Sanchez and her daughter had left Puerto Cortes, a major Honduran port north of the capital city, Tegucigalpa, without telling Valera or the couple's three other children, he said.

"Father of Honduran two-year-old who became the face of family separation crisis reveals daughter was never separated from her mother, but the image of her in tears at U.S. border control 'broke his heart'". Daily Mail. Hernandez said he did not support his wife's decision to make the journey with their young daughter in her arms and never got to properly say goodbye

My bolding for emphasis. The father is presently mentioned in this article via the source of the WashPo article by Schmidt/Phillips as saying they were not separated. The above 2 elaborate on further though. The WashPo article also embeds this by Trump Junior:

Should this sarcasm by Donald Trump Jr. be mentioned? This was a reply/retweet to the following:

Enjeti appears to work for the Daily Caller although he links to the above DailyMail article. Which explains the update times:

I'm not really sure why the 4 hour diff, except I guess since the 1st is 4 hours ahead of Eastern Daylight Time, it must be Coordinated Universal Time...

DM obviously could not have initially included Trump Jr's June22 reply to Enjeti by June 21st for initial incarnation of DM article, but after Enjeti responded to DM article and Trump Jr. responded to Enjeti's response, DM must have become aware of this and embedded Trump Jr's reply into the 22nd update.

Does anyone think Reuters would be a preferable source to use over Daily Mail? DM appears to be the first to have reported on this angle (either 5:47pm or 1:47pmm compared to Reuter's 10:44pm) but Reuters might have a better reputation as a source. There appears to be some inconsistency between these two when referring to father by single surname whether to use "Hernandez" or "Valera" so a third source to break the tie would be useful. Here is some tertiary reporting for evaluation:

Mr Varela Hernandez, a ship's captain from Puerto Cortes, Honduras, said he had not spoken to his them, but was informed on Wednesday that they were in custody in Texas. "My heart broke because it's my little girl," he told Spanish language network Univision. "The first time I said that's my little girl when I saw the report. "Of course I cried, it's really hard. I can imagine that my wife was very fearful crossing the border because she took the decision."
  But, he told DailyMail.com, she had repeatedly said she wanted to go to the US for a "better future" and seek work, and left their Honduran hometown without telling him or any of their family members. "I didn't support it. I asked her, why? Why would she want to put our little girl through that?" he told the website. "But it was her decision at the end of the day." Mr Varela Hernandez said his wife set out with their child on June 3, at 6am, and he had not heard from her since. "I never got the chance to say goodbye to my daughter and now all I can do is wait," he said, adding that he hopes they are either granted political asylum or are sent back home. Mr Varela Hernandez said he heard from friends that his wife paid $6,000 (£4,500) to a people smuggler to help her and Yarela across the border.

Telegraph's Harriet Alexander is I expect probably correct about "Varela Hernandez" being a double-barrelled name and it being a mistake to abbreviate that as either just Varela or just Hernandez.

Although I wouldn't necessarily consider Daily Mail notable in its own right, the tweeting of the article by both Bush Jr. and Press Sec Sarah Sanders along with Telegraph reporting on its scoop (3 tertiary reports) sounds like it makes it worth reconsidering.

This tweet by Sanders linking to Daily Mail can also be seen embedded within NBC's article at https://www.nbcnews.com/storyline/immigration-border-crisis/time-issues-correction-photo-crying-2-year-old-migrant-n885836 following the text "Supporters of Trump's stance on immigration, including Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders, took to social media to express their outrage over the way the photo had been represented."

This NBC article also introduces additional data not represented in the article:
