Erroneous move edit
What Romanization is "Hung Mung"? Article titles are supposed to use Pinyin, which is Hong Meng 鴻蒙. Keahapana (talk) 21:18, 10 March 2010 (UTC)
- Yeah, see, here's the deal:
- In the Principia Discordia which is where most people (white ones, anyway) learn about the guy, for some reason he's referred to as Hung Mung. This we can charitably call the "Discordian romanisation" -- ie. Kerry Thornley either had some weird-ass translation of the Zhuangzi, got a corrupted version of the story verbally or just thought it'd be funnier if he changed the name. When I tidied up the page today, I found that in the old (Wade-Giles, probably) Legge translation, he's "Hung Mang", which is reasonable enough. The pinyin is, as you said, Hóng Méng, and I changed the first sentence to reflect the relative importance of these three transliterations [keeping the official one in brackets as I've seen on many other pages].
- I would change the title of the article, but I don't know how to do that, so instead I added a direct to this page from Hong Meng. If you want to tidy it up to fit proper the proper stylistics of Chinese philosophy articles wrt. citing names, please feel free to do so! I am also painfully aware that I elide the whole point of the allegory by saying that Hong Meng "gives an explanation of Daoist doctrine". The whole reason I did anything to this page in the first place is because Hong Meng is referred to at hundun but was not hard linked. Doing so led me to this page and I tidied it up as little as I could, tho' I should have liked to add some of the hundun material at the very least.
