According to Ken Boothe in an interview in the french magazine "Natty Dread" #4 (Dec 2000/Jan 2001), 'I'll be 52 this month'. Considering the interview was made earlier the same year, he's born in 1948 (which is the most frequent year date for him on internet among 46, 48 and 51). Ton1

First single

The article states his first singles were recorded at Studio One, but this article states his first single was on Treasure Isle ("Uno Dos Tres"). Can anyone verify?--Chimino (talk) 15:17, 24 January 2013 (UTC)

He recorded as a solo artist in 1966 for Clement Dodd ("You're No Good") and in 1967 for Dodd, Phil Pratt, and Sonia Pottinger - I'm not aware of any solo releases prior to 1966. "Uno Dos Tres" was a single he cut as a duo with Stranger Cole for Treasure Isle - he recorded as part of at least two duos before going solo, and my guess would be that "Uno Dos Tres" wasn't the first single he recorded with Cole. --Michig (talk) 15:42, 24 January 2013 (UTC)

Chronology and choice of songs mentioned

The chronology is a bit all over the place so I'll have a go at sorting it out. I would also like to be more selective about which tracks to include. Boothe's back catalog has numerous classic songs and these need to be highlighted.

I'm going to return to finish the U-Roy article first (it needs more work) and then I'll come back here.

Where is the song "Is It Because I'm Black" - thats a killer tune - bass, vibes, vocals and lyrics and a great example of ensemble playing where everyone is doing it right. Where's "Love Don't Love Nobody" - this is ridiculous and thats just two songs out of a dozen or so that I can think of from just the top of my head. Lets make this article represent Ken Boothe "heart" and "soul". I'll give it a go but if anyone else wants to have a try in the meantime then go ahead.

Releases and some observations:

Hush Baby (ska track in the duo form that was popular in the 1960s)

Worlds Fair (ska track - stronger vocals and song than the above and very "soulful" in feeling - got a bit of Sam Cooke riffing)

Hush - (ska track - same backing track as Hush Baby but credited only to Cole - the YouTube video says "probably Ken Boothe on backing vocals")

Artibella - (killa ska tune - bass and vocals right on the money - also some of the classic Boothe vocalizations that we hear on his later hits are evident)

Just using the four above I would suggest removing the "Hush" track since it was released as strictly a Cole single and also need to highlight the emerging vocal style of Boothe as heard in "Artibella".

I listened to both parts of the interview. They last an hour each and Boothe discusses the early history of reggae as well as providing many details on other artists and producers. The interviews feature lengthy musical selections sometimes including the dubs. Part 1 of the interview starts with four or five songs before Boothe speaks so the interview starts after 5 minutes or so.

I've placed this here. It is an "unusual fact" but then so is Paul McCartney walking across Abbey Road with no shoes on (trust me you don't want to know what some people have assigned to this act - think Life of Brian and the sandal) but both should not be "featured" as highly pertinent to understanding the artist and his art. Music is a creative process and Boothe has a large body of work and life experiences to explore (especially in relation to the fledgling Jamaican record industry, African diaspora, other musicians of note, etc) so with that in mind there are more important details to include into this article.

Removed Material

An unusual fact about Boothe's cover version is that he sings "Anything I Own", rather than "Everything I Own" throughout, meaning that the title of the record is never sung. There have been other examples of this at Number One in the UK Singles Chart, such as "Bohemian Rhapsody"; "Unchained Melody"; "Annie's Song" and "Space Oddity"; but Boothe's record is the only one on which the title should have been sung, but was not by mistake.
