My guess is that you will only want to edit the Kiap article, rather than become a regular editor. So, I am willing to help you do that, because there is a lot of learning needed to add material to articles without someone challenging your work. --Greenmaven (talk) 05:34, 13 December 2013 (UTC)

Thanks for talking to my friend. I am confident that you are Chris Viner-Smith. I am going to read up on WP policies on copyright. WP management is extremely averse to breaching people's copyright, even when the author is adding his own work. I will follow that up for you. --Greenmaven (talk) 06:01, 13 December 2013 (UTC)

I am glad your friend Robyn convinced you that I am chris Viner-Smith - I can get the AFP Commissioner to verify if required. This process is cumbersome and not very practical as there are so many barriers and protocols that I have no clue about - I just want to put some important information on the site - that it would be useful if rather than tell me what I cannot do, tell me what I need to do to get the article onto the site. Thank you for following up what seems to me to be ridiculous - that I might not be able to quote from my own book, but if it helps I can rewrite the stuff - I can put up something from me can't I - I don't need it to be validated by the AG or someone who has no idea of what I am talking about?

Your assistance would be greatly appreciated. Perhaps you could talk me through it?

An author's own work

I have a question on copyright, for which I have not yet been able to find an answer. Is it acceptable for an author to cut and paste a section of his own book into a WP article? Let us assume the added text is of moderate length. In other words: does an author have rights not available to other editors? Greenmaven (talk) 01:49, 15 December 2013 (UTC)

Welcome to the Teahouse, Jack Greenmaven. The simple answer is "no" in most ordinary circumstances. If the author in question wishes to retain full copyright of the work, then only a brief cited quotation is permissible, which normally should not exceed two or three sentences. And it makes no copyright difference whether it is the author or any other editor who adds a cited quote.

It is possible for an author to release their previously published work under an acceptable Creative Commons license, so that it can be freely used by anyone, anywhere, but even in that case, it would be considered bad form and not encyclopedic to add a lengthy passage to Wikipedia.
