Minor grammar changes

Total newbie to this; look forward to guidance on protocol. In any case, I suggest authors

(1) change "...New York City, there he was ..." to "...New York City, _where_ he was ..."; (2) end following sentence with a period; (3) next paragraph: "The exhibitions were..." . *What* exhibitions were "put on film"? (4) when he began to paint on canvas, what was his medium? Oil? Acryluc? Mixed?

Note placed in Talk page for 216.120.141.3

Some recent edits by 216.120.141.3 (somebody at Wayland Union School) to Keith Haring were reverted as repeating what was already in the article, but there was some new information added as well. Putting it all in one cluster at the end of the original article was definitely not the way to go. Why not take a stab at integrating just your new material into the body of the article, while maintaining the same general style? --CliffC 02:29, 5 November 2006 (UTC)

Is it necessary to say: " Keith's parents wanted to name all their children with names that started with K.", since this is clearly what they did? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 195.166.150.12 (talk) 07:40, 4 May 2012 (UTC)

Some POV to prune

The "Public Attention" and "Legacy" sections contain some unsourced statements that read like POV to me. The first is "His bold lines, vivid colors, and active figures carry strong messages of life and unity." The second is "By expressing concepts of birth, death, love, sex and war, Haring's imagery has become a widely recognized visual language of the 20th century.". I disagree that Haring's work contains "concepts" or "strong messages of life and unity", or that it's a "visual language" of any type (any more than say, the "Kilroy was here" figure of WWII fame possesses a "visual language"). His work consists of pictographs, sometimes in groups, sometimes set in a ground, and at other times, not. This view is shared by many of my colleagues in the contemporary art world who saw Haring's work as rather shallow and impotent, and certainly not possessing a "visual language". Language carries information that can be combined in complex ways to express complex ideas. Haring's pictographs are what they appear to be on the surface; nothing more. No combination of "radiant babies", falling bombs and dancing figures is going to mean more than that. Unless someone can come up with an "expert witness" or some other justification for those phrases, I think they're simply POV and should be removed. Bricology (talk) 18:59, 15 February 2009 (UTC)

Planned Changes

Hi! I'm Pomphreyhm, I plan to make some additions to this page over the next few weeks. It's for a class assignment, all edits will be complete by 11/12 (that's the due date). I'm just getting started with this project now, there probably won't be any substantial additions for at least two weeks. Thanks in advance! I specifically intend to add additional information about how Haring's sexuality influenced his work. Keep /your/ 'POV' comments about someone else's 'POV' comments to /your/self! Everything written expresses a 'POV', as it happens. Some have a wide following, others don't. It is arbitrary and illogical to criticise someone else's 'POV' without acknowledging your own.

Automatically jumping to conclusions just because I told another to refrain from posting POV? Did I criticize that person's POV? Did I actively push a POV? I'm merely repeating the guidelines. These kinds of topics should not be discussed on this page as it is not a forum. That comment is a POV, just like yours. I have NO opinion nor comment on the topic itself, and my previous reply does not mean that I have a POV. I'm terrible at Wikipedia, but I would just like to recommend someone mention that Keith Haring collaborated on this collection. Cut and paste job

It is plainly obvious that entire sections of this entry have simply been cut and pasted from other sources. One of the more obvious examples is this one from the "Sexuality and Homosexuality" section: "The possible messages that can be identified in THIS painting have more power when the viewer takes into account Haring’s aim of being sexually progressive– and progressive on behalf of the homosexual community – in his work"(emphasis mine). The use of the word "this" makes it abundantly obvious that the quoted sentence was referring to a specific work of art. The author of that section has simply pasted an entire portion of a particular book into the entry without even accounting for the fact that those reading the entry will have no idea which of Haring's works is being discussed. Here is another obvious example, taken from the section entitled "AIDS diagnosis": "'Haring's way of living life – liberated and with death in mind at a young age – allowed him to pull himself away from his diagnosis,' Blinderman writes." Who and the hell is Blinderman? Yet another paragraph excised from the work of others and pasted, unaltered, into the entry without a thought as to how it appears.74.134.145.218 (talk) 03:31, 3 January 2014 (UTC)

Article Critique - Needs more citations

Hello! I'll be doing some edits and critiquing this article for a class assignment. I believe that the article needs more citations in certain sections, specifically in the section titled "AIDS." This is a very large section with a lot of information, but has only 4 citations, all from the same source. If more citations were included from a larger variety of sources, the section would seem more reliable and trustworthy. Throughout the entire article, there is a nice use of many different, reliable sources, but this specific section does not seem to have enough citing for the amount of information it provides. Secondly, the section titled "Influences" that introduces the discussion of Keith Haring's work being influenced by sexuality and AIDS seems a bit biased. Although it introduces the section, it does so in a way that is slightly opinionated. The introduction uses words like "important" in description the subject matter of Haring's work and also mentions that one of his works is "almost universally agreed upon" as being HIV/AIDS activism. Those phrases are not supported by facts and while they summarize the preceding information, they seem to be coming from the biased viewpoint of someone who respects Keith Haring and views his work as being extremely important. Although I also value Keith Haring's work, I don't think that these statements are neutral enough. One could use the introduction to state that a particular critic or art figure talked about Haring's work and claims that his piece Silence = Death is in fact a piece about HIV/AIDS activism, but merely stating that it is "almost" agreed upon is not supported by any facts. Otherwise, all the links seemed to be working and all the citations are correct. Thank you! TaylorSchroeder (talk) 05:04, 26 October 2016 (UTC)

Religious background?

The "Early life and education" section includes this statement: "In Haring's teenage years, he left his religious background behind...." But there is nothing in the article that discusses his family's religion, or that indicates that his family or upbringing was particularly religious. The quoted statement should be supported with additional information or removed.—99.26.130.45 (talk) 23:35, 13 July 2017 (UTC)

Select Article: Early life, Legacy, and Death (Grace)

I want to add in the opening paragraph: Haring's work was often heavily political[3] and his simple imagery has become a widely recognized visual language that addresses inextricable issues like AIDs and drug abuse of the 20th century.

Early Life
I want to add that he relocated to NYC in 1978 to attend School of Visual Arts (SVA). In 1980, although Haring experimented with performance, video, collage, he found a highly effective medium that allowed him to communicate with the wider audience on an artistic and political level by using the city as his canvas. He is widely known for the drawings he created with white chalk against a black unused advertisement backboard in subway stations. He would create about 50 "subway drawing" a day.

Legacy
He opened up a path for underground cartoonist Matt Groeining's Simpsons through his credibility to street art.

I also want to include something about the Keith Haring Foundation 1989 = fought tirelessly in his work and personal life to end the AIDS epidemic and generated activism - work was featured in more than 100 solo and group exhibitions - 1982 to 1989 to produce more than 50 public artworks in dozens of cities created for charities, hospitals, children day care centers, orphanages

Exhibitions
I want to clarify: 1 source. Also in 1978, Haring's first solo exhibition at Pittsburgh Arts and Crafts center. 2 source. First solo exhibition in NY then soho gallery debut with immensely poplar highly one-man exhibition at Tony Zhafrazi gallery.)

Edit/Add Article & Reasons

Opening paragraph
Haring's work was often heavily political[3] and his simple imagery has become a widely recognized visual language that addresses inextricable issues like AIDs and drug abuse of the 20th century.

I wanted to add the last part of the sentence to specify what his work and artistic style addressed.

Early Life
I want to add that he relocated to NYC in 1978 to attend School of Visual Arts (SVA).

I believe his subway drawings were one the most famous contributions he made as an artist and therefore needs to be included especially the significance of why he chose to do it on the blank advertisement boards.

Legacy
He opened up a path for underground cartoonist Matt Groeining's Simpsons through his credibility to street art.

I want to include this because most generations (Gen Y, millennials) have grown up watching The Simpsons Series. Although it is an animated cartoon and has subtle satire, there are numerous connections to current events that youth as well as adults can learn from. I believe the show has had some sort of indirect impact on our lives today whether it was intentional or unintentional.

Kieth Haring Foundation 1989
I also want to include something about the Keith Haring Foundation 1989 = fought tirelessly in his work and personal life to end the AIDS epidemic and generated activism - work was featured in more than 100 solo and group exhibitions - 1982 to 1989 to produce more than 50 public artworks in dozens of cities created for charities, hospitals, children day care centers, orphanages

I believe the Kieth Haring Foundation has played a very significant role in the HIV/AIDS movement as well as supporting other non-profit organization. I really appreciate that the foundation supports organizations that provide educational opportunities to underprivileged children and the support of organizations which engage in education, prevention and care with respect to AIDS and HIV infection

Exhibitions
I want to clarify: 1 source states that Haring's first solo exhibition was at Pittsburgh Arts and Crafts center, but another source that I found stated that his first solo exhibition in NY then soho gallery debut with immensely poplar highly one-man exhibition at Tony Zhafrazi gallery.

I believe it is important to get the facts correct and recheck with several sources so that we can share an unbiased, factual information about the artist.

Hey all! I think you’re doing a phenomenal job on the Keith Haring wiki page. I checked the citations that were added and they all seem to be working just fine. Additionally, the page is very neutral content wise and sticks to facts about Keith – which is awesome! I particularly liked that the sections on AIDS and Sexuality are more represented because his work was mostly on these topics of discussion. I’m not sure if enough information is available for this, but because I liked how you talked about his work prior to the AIDS era, I think it would be really helpful for a reader to see the connection between the two, or rather how his artwork went from other international gigs to a deep focus on AIDS work. As I was reading the changes you all have already made, I also noticed someone deleted and then recreated a section on how Keith left his religious background. I think this is a really key concept that needed to have its own section because when learning about Keith in class, it was mentioned that this fact itself heavily contributed to his work. Giving it the importance it deserves by creating a separate paragraph was a great move. I saw a lot of wholesome information on his upbringing, but if any information is available, I think it would be great to incorporate how his experiences may have led to the types of artwork he made. Maybe an interview could help if one exists? I also think it’s worth mentioning some of the images he repeatedly used – for example Mickey Mouse to represent evil, because they played a big role in his work as well. Thank you for your feedback Parbhar95. I wanted to add about the positive/negative characters about his artwork that we learned in class, but I haven't have any good articles describing his work in detail in regards to AIDS/HIV. Will work on it, thanks again. Ghwang3 (talk) 02:19, 17 November 2017 (UTC)
@Ghwang3: Please read my comment below: There is already way too much about AIDS/sexuality in this article, please do not add any more. Also, Parbhar95's post was most definitely not a "peer review", it was a comment from someone who has only made 41 Wikipedia edits(!), almost entirely to Userpages and article-talk: [2]. You folks really need to "get a clue" before trying to make large-scale edits to an important Wikipedia article (you still haven't learned basic Wikipedia markup). Please at the very least do The Wikipedia Adventure that I posted on your talkpage. Softlavender (talk) 03:15, 17 November 2017 (UTC)
@Softlavender: I understand that editing Wikipedia articles is important to you, but us "folks" have to include information about Keith Haring and his influence on HIV/AIDS for a class assignment as well as a so called "not-a-peer review". Trust me, we understand that maintaining a well-resourced and informational article is essential, but we are just doing what we are assigned to do in order to get an A. So if you have a problem with our input, please email our professor. By the way, there is no such thing as "too much information".
Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, not a classroom or class wiki. Softlavender (talk) 21:46, 8 December 2017 (UTC)
Ghwang3, like any other Wikipedia editor, you are responsible for the edits you make, not your teacher. Likewise, your class assignments and grade are not our concern either: that's on you, too. (And yes, there is such a thing as "too much information". I'm not convinced there's problem with the coverage of AIDS and sexuality themes in Haring's work here, but part of our responsibility is to give topics the proper weight and balance within an article.) -Jason A. Quest (talk) 21:52, 8 December 2017 (UTC)
In terms of the sections on Sexuality/AIDS, the case is actually that currently these topics consume undue weight in this Wikipedia article. It is not true that "his work was mostly on these topics of discussion", and this Wikipedia article needs to be expanded on his other work for correct balance (or the Sexuality/AIDS sections need to be reduced). Softlavender (talk) 08:02, 11 November 2017 (UTC)

Sorry, I named the section peer review as it was a class assignment for students that had been working on this article. I understand your choice to change it and think you're correct. Could you please inform me of some appropriate resources to find more on his work that doesn't solely represent Sexuality/AIDS so I can help add to the article? Thanks! Parbhar95 (talk) 19:52, 11 November 2017 (UTC)

What a mess! I've removed the sections on AIDS and sexuality, as they consisted entirely (unless I missed some jewel of wisdom) of WP:OR, unreferenced or referenced only to Haring himself, and an excessive amount of quotation, of questionable relevance and without any discussion to justify its inclusion. Parts were copied or close-paraphrased from sources such as this and this.
I also suggest removing the "popular culture" section, as fortunately Wikipedia doesn't do those any more. While this one is, unlike most, quite well referenced, it remains a formless agglomeration of trivial detail which should properly be covered in the pages on the various trivial topics. But before I do that, does anyone object? Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 21:12, 30 December 2017 (UTC)
I think that your massive WP:BOLD deletions (8,000 bytes, 20% of the entire article) were quite rash. Most all of the material was cited, and not to Haring, but to secondary sources. (For instance, the reference Keith Haring: Heaven and Hell was improperly notated; it is not by Haring, but rather is a collection of art criticism essays by six art critics.) Softlavender (talk) 06:11, 31 December 2017 (UTC)
Indeed it is, Softlavender – I looked at it while trying to decide if any part of that content was rescuable. It was used as a source for two quotations. Please correct me if I'm wrong here, but I believe that was the only independent source cited in those three paragraphs? The bulk of the content was completely unsourced. We shouldn't be writing stuff like "The symbolism in his work bears the weight of this oppression. The burden of the egg in cat. no. 27 could be seen to represent the oppressive effects AIDS had brought on the individuals dealing with the disease. The idea of anonymous sex was becoming more and more taboo in the homosexual community, and gay men were facing more and more discrimination as people reacted in fear to the epidemic" anywhere in this encyclopaedia, and we most definitely should not be writing it without any vestige of a source. That's leaving aside the copyvio problems (close following and some outright copy-paste from the two sources I cited above), and also the question of whether anyone who thinks that "cat. no. 27" is the title of an artwork should be even attempting to edit a relatively high-profile page such as this one. That said, if you can see any useable and properly-sourced content in what I removed, do please restore it. Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 20:36, 31 December 2017 (UTC)
(A) The bulk of the arguably problematical material was added en masse by an SPA in 2013: [3]. (B) The citations in the material that you removed en masse (not equivalent to the material added in 2013, since some editors, including myself, had improved, cited, edited, trimmed, and/or added to it) were mislabeled, confusingly labeled, and incorrectly consolidated. Here is the breakdown of the 5 citations, and only one source (his journals) is by Haring himself; the other four are independent sources:
  • Heaven and Hell (cited 6 times, under two different refs, at least one of which is incorrectly notated and named)
  • Future Primeval (cited 2 times)
  • Radiant Eros (cited 1 time)
  • Haring and AIDS (cited 1 time)
  • Haring's Journals (cited 6 times)

Some sub-headings could use more information, such as the Keith Haring Foundation, fashion, influences, and so forth. There is a part under the "Early Life and Education" section where it talks about Haring leaving his religious background, but it does not state which religion he practice or what were his parents religious background. Under "Fashion" it mentions Haring and Grace Jones working together for performances, but it does not say what the performances were or any information of them. Not only is the Warhol photo copyrighted and whilst CC photos of him are available (therefore failing fair use), the Warhol photo in the white T-shirt looks like a severed head. This was way overdue but I finally had the deleted photo restored. Cheers for Creative Commons! The lorax (talk) 21:50, 11 November 2019 (UTC)

The signature should be part of the summary table

Title, in other articles the signature is in the summary table Fivework (talk) 16:44, 29 March 2021 (UTC)

There is no parameter for a signature in the artist infobox, so I changed it to person and added the signature.--Twixister (talk) 18:58, 29 March 2021 (UTC)
