Urban legend removed edit

A very reliable source (once a personal friend of Hargrave's and now a Trustee of the Kibbo Kift Foundation) told me that the paragraph about the Kibbo Kift being particularly interested in birds is nonsense.

  • Kindness to animals was not key among the tenets of the Kibbo Kift.
  • They were not credited with being the first to launch a formal campaign to save an endangered species.
  • A bird called "Yellow-Necked Woods Warbler" simply does not exist (!).
  • There is no "Hargrave Bird Apothecary".

The story has in the meantime spread itself over the internet. The paragraph is a part of this article since 4 November 2005. You might even call it an Urban Legend by now. Many of the sources you'll find for this story will have this Wikipedia-article as a source. I am aware that this may constitute original research, but I believe it's far more important to get rid of a paragraph that is untrue and has no references at all. It is, of course, far more difficult to prove a certain story is wrong than it is to prove it is right. My reliable source told me he is sure the paragraph "was put in, as a joke, or a 'dig', by others", and adds: "The paragraph is completely bogus and inaccurate, but not obvious enough to attract attention. I have even found it quoted, as being authoritative, on other websites!" Seeing that it had no references at all, I decided to remove it. Thank you. Needless to add, the Kibbo Kift website does not mention the word 'bird' even once. Mark in wiki (talk) 12:35, 14 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

It is not a question of original research because the item was not sourced. In that case you can challenge it for any reason and delete it. It might have been better to add a "citation needed" tag for a while, but it was OK to remove the material. It can only be added back with a source added. --Bduke (Discussion) 20:57, 14 January 2010 (UTC)Reply
