Pedipalps

The caption for File:Tachina fly Gonia capitata feeding honey.jpg says to note the pedipalps, but according to the latter article, pedipalps are only found on members of the subphylum Chelicerata, which flies to belong to. howcheng {chat} 22:23, 22 October 2010 (UTC)

Picture of the day

A macro view of a Gonia capitata fly feeding on honey, showing its proboscis and pedipalps (the two appendages protruding from the proboscis), two types of insect mouthparts. The proboscis actually comprises the labium, a quadrupedal structure, and a sponge-like labellum at the end. Flies eat solid food by secreting saliva and dabbing it over the food item. As the saliva dissolves the food, the solution is then drawn up into the mouth as a liquid. The labellum's surface is covered by minute food channels which form a tube leading to the esophagus, and food is drawn up the channels by capillary action.Photo: Richard Bartz

Mouthparts vs. mouth parts

Mouthparts vs. mouth parts. It seems to me that it should be "Mouth parts". --Polinizador (talk) 20:41, 20 December 2011 (UTC)

Can't support you there. Trophi I could go with, but "mouth parts" I cannot offhand remember having seen in any of probably hundreds of books and articles I have read down the years. Seeing it here thoroughly jarred me. There is little logic to such things, but "mouthparts" is definitely the de facto long-established dominant standard. My uneasy feeling and my recommendations

I'm sorry, but, reading this - just the first few paragraphs - I get a very 'uneasy' feeling - the feeling being this is not written by someone, but, I think it's been copied - verbatim - from high school, or above-level textbooks.

The flow, the word-use, here, is not 'natural; it has a very scholarly feeling, and I don't get that feeling that often.

In addition, this is an encyclopaedia - meaning, it's a place for people to learn.

But, as it is (again - this is just from reading the first few paragraphs), the writing here isn't 'inviting', but, rather in an educational style.

Don't get me wrong; I'm not saying this (nor any) article should be 'dumbed-down', but, it should be written in a style, that let's a person with little, if any understanding get a grasp - and this is the opposite - it's written for people who've already had/have a background in related subjects.

I'd recommend anyone pick up any letter - of any encyclopaedia, and just open it to any article, and start to read. If you are not familiar with the article's subject, it should be written so - if you wanted more on the subject, you'd go research it - but, an encyclopaedia is not - by any definition - the be-all, end-all of any research!
