ISPA winner, and has repeatedly been listed as one of the fastest-growing technology companies in the UK in the Deloitte Fast 50 and the Sunday Times Tech Track.[15][16][17][18][19][20][21][22][23][24]

In 2013, UKFast was awarded the "Objective HR Employee Engagement Strategy of the Year" at the Institute of Customer Service's Customer Satisfaction Awards; the firm has also featured consistently on the Sunday Times list of Best Companies to Work For, and The Great Workplace Institute's Great Place to Work list.[25].[26][27][28][29][30][31]

For its technical efforts, UKFast was awarded the Data Centre Solutions Awards’ "Private Cloud Product of the Year" in 2012, as well as the DatacenterDynamics Award for "Innovation in Outsourcing" in 2013.[32][33]

Personal life

Lawrence and Gail Jones have three daughters: Tegan, Poppy and Coco.[34] They live in Cheshire, England.[35]

Sexual assault allegations "poorly sourced"? edit

A few people have tried to add details of the accusations of sexual assault, sexual harassment and bullying reported in the Financial Times, The Times and Sunday Times in the last few days, alongside Lawrence Jones' repsonse to them. Despite the citations to reputable publications, they've been removed as "poorly sourced" and "defamation". The last edit I made simply quoted and cited both the initial reports and the response.
