Issa and Ciise

The Wikipedia naming convention is that pages ought to have their common English name rather than the native name. Ciise therefore ought to redirect to Issa (clan) rather than the other way around. Anyone object? Or anyone want to go ahead and do this? - I'm not too confident in the procedure. Gailtb 07:10, 11 April 2007 (UTC)

Richard Burton's list

The explorer Richard Burton provides a different list of the subclans of the Issa, in his book First Footsteps in East Africa. (In some cases, I cannot match his names to those in the article.) His list is:

1. Rer Wardik (the royal clan)
2. Rer Abdullah
3. Rer Musa
4. Rer Mummasan
5. Rer Guleni
6. Rer Hurroni
7. Rer Urwena
8. Rer Furlabah
9. Rer Gada
10. Rer Ali Addah

Burton then divides the Rer Musa (who he says number half the Issa) into:

• Rer Galan
• Rer Harlah
• Rer Gadishah
• Rer Dubbah
• Rer Kul
• Rer Gedi

Greetings, every Somali knows that clan maps are biased, who is the expert behind this clan map?

You claim the grounds to be inhabited by only a certain clan, which is false. A large part of land is shared among clans. Neither is the Issa clan the only clan in ::Djibouti or the largest in Zeila, which your map claims. The second largest Somali clan in fact in Djibouti is the Gadabuursi.

Even the name of French Somaliland was proposed by a Gadaboursi and the French first signed a treaty with them at Zeila before they signed one with the Issa at the end of the 19th century.

As indicated in Morin (2005:640) the name of “Cote francaise

des Somalis” itself is said to have been proposed by hağği Diideh [Mahad-Ase clan of

Gedebursi. He was Prosperous merchant of Zayla who built the first Mosque in Djibouti

Ğami ar-Rahma in 1891] to the French administration in imitation of British Somaliland.

Even the clans claimed by the map on your map as Hawiye do not identify as Hawiye by lineage: The clans are as follow

All Claim descent from Samaale, but not the Hawiye or even Irir Segment.

The shared partilineal ancestor with the surrounding Hawiye is just Samaale.

So the map is not accurate, but rather biased.

On the right I added a different clan map which points Gadabuursi more towards Dire Dawa, but not within the Gursum woreda which is false since the Gadabuursi are also the biggest clan within the Gursum woreda and based on different researches reach as far as Metehara within the Oromia region. So a map can't accurately point the land inhabited by certain Somali clans.

Also the Issa inhabit as far as within the Afar region, which is something this clan map of yours also doesn't depict. I'll have you know that Shinile zone of the Somali Region of Ethiopia runs more westward.

Greetings, I know that Issa inhabit want so far in the Afar region near the Awash River but Issa live in half Awdal and Shinile zone. The Gadabuursi live in Djibouti city have not see them in Arta or Ali Sabieh. Everysummer they for Borama.

Based on multiple researches the Gadabuursi are the second most biggest Somali clan in Djibouti and according to a French source make up at least 15% of the population in Djibouti. So to claim the Gadabuursi do not inhabit Djibouti is false. Colonial researchers who have claimed to roam the Harawa Valley of the Gadabuursi a century ago, which even the Harawo town in the Shinile Zone is named after mentioned a strong Gadabuursi presence and today still they remain in their lands. In your map you claim it to be only Issa inhabited, which is false. You also claim Issa inhabit more than one half of Awdal, while the Gadabuursi do not, while they are the pre-dominate clan in Awdal, which makes no sense. All in all your map is inaccurate. The Gadabuursi and Issa who inhabit a large chunk of land together are both of the Dir clan. Either be fair and claim the areas are inhabited by both clans or no map should be added at all.
