Merge Kite (Styrofoam-only) into here edit

I see little need for a separate article on Kite (Styrofoam-only). It should be trimmed to only the most relevant info, and merged here. --ZimZalaBim talk 19:12, 26 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hi ZimZallaBim, nice to have your interest in the growing article. Might you hang on while the article develops. The Kite types article will grow to be very large; it will not have room to show all the pertinent and relevant facts for each key type of kite; it is against Wikipedia to have too-long of articles. In Kite Types, it will become enough to put summaries of each types. There are still many types of kites that are needed to be included. To develop each type adequately will take focussed articles on many of the most important types. Namely, the yet-to-be-matured article on Styrofoam-only kites, would make the article on Kite types be too large and misfocussed. The proper place to have the pertinent things about Styrofoam-only kites is in a dedicated article. You are invited to help bring in citations. The job is not to trim down and merge, but to be encyclopedically comprehensive for the focus. Joefaust (talk) 20:19, 26 February 2008 (UTC) Joefaust (talk) 22:31, 27 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

The ubiquity of Styrofoam free-for-the-taking has interested artists, school teachers, and kite makers. Kite builders have seen the flow of the free material as a boon to their hobby. Also, serious kite builders have seen the special qualities of Styrofoam. The massive interest deserves an article that brings forward the facts about this special kite. Joefaust (talk) 20:30, 26 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

That's great - have any verifiable sources to confirm? --ZimZalaBim talk 20:32, 26 February 2008 (UTC)Reply
Thanks. Yes. And even more to come. Joefaust (talk) 22:31, 27 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Need citations for these categories edit

We need citations to verify that these different kind of categorization & "typing" exists. I've already removed a bunch that simply seemed like someone's original research, filled with just a bunch of questions (not facts). --ZimZalaBim talk 19:34, 26 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hi ZimZalaBim, Each question that you removed has citable source. Please hang-on. This is an inanimate object article; WP on non-living person articles allows some hang-on time. The typing categories are verifiable categories; this article is maturing to give visitors a view of how culture has typed kites for various reasons. You are invited to bring forward the potential hundreds of citations for these verifiable typings that are in the kite world. Your help will be appreciated. The questions are verifiable and are answered in the culture. I have not looked yet at what you deleted; but the verifiable dimension might invite you and me to bring forward citations. Soon. Joefaust (talk) 20:24, 26 February 2008 (UTC)Reply
Saying that something varies based on its "supplier path", and then just listing questions like "Is the kite available by mailorder? Can the kite be ordered online? Must the kite be picked up at the supplier's place of business or home?" is not encyclopedic. Anything can be categorized in such a way. Show us where such categorization is actually used to some unique or distincive purpose in relation to kites, and perhaps it is worth including. (that goes for most of these classifications, I fear). --ZimZalaBim talk 20:35, 26 February 2008 (UTC)Reply
Thanks. Will do. There are distinct kite-related reasons for various supplier paths. Joefaust (talk) 21:02, 26 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Typing sectors questioned. edit

Introduction material in discussion edit

Kites can be typed in several ways: Thoroughout kite literature people talk about kites in different ways; different skill levels; costing levels; quality levels; competitive levels; collectible levels; historicity; famous makers old and new; figure or not; dominant material...paper or aluminum foil, etc; for beginner or expert; hard or easy to make, artistic or plain, tiny or huge, practical or recreational, scientific or commercial, manned or not, experimental or tried-and-true, single tether or multiple tether, tailed or not; air or not-air; original from a famous maker or replica; this or that reputable manufacturer; insignificant or significant application. These various extant typings evident throughout the literature are simply organized from what is found in the literature. Specific nations type kites for regulations. Specific groups of manufacturers and commercial users of kites type kites along the lines important to their concerns. Sport kiting organizations have their own typing categories. Kite festivals type kites for kite contests. Patent offices type kites in certain ways. Sport competitors type kites in their own ways. Hydro kite companies and scientists type hydro non-air water kites in their own ways. No one point of view controls the freedom of the kite to be many things for many people as is evident in the kite literature over thousands of years. In presenting what occurs, some frame is chosen. Categorization is well noted. Looking at the published kite literature, one easily finds various typing of kites occurring for notable reasons. The task is to record the factual typing that does occur for significant and verifiable purposes. Joefaust (talk) 22:25, 27 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Replica edit

Kites may be typed by which famous kite is being replicated. Is the kite a replica of the famous Garber Target Kite that may have helped win a war? Is the kite a replica of a particular Hargrave box kite? Or of a first Rogallo Flexikite? Or of an early Domina Jalbert parafoil kite? Or of a Wright glider kite? Careful barrage-kite replicas. Careful Cody kite replicas. Museum uses of careful replicas. Scale replicas of famous kites. Notable holdings of replicas. Joefaust (talk) 21:50, 27 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Supplier path edit

One of a kind. Large 3-D. Artistic kites. Manned kites. Weight restrictions. Toy market. Import market. Hazardous material kites. Auctions and cautions on manned kites. Growth of use of kites because of compactness, collapsibility, lightness, ruggedness. Inventions of kite changes because of supplier-path alternatives. Kite festival delivery methods: out of the air, booth, reference to web sites, backorder...made-on-demand, etc. Joefaust (talk) 21:50, 27 February 2008 (UTC) Kites are sometimes typed by the supplier path. Is the kite available by mailorder? Can the kite be ordered online? Must the kite be picked up at the supplier's place of business or home? Can the kite be paid for by a certain payment method? Is the kite supplied only by way of demonstration and instruction? Is training by the supplier required before the kite is released to the customer? Joefaust (talk) 22:25, 27 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Life edit

By being manned or not. Is there life aboard the kite wing or not? Are there live animals or live plants on board? Is there virtual or remote life onboard? Manned kiting is an article in WP. Unmanned kiting is specifically an important realm. Carrying dogs on kites is done. Carrying injured birds on kites has gotten large attention. Collecting samples of air with its life and particles collected is well noted. Paresev kites were manned and unmanned for noted reasons of national importance. Virtual life or virtual eyes for real time viewing is done increasingly on aircraft and kites. KAP has a sector of manned, virtual real-time manned, and delayed photography. Joefaust (talk) 22:25, 27 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Visibility edit

Are the essential parts of the kite visible or not or how visible? Is the kiteline visible or not? How visible is the kiteline? Is the kite wing visible or not? How visible is the kite wing? Night kites have been a challenge. Special night kite displays at events. Keeping high altitude kites visible by color is noted for world-record altitude attempts. Kites have visibility personality about them at festivals; some are made to be more visible thatn others; some kites are plain work units and are made for economy, not visibility. Types of visibility forms focus of kite makers. Competition to be more noticed than another kite. Aim to keep a kite invisible for special reasons is a concern of some kite makers. The hidden-source hanging line trick by kiters is part of entertainment in recreation kitig.Joefaust (talk) 22:25, 27 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Size edit

(section is already in now, but discussion is still invited). Is the kite "giant"? Is it a mega-sized kite? Is it a large kite? Small kite? Miniature kite? Tiny kite? Microscopic kite? World records have been noted for largest kite of the world, smallest-ever kite. Giant display kites by Peter Lynn and others form part of the large notice of kiting in the world. Special sizing for Reynolds Number testing in wind tunnels have had national defense notice. There is patented claim for nano-sized kiting by David Culp. Joefaust (talk) 22:25, 27 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Mimic subject for kite appearance edit

When looking at the kite's main body, what is seen? Does the viewer see a mimic of an insect, butterfly, human figure, cultural scene, organization flag, national flag, mammal, bird, hawk, airplane, ball, flying saucer, alien, beverage container, house, sun, moon, star, famous cartoon character, or any other object. Want an insect kite for part of a grammar-school thematic lesson? Want a set of kites that look like the flags of the nations attending a big event? The huge set of figure kites, artistic kites, decoration-to-purpose kites ...all have to do with mimic subjects. Education uses this typing to plan lesson plans. Joefaust (talk) 22:25, 27 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

User aged edit

Kites are frequently typed for young children or adults. Sellers type and print labels along this typing. Contests type along this path. Designers plan toward this category. This is industry important and notable. Joefaust (talk) 22:25, 27 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Is the kite suitable for a toddler to hold in moderate 3 mph to 8 mph winds? 18. Wind leveled: Kites often are typed by the wind speed range within which the kite operates well. Is the kite designed primarily for indoor zero-wind activity? Does the kite operate without human-powered running the kite's kiteline anchor point when the wind is 3 mph at the kite's operating altitude? Does the kite fly well with 8 mph to 18 mph winds and not well when the wind is faster? Does the kite fly well in gusty winds? Is the kite a high-wind kite? Low-wind kite? Moderate-wind kite? Joefaust (talk) 22:25, 27 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Skill leveled edit

Beginner kite? Novice kite? Master kite? Expert's kite? Professional kite pilot's kite? Festivals, competitions, contests, hiring exhibitionists, demonstration planning, Joefaust (talk) 22:25, 27 February 2008 (UTC) The manned kite pilots of kite hang gliders are generally skill leveled by nationally organized instruction systems. Flying sites are leveled by the skill level that a hang glider pilot has earned.Reply

Kiteline breaking strength edit

Typing of a kite: Kites that well use kitelines that are under one-pound breaking strength, under 10 lb breaking strength, under 100 lb breaking strength, etc., are thus typed by the kiteline breaking strength. This concern regularly threads it way into design, purchasing, safety planning, kite-session planning, contest planning and management, Joefaust (talk) 22:25, 27 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Regulation typing edit

Does the kite have a quality that has it come under a certain regulation by some governing body? Is the kite so structured that it falls outside of a certain regulation? The governing bodies regulating kites that can be used span from school authorities, city govenors, state authorities, federal authorities, sports organizations, consumer products' regulatory agencies, parents, lifeguards, coast guards, waterway authorities, airspace control agencies. Is this specific kite allowed to be flown in this particular scenario? Each nation may control its own airspace with regulations. A particular kite-using company or a private kite-using person will have rules about kites; typing a particular kite relative to such rules is common practice. A two-line control kite does not ever win the single-line kite-contest event. A manned free-flying hang glider kite weighing over a certain amount must be licensed differently than if it was lighter than such a limit.ne breaking strength typing of a kite: Kites that well use kitelines that are under one-pound breaking strength, under 10 lb breaking strength, under 100 lb breaking strength, etc., are thus typed by the kiteline breaking strength. FAA regulates kites according to weight, passenger loading, commercial use, space use, altitude use. Other nations have regulations. Kite designers and sellers take regulations to mind as they perform their desinging and selling. Kite parks have limits to what can be flown at the park. Kite users buy and fly kites according to rules and regulations. Joefaust (talk) 22:25, 27 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Solar kite ....scientists and engineers are expanding the definition of "kite" edit

Either the payload tethered receiving a different photonic pressure than the kite's wing provides a tensional tug and/or the inertia change during acceleration provides the tug implied in traditional kiting. The low-density low sail-loading of a solar plasma kite may also dominate the use of the kite-typing done by contemporary workers in this solar kite field. The potential benefits of solar kiting for the future of human culture is great. When a child accidentally lets loose of a 1000' kite lined high-flying toy kite, the kite still is receiving some tug from the weight and drag of the kite line. However, the kite's wing does not immediately receive zero relative airspeed; kiting continues. Appreciating some of this matter of the free-flying kite might help the understanding of how contemporary scientists are applying the term kite to solar kites that fly and deflect in the plasma or photonic stream of the sun's radiation. When attitude is controlled by the special means they are exploring, then the kite is deflected according to controls. Joefaust (talk) 19:57, 8 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Bad links? edit

In copyediting this article (in Firefox), when I clicked on this link:

Why a kite needs a tail.

...in the "Stability" section (to make sure it worked before enclosing it in <ref> tags) my computer crashed; since I don't think it was a coincidence, rather than delete the link I moved it here.Wi2g 16:53, 11 March 2011 (UTC) *Replaced link; file opens fine; consider exploring your personal configuration of your PDF reader. There's also what seems to be an orphan (unformatted) link in the "A" category: The Joy of Making Both Art and Kites. Looks like a book/article title; maybe someone can flesh it out. Wi2g 17:38, 12 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

I'm done trying to copyedit this article, since yet another of the many external links (in "E" of the alphabet section) caused my computer to crash:

Meet the Kite Maker Mikio Toki

"in Firefox" is much less descriptive than telling what PDF reader you are using. Both links work fine for me (Firefox, Foxit Reader). Both as plug-in for Firefox and stand-alone file from local drive. Also works with Chrome's built-in reader. —  HELLKNOWZ  ▎TALK 11:23, 14 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

Drachen Foundation is THE leading kite source. The challenge you experienced has something special to you and "FireFox" and the way your PDF reader is configured. The PDF worked fine on the Adobe Reader in Internet Explorer in later versions. The link can be placed back in the article. Article clean-up edit

I have given this article a good hair-cut, removing or editing a bucket-load of dross and hyperbolae. It isn't perfect, but I think it is a lot better than it was.Petebutt (talk) 07:11, 10 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

POV weirdness edit

Currently it says, "Kite flying has been enjoyed for thousands of years in South Asia and the Indian subcontinent. The goal is to cut off the rival kite (usually flown by someone on a neighbouring rooftop)." Sounds like somebody got confused about the geographic history of kite-flying vs the role of their personal interest in kite-fighting. Kite flying is not synonymous with kite-fighting, and it is not true that for thousands of years it has been normal practice to attack the strings of any neighboring kites.71.63.160.210 (talk) 20:31, 19 July 2021 (UTC)Reply
