Provost Marshall of Grenada edit

Thorne made the assumption that this John Douglas became Provost Marshall of Grenada in 1836, and died there in 1838.[1]

However, there is a gravestone in the Kelton graveyard, near Castle Douglas, Kirkcudbrightshire, which records the death of John Douglas, the son of Robert Douglas of Castle Douglas, as having died on the island of Grenada on 31.7.1838.

In 'Scots in the West Indies 1707-1857 Vol. 11', there is an entry: "John Douglas, ex. Castle Douglas, Provost Marshall of Grenada, died 31 Aug.,1838, heir to Grandfather John Douglas, labourer in Castle Douglas, Kirkcudbrightshire. Reg. 3, Feb.,1837."

J. Douglas was appointed Provost Marshall General of the island of Grenada on 3rd April 1835. A John Douglas was Acting PMG on 25 Nov 1828, and this John Douglas appears to have been Acting Clerk of Council on 11th March 1826.

It seems unlikely these two identities were the same person. Shipsview (talk) 17:47, 27 August 2011 (UTC)Reply
