Why is the first paragraph so forgiving?

Not including the fact that the groups mentioned in the first paragraph have had a seriously troubled relationship with Mr. Vlasak is tantamount to opening an article by saying something like, "Theodore Kaczynski is an American Mathematician who sent mail via the US Postal Service."

The first paragraph should almost certainly point out that the "Phys Committe for Resp. Medicine" has subsequently distanced themselves from Mr. Vlasak and that he was removed from the Board of Directors following an illegal disruption of a seal hunt. Ieshan 15:31, 31 August 2006 (UTC)

Indeed. I tried to edit the first paragraph to reflect alternative view points, but was accused of vandalism. It's odd. Some of the administrators watching these pages are animal right activists themselves. Conflict of interest?

If Vlasak is no longer on the board of directors, or no longer their spokesman, then that should be reflected in the lead. Feel free to do so, with a reliable source, or provide the source here and someone else can edit it accordingly. Regarding the "alternative viewpoints" you mention, you should probably read WP:TERRORIST before adding such unsourced allegations in future. Rockpocket 18:26, 17 August 2007 (UTC)

Quotes

I've expanded this article a little to include a bit more information about him, rather than focusing on what he has said about violence.

I've also expanded the Controversy section to include some more quotes from him. I don't normally like sections to consist of long quotes, but in this case, he is either saying he's been misquoted or quoted out of context, so I felt it was important to include more of what he said than I'd normally prefer to. RP, I removed this because it seemed to be there to undermine him. "He holds staff privileges as a doctor at Riverside Community Hospital in Riverside, California. As of 2007, he had not worked there for 18 months." He works at four different hospitals, according to a number of sources, and no one (not even his most active critics) has denied that he is an active surgeon. Why the focus on this one hospital? I wasn't aware he was working at 4 hospitals, could you provide a source for that? I added this because it seems to suggest that he is not currently working in the medical profession despite all his claims.

The article starts off with a claim that he is "an American trauma surgeon and animal rights activist." and he makes a big deal out of "saving lives every day" Well if he isn't currently doing trauma surgery and hasn't visited his place of work for 18 months, perhaps that is slightly misleading. If we can confirm that he is still a working doctor then I am happy to note the other hospitals he works at and remove the mention that has hadn't been to one for a year and a half. I'm sorry, SV. I have read through that, and the Guardian, Observer and LA Times article, and can find no mention of any hospital other than Riverside. I could be missing it, so if you could point me in the right direction, I would appreciate it. Rockpocket 19:19, 17 January 2008 (UTC)

I found a more detailed source -- the Senate Committee Q&A session, so I added this. I can only find it on an anti-animal rights personal website, where someone has interspersed the testimony with insults, so I didn't use that as a courtesy link. Contradicting quotes

Hi, Jerry Vlasak is quoted in this article for opposing advocacy of killing somebody for animal rights : "I am personally not advocating, condoning or recommending that anybody be killed. I am a physician who saves lives. I spend my entire day saving people's lives. All I am saying, in a historical context, [is that] violence has been used against us as animal rights campaigners and against the animals and is no different from us using violence on the other side."[12]. But on the other side, in one of the source of the article, www.animalliberationpressoffice.org , he is quoted saying "Would I advocate taking five guilty vivisectors' lives to save hundreds of millions of innocent animal lives? Yes, I would" . As these two quotes are contradicting each other, is it relevant to quote only one of the two in this article? Is it NPOV? The contradiction is blatant. Only giving one quote is seriously misleading. I added the second quote but it was immediately reverted with the comment that it adds nothing new. I disagree, both quotes are needed and I am therefore reverting. Leighxucl (talk) 10:30, 10 May 2008 (UTC)

Where does Vlasak work

Can we remove Loma Linda University - they actually sent him a cease-and-desist letter to stop him repeatedly claiming to work there.

The article you cite is unreliable since it is a blog entry on an advocacy web site, however it links to an LA Weekly article in which Vlasak says:

In an e-mail, Vlasak addressed these discrepancies: “I have practiced at both Loma Linda University and Riverside Community Hospital in the past, and still have privileges at the latter location. Your focus on my employment record instead of the suffering of nonhuman animals is deplorable.” [2]

What you say may be partly correct. Do you have a reference that says that he is a full-time activist? Or not an active trauma surgeon? The LA Weekly article does not support those statements - just that he is not on staff, but may have hospital priviledges. Bob98133 (talk) 15:01, 10 June 2008 (UTC)

From LA weekly - "according to Joy Jameson, a spokeswoman at Loma Linda University Medical Center. Jameson says Vlasak resigned from “general surgery” in 1998 — and hasn’t worked at that hospital since then. " So can we please not phrase it "works at Loma Linda". If you want to be accurate, I think you should state that: Vlasak resigned from “general surgery” in 1998 — and hasn’t worked at that hospital [until whatever date the LA Weekly article came out] - since there is no reference to indicate if he has worked there after the article appeared. Aug 2008 attacks
