Mileage Classification of I-695

edit
  • [1] 30.57 miles as I-695 (2.20 mi are "Sections 103(c)(4)(A) & ISTEA")
  • [2] 30.57 miles (2.92 Anne Arundel, 27.65 Baltimore County) as I-695 plus 1.52 miles as I-83 and I-695, 19.37 miles (13.66 Baltimore County, 3.23 Baltimore City, 2.48 Anne Arundel) as MD 695 - total 51.46 miles
  • [3] confirms most of the above; the north end is at the eastbound merge from I-95 north and the south end is at the westbound exit for I-97 south and eastbound merge from I-97 north; toll maintenance is in Anne Arundel from mile 0 to mile 0.76 (the bridge over MD 10 north), all of Baltimore City, and Baltimore County from mile 9.24 (the north end of the railroad bridge just south of exit 42) to mile 13.66 - this makes a total of 8.41 miles - all MD 695 - maintained by the MTA
  • 1989 AASHTO log lists both crossings on US 40 as I-695
  • [4] has an MD 695 shield from April 1978

The map in [6] has the whole Beltway marked with an Interstate shield. Google maps has the same marking.[7] Are any parts still considered MD-695 (and if so, are they only MD or are they dual-signed as true I)? DMacks (talk) 05:20, 10 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
Taking it to Talk:Francis Scott Key Bridge (Baltimore), where some more specific and recent discussion existed. DMacks (talk) 05:47, 10 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
A call to the MdTA has confirmed that the key bridge (and therefore the whole southeast quadrant from 95-75) is NOT interstate grade and is signed MD 695. (Vwlou89 (talk) 17:30, 12 June 2008 (UTC))Reply
Well, it's not signed MD 695, but it is officially labeled as such between I-97 and I-95, and has never been added to the Interstate system. --NE2 17:47, 13 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Mathematical Interest

edit

I'm not sure if this should be added, but mathematician Dror Bar-Natan has an interesting page [8] on the northern I-695/I-95 intersection. Ttwaring 19:58, 9 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

Control Cities

edit

We should add control cities to this page, but I'm not HTML-smart enough to do it, I'll contribute to it after it is made. TechMath 17:16, 25 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

GA review

edit

I'm slightly familiar with this road, having driven over it in the past, although not recently. So that helps in reviewing this one.

First, its weaknesses. The prose could be better, particularly by breaking up some of the run-on sentences (the third one in the second graf under "History" is a beaut in that department). Had I been the writer, I would have used the "MD XXX" form on all references, not just the first, as I tend to in my own articles. But I'm aware there's no consensus within the roads projects yet on this, so I'll defer to the nominator here. I fixed a couple of stylistic errors (song titles always go in quotes), and "portions" takes a plural (as should "remains", I think). There are also a few redlinks that should either have articles created or be delinked until such time as they are.

But I don't find any of this fatal to its effectiveness as an encyclopedia article. Its structure and comprehensiveness tell me what I want to know, and what there is to know. Nor do any glaring unsourced statements pop out. So it's a good article.

Understand, however, that for the same reasons given above I would not support it in its present form for FA. Those will need to be addressed if that status is sought. Daniel Case (talk) 02:46, 8 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

In google maps, in washington dc, there is a stretch of highway from south capitol street to the 11th st bridge labeled I-695/I-395. I'm not sure if google maps made a mistake or it should be included somewhere on this wikipedia page. It is the stretch of interstate that made me search for I-695. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 66.44.122.49 (talk) 19:39, 21 March 2013 (UTC)Reply

MD-695 status revisited

edit

I've just been looking at various Grid Maps made by the Maryland SHA, all dated 2013, and the only two references I see to MD-695 are on the Beltway's short stretch on Map D-13B and the southernmost shield on C-13C (the one with the northeastern 95/695 interchange). All other shields along the stretch identified as MD-695 in the article are I-695 shields, including one just southeast of the 95/695 interchange mentioned and all on Map D-13A which shows the stretch between Maps D-13B and C-13C. I interpret this to mean that MD-695 has been replaced and the two MD shields that I mentioned above were simply overlooked when the others were replaced on the maps. I'll wait for more evidence though before changing the article and the Francis Scott Key Bridge (Baltimore) article. Mapsax (talk) 14:14, 23 July 2014 (UTC)Reply

The HLR as of 2012 inventories the section of I-695 between I-97 and I-95 northeast of Baltimore as MD 695 despite it being signed as I-695. We will have to wait for the 2013 HLR to see if the whole beltway is inventoried as I-695 then change the article if necessary. Dough4872 00:19, 25 July 2014 (UTC)Reply
But don't the grid maps and HLR hold the same clout? Can't the maps be used as an alternate source, at least for now, assuming that the MD-695 shields are now in error? Or is that too big an assumption? Mapsax (talk) 11:58, 25 July 2014 (UTC)Reply
For now I would say to stick with the HLR as that is the official inventory of the road, its mileage, and its status. The map may not reflect official designation and includes the I-695 shields as that is what the section that is officially listed as MD 695 is signed as. Dough4872 00:35, 26 July 2014 (UTC)Reply
@Mapsax: almost ten years later, we have something of an answer. AASTHO approved the redesignation of MD 695 as I-695 at their Spring 2024 Meeting in April.[1] Imzadi 1979  00:00, 3 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Imzadi1979: Thanks for that. Ironic that right now, it's the roadway itself that's the focus and not the designation. I will refer to this at Talk:Francis Scott Key Bridge (Baltimore)#Reference to Maryland Route 695. Mapsax (talk) 01:05, 4 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
Hi there, I've uploaded the USDOT FHWA approval for this change. Please update the article to reflect the fact that the MD 695 designation is no longer extent. I work for Maryland DOT SHA, and we've updated our centerline to reflect the new Interstate (IS) prefix.
