John de Lancie Sr.'s date of death

The article states, "John de Lancie's father, of the same name, was principal oboist of the Philadelphia orchestra for many years. He died in 2001." I heard that he died May 17, 2002 at the age of 80. Q0 18:00, 13 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Agent Darkbooty in Invader Zim?

Was John the voice of Agent Darkbooty on Invader Zim? It sounds a lot like him in a couple of the episodes.--Azathar 04:58, 25 August 2005 (UTC)

Yes. According to IMDB, he did the voice for Agent Darkbootie / Darkbootie twice. PrometheusX303 00:58, 20 January 2006 (UTC)

I believe he and a few other Trek actors (including Jennifer Lien) got together to move their way into voice acting, and went on to help their fellow actors from Star Trek get more voice work. Sorry, no references otherewise I'd post on the main page not here. Horkana

Serious Improvement Needed

Hi, I'm trying to improve this article because its the first article that I have found that I am appalled by. An editor has just copy pasted stuff directely off Startrek.com. If you are reading this and a bit more experienced at Wikipedia that I am then help out, and make John de Lancie happy! Jrgnet Talk 08:57, 25 August 2006 (UTC)

Host for Compaq

I remember John de Lancie also was a host for new Compaq Presario owners, both on TV commercials and on interactive video introductions and technical assistance on the systems themselves. When you first powered on the system, de Lancie would pop up on the desktop and explain the features of the owners new Compaq system. Compaq no doubt chose de Lancie because their logo was a Q. His son did commercials for Dell. I thought this was interesting. 68.252.127.172 20:17, 9 October 2006 (UTC)

Narrator credits

I'm not sure where Narrator credits should go. He's a narrator for some Discovery Channel shows, including "Conspiracy Test: The Oklahoma City Bombing," "Conspiracy Test: James Earl Ray Assassination of Martin Luther King," and "Inside the Bermuda Triangle." See here for confirmation from IMDb users. -Etoile 18:13, 29 September 2007 (UTC)

Erronious reference to KCRW

I'm pretty sure the radio show "The Play's the Thing" (in which actors perform plays and screenplays for radio broadcast) has nothing to do with KCRW or NPR, as this article implies. Rather, the show is closely tied to KPCC and is probably produced by that station.

Television list table?

Am I just misunderstanding, or is the television roles table lacking any kind of organization? The shows don't appear to be chronological nor alphabetical. Syrthiss (talk) 13:26, 8 September 2011 (UTC)

Peer Gynt

In 1994 Jonathan De Lancie performed Peer Gynt with Sally Kellerman and the Los Angeles Philharmonic under the prodigy, Essa-Pekka Salonen. This is from my own memory, and therefore it needs better sourcing.Pigdog234 (talk) 14:01, 26 February 2013 (UTC)

Video Game voices

I posted on this page about him doing voices in the video game Quantum Conundrum, but someone then removed it the second i put it down. Please look at the page Quantum Conundrum. It even states on it he does the narrator and voice of the professor on it. It should be included on his wikipedia page here. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 73.255.93.23 (talk) 19:12, 23 March 2016 (UTC)

IP vandalism

A certain IP editor continues to add text that is inappropriate. adding misspelled versions of de Lancie's name from IMDb as "aliases" or "other names", for one. Wrong birth name is another (John not Jonathan). Adding about ten or so duplicated categories is another (i.e. Category:American actors and Category:American male actors). He/she has already been warned and an editwarring case brought at ANI resulting in, unfortunately, a very brief page protection period, but he/she continues. My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic

It's pretty clear from even a cursory search that he did indeed voice a character on this show. Whether that belongs in the lead or not is something that can and should be discussed here. Beeblebrox (talk) 20:10, 2 October 2011 (UTC)

When the article was first edited with this information, it was so poorly referenced (with an internet forum thread!), that I first thought this was some kind of vandalism. To be honest, I didn't even know My Little Pony still existed. Now it is pretty clear that de Lancie did the voice work. I think that it can still be sourced better, though. However, the claim that this is one of the roles he is "most well known" for is laughable at best, and delusional at worst. It's sort of like claiming that Gillian Anderson is most well-known for voicing one of the wolves in Princess Mononoke. I think part of the problem is that this article is in such poor shape, and so few people work on it. I plan to gather sources to improve it later this month. Hopefully, better writing and sourcing will discourage spurious edits. Help is always appreciated, though! AstroCog (talk) 21:33, 2 October 2011 (UTC)
Agree with AstroCog that DeLancie is not "most well known" as Discord outside of the My Little Pony fanbase. I did want to point out that Discord is an antagonist with supernatural powers who shares many easily-identifiable personality traits and mannerisms with Q. The connection may be worthy of note on this page, especially if DeLancie's other characters are not also obvious Q analogs. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 207.86.197.162 (talk)
You didn't know My Little Pony still existed? Even back in October of last year? That's pretty lame. dogman15 (talk) 16:47, 12 December 2012 (UTC)

I would like to point out that John de Lancie himself tweeted saying that the My Little Pony fanbase is bigger than the Star Trek fanbase, so perhaps it should be listed as his most notable role. (Although, I'd keep the stuff about Q in there too, just say both are notable.) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 64.69.158.250 (talk) 22:58, 2 February 2012 (UTC)

I disagree. Star Trek is a much larger body of work that goes far further into the public psyche even if there are currently more fans of a series currently running than a series that hasn't had a new television series in ... ... too long. Show a random person on the street a photo of de Lancie as Q, be it in a Starfleet uniform or the Judge's Robes and they'll be more likely to say "Oh yeah that's Q/John de Lancie" versus showing them a photo of... whatever character he voiced on that cartoon. Probably less likely to think you're a creep, too. 67.163.142.8 (talk) 02:50, 3 August 2012 (UTC)
I'm as much of a brony as anyone, and I can certainly say that John De Lancie is most recognizable as Q, not as Discord. His popularity *recently* has been with Discord, however, and I can see no reason why Friendship is Magic cannot be in the opening paragraph of the article. But he is BEST known as Q. ~ PonyToast...§ 05:46, 21 August 2012 (UTC)
Discord was never an antagonist or a villain or anything bad. He is just a mischievous prankster who is genuinely a protagonist and a hero. --24.251.87.63 (talk) 13:23, 10 May 2016 (UTC)

Okay, at this point John de Lancie has been in 13 MLP episodes, while Frank Simmons and Donald Margolis, which are mentioned in the opening paragraph as recurring roles were only in 5 and 4 episodes of Stargate SG-1 and Breaking Bad respectively. Also, considering how big the brony fan base has been, and that Discord is a fan favorite character in MLP, I would still say the Discord role is much more popular than all of his roles aside from Q. Also, John de Lancie is actually a brony himself (proof here) who has often been involved with the fan base, showing up at several conventions and even making a documentary to help people understand bronies better. Because of all this, I think is role as Discord is worth noting in the opening paragraph as one of the roles he is mainly known for, so I added it in. 2601:206:4001:7696:D18C:8554:84D2:A356 (talk) 08:00, 28 December 2016 (UTC)

Manual of Style: Links in Headers

We have a slow edit war over putting a link to Star Trek in the header of the same name. Per the Wikipedia Manual of Style, section Headers, says "Headings should normally not contain links, especially where only part of a heading is linked." In this case, linking Star Trek in the first sentence of the section suffices. Pinging 24.251.29.163 to discuss. --A D Monroe III (talk) 18:09, 30 June 2016 (UTC)

@A D Monroe III: Wow, this is a slow edit war, as that IP hasn't edited John de Lancie since June 2016.   No, headings should not contain links per MOS:HEAD as you've correctly noted. I've fixed the issue here. Also, you were wise to open a discussion, so thanks for that.
This user, however, (Phoenix, Arizona; ISP: COX) I believe to be a disruptive editor who has created similar problems across a number of articles. (See: MisterAnthony, 24.251.24.185 (talk · contribs · WHOIS), 2600:8800:3081:6040:7cd2:78a5:643c:9b7 (talk · contribs · WHOIS), etc.) Some of their edits are constructive, but some of their edits are simply boneheaded and there's apparently no way to communicate with them, which makes the net result of their edits rather useless, since they require constant cleanup and cause needless frustration. If this occurs again, you may consider the user "de facto banned" and you may revert without concern for violating WP:3RR. Please be sure you're reverting the right guy, and it would be helpful if you'd use some kinda edit summary like, "Sock IP of MisterAnthony - WP:REVERTBAN". Hope that helps. Oh, one last thing, I don't think that IPs get ping notifications. We typically have to drop talkback notifications on their talk page. Take care, Cyphoidbomb (talk) 16:43, 28 December 2016 (UTC)

Manual of Style: Logical Quotes

We have a slow edit war over the placement of commas and quote marks. Per the Wikipedia Manual of Style, we follow Logical Quote style in articles, regardless of all other local styles or personal preferences. Pinging 24.251.29.163 to discuss. --A D Monroe III (talk) 18:05, 30 June 2016 (UTC)

You are correct. Please see conversation below. The IP editor may be considered "de facto banned". See MisterAnthony. Cyphoidbomb (talk) 16:44, 28 December 2016 (UTC)

Compaq Presario Into

John Delancie did an intro for a series of Compaq Presario computers in the late 1990s, and I think this should be mentioned here. See the following youtube - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cKD9XAP_16k I would add it but I really don't know how to write it. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 108.67.137.213 (talk) 09:52, 1 February 2017 (UTC)

John or Jonathan?

The cited reference (metacritic) reads:

"John de Lancie (born March 20, 1948 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) is a U.S. character actor ...."

—no mention of "Jonathan".

The bio section of his own website http://delancie.com/about/ reads:

"John de Lancie is an american actor, ....
"He was born on march 20, 1948, ...."

—no mention of "Jonathan".

Before June 27, 2015 (!!), this article read:

"John de Lancie (born March 20, 1948) is an American actor, ....
"De Lancie was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, ...."

Then an IP User:98.180.138.93 changed it to read:

"Jonathan "John" de Lancie (born March 20, 1948) is an American actor, ...."
"de Lancie was born Jonathan de Lancie in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania ...."

The name Jonathan is a fabrication of this (globally locked) user, definitely MisterAnthony, who seems to assume that John is just a shortened form of Jonathan. (It isn't, of course—see the wictionary entries for the two names.) He made a similar change to John Mahoney and created versions of Dana Gould on various small wikis with the middle name changed from John to Jonathan, e.g. ast:Dana Gould, bar:Dana Gould. The error has spilled over into wikidata.

I'm going to fix the name. If you can find a reliable source for Jonathan, please revert. But watch out: some external sites have picked up the Jonathan from enwiki. —Tortoise0308 (talk) 19:41, 26 January 2018 (UTC)

His date of birth

According to this page (see just above), the article used to say he was born in 1948. But now it only includes the category '1948 births' and that's it... Is there a reason it was removed? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 89.111.226.192 (talk) 13:37, 22 June 2019 (UTC)

There was no WP:RS provided, so I removed it. Source was a tweet, which cannot be used. All items on a BLP need a RS. RobP (talk) 14:36, 22 June 2019 (UTC)
...well, the source was this tweet by de Lancie himself. WP:BLPSPS says: "Never use self-published sources—including but not limited to books, zines, websites, blogs, and tweets—as sources of material about a living person, unless written or published by the subject of the article." (bold in original). Primary and self-published sources may indeed be used as a source for what a person says about themself. Now, of course, you could decide to be pedantic and say "aha - then we can only use that source to say that is what he claims his birth year to be", and, technically, that would be correct. It is not, however, correct to say that a tweet cannot be used as a source on a BLP - care must be taken, but a verified tweet is perfectly acceptable as a record of what the tweeter has said about themself. An article cannot be primarily based on such a source, nor can it convey notability, but the notion that tweet=forbidden is not completely correct.

In this case, though, it's quite vague, and I don't really see a specific date claimed, just the age of 70 in 2018, so I think I agree with excluding it. It's dated November 2018, and he says "recently" so it's a pretty darn good assumption he means he was born in 1948, but an assumption and an inference it still is... Of course, that means we should not have the category either... If you exclude the mention from the article as unsourced then you have to exclude the category too, for the same reason. -- Begoon 15:11, 22 June 2019 (UTC)

Sounds reasonable to use this then, but as mentioned only for the approx age. I suggest adding it back with the template that gives an approx age based on a known age on a given day! I used that on the Bob Nygaard article. RobP (talk) 16:25, 22 June 2019 (UTC)
His new website doesn't seem to give a date of birth, but there's an archive of when it did. That's obviously where the "March 20, 1948" mentioned above came from. Amusingly, that old version of his site told people to come here to find out more... -- Begoon 16:42, 22 June 2019 (UTC)

Humanism and atheism

Hello all. An anonymous user just changed the first sentence about his (lack of) religious beliefs from "is a humanist and an atheist" to "is a humanist and therefore an atheist". I'm aware that many people think that by definition humanists are atheists, but I don't think that is supported by the wikipedia article on humanism. We could spend the next six months debating whether "therefore an unbeliever" might work, but the best is probably to revert to "is a humanist and an atheist". Any opposition to that? Robincantin (talk) 18:02, 10 September 2019 (UTC)

Done. That was an inane edit. I actually met someone who self identified as a "Christian Humanist" at a Humanist meetup. RobP (talk) 00:40, 11 September 2019 (UTC)

Nationality in infobox

Per {{infobox person}}: nationality: "Should only be used if nationality cannot be inferred from the birthplace." In addition, WP:INFOBOXNTLY says that nationality "should be avoided when the country to which the subject belongs can be inferred from the country of birth". After nationality was removed from the infobox for John de Lancie in accordance with this guidance, @124.169.236.71: has restored it twice: [1] and [2]. Multiple messages have been left on User_talk:124.169.236.71 asking and pleading for a discussion to seek concurrence for that and other changes to John de Lancie, but there has been no reply. Rather than edit war, I'm opening this topic for further discussion by 124.169.236.71 and other interested editors, with the hope of resolving the disagreement through communication. – 108.56.139.120 (talk) 03:23, 20 November 2020 (UTC)

Birth date

This is a continuation of the archived discussion about de Lancie's birthdate. See Talk:John_de_Lancie/Archive_1#His_date_of_birth for the previous discussion. I have not been able to locate independent reliable sources for his birthdate. However, de Lancie's own website used to say his birthdate is "March 20, 1948".[1]. While that is a WP:SPS, it is allowed as long as it meets the criteria outlined at WP:ABOUTSELF. There is a also a November 13, 2018 12:42 PM (ET) tweet from de Lancie displaying a photograph of de Lancie holding a cake that reads "Happy 70th Birthday John".[2] I think that some may have misinterpreted that tweet to mean that November 13 is his DOB. But the tweet doesn't actually say that. It says he was "recently" enjoying a cake with family and wonders how he feels about turning 70. It is not specific about the date the photo was taken, nor whether the apparent celebration was actually on his birthdate. Based on all of this, I would not use the tweet as the source of his DOB. The delancie.com link, however, could, in my judgement, be used in the absence of other independent, reliable sources and reporting, even though there is not currently an active page on delancie.com that says that. What do other editors think? – 108.56.139.120 (talk) 04:41, 22 November 2020 (UTC)

The archived delancie.com link is perfectly adequate. There's no requirement that a source be live per WP:LINKROT. Adrian J. Hunter(talkcontribs) 05:29, 22 November 2020 (UTC)
