Notability? edit

Tourist guide books for English speakers in Indonesia have a rich heritage. There were the 'Come to Java' editions put out by the tourist bureau in Batavia in the 1920's. (The 1920s to late 1970s left out for time problem. With the opening up of the topurism industry and lifting of foreigners travelling into Indonesai after the 65-66 overthrow of sukarno - there was a distinct lack of up to date information.

From 1977 to the mid 1990's Bill Daltons 6 editions of the Indonesia Handbook dominated the guide book scene - thousands of copies were printed and Dalton did well just from that title alone. The amount of information in the handbook made it a surrogate 'encyclopedia; of indonesia' for most of the travellers who ventrued through Indonesia in the latye 1907s and into the 1990s when the Lonely Planet edition took over.
