Talk:Kaspar Brunner

Spelling edit

I am not sure if the spelling of the title of this page is ideal. Obviously it is not the way the guy spelled his own name, and in 1530 spelling of course was not standardised yet. The nameplate of his only known work, the Zytglogge, which is a forged iron plate presu, mably made by Brunner in 1530 gives his name as KASPER BRUNER.

Obviously the modern spelling of his first name would be KASPAR and most people with that surname now spell it as BRUNNER

Is there a Wikipedia policy on the spelling of historic names?

Well, best practice is to use the spelling variant most commonly used in the sources (see WP:MCP). In all reference books on the Zytglogge that I have read, his name is spelled as "Kaspar Brunner", including the cited reference, Ueli Bellwald's works cited in the Zytglogge article and Markus Marti, Wie funktioniert die astronomische Uhr am Zytglogge in Bern?, in: ORION 200 (1984) p. 30 et seq. This is the name he's identified with in the literature, and as such, that's the name people expect to read here.  Sandstein  07:26, 9 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
