Seems unnecessary. reverie98 July 18, 2006.

Xaviera Hollander

edit

This name had never been spelled using an umlaut (Xaviera Holländer). —The preceding unsigned comment was added by SimonDeDanser (talkcontribs) 16:06, 5 February 2007 (UTC).Reply

The result of the proposal was move to Hollander. It has been established that the version without the dots is the most common one for this dab page--Yannismarou 09:17, 14 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hollander is the is the most common version on this disambig-page, hence I already moved it, but User:Matthead reverted the move, most likely to try to annoy me. I will inform admins about this behaviour. In the mean time, if anyone opposes the move, please write down your objections below. Rex 11:13, 8 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

The self-proclaimed expert in removing personal attacks seems to have missed something here. Regarding the information of admins, I'm looking forward to that: Go, Rex, Go! -- Matthead discuß!     O       06:01, 9 April 2007 (UTC)Reply
I myself strongly Agree of course.Rex 09:56, 9 April 2007 (UTC)Reply
I agree, Hollander is the best title. Not surprisingly, the original title was chosen by User:Sheynhertz-Unbayg, with whom there was considerable trouble with disambiguation pages Olessi 17:19, 8 April 2007 (UTC)Reply
It is obvious that the spelling with ae is derived from the spelling with ä, and some dotless names might have had dots originally (more obvious in names like Muller or Kruger). The 1998 Noble laureate Horst Ludwig Störmer said that he was advised "drop your dots" when arriving in the 1970s US, for example. If the simple "a" version is used, how can the names with ä and ae be explained (and included) then? A misspelling of the original name Hollander? So, do we need 3 separate articles, like Muller, Muller and Mueller? -- Matthead discuß!     O       06:01, 9 April 2007 (UTC)Reply
  • Strong agree Yes it should be without the dots. Hollander is also ENGLISH for inhabitant of Holland. The line about it being German should be listed somewhere way, way, way down the disambig list as this is an encyclopedia and NOT a dictionary. That makes it just one of the 15 meanings of which (the German use included) only 3 have the umlaut. Not a good reason to set it up for the whole page. Arnoutf 23:02, 8 April 2007 (UTC)Reply
As http://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hollander shows, even Dutch Wikipedia does not list any person called Hollander (several called Holland though), but covers only the group of persons living in Holland, called Hollanders. Regarding the ENGLISH term for an inhabitant of Holland, I'll say Dutchman (flying or not) should deserve an honourable mention. If you know Dutch, British or other individual persons called Hollander who do not come directly or indirectly from Germany, please point them out so that we can start counting. In the meanwhile, I'll assume that many Americans called Hollander derive from ancestors that had spelled themselves Holländer. -- Matthead discuß!     O       06:01, 9 April 2007 (UTC)Reply
What Dutch wikipedia does is irrelevant. Your theory on all/most Hollanders coming from Germany is Original Reseach, and even if it were true it would be irrelevant as Hollander without dots would still be more dominant. Rex 09:56, 9 April 2007 (UTC)Reply
ps. Strange that you claim all 3 spellings to be of German origin, but only want the one in German spelling, not the one in Dutch and English. Rex 09:56, 9 April 2007 (UTC)Reply
See Xaviera Hollander (above). Furhtermore origin needs refs and it may as well be the Nederlandse Hollander; that lead to the English names. But that does not matter here; as that is dictionary stuff. We should use the most common English form here (which is Hollander). Arnoutf 10:06, 9 April 2007 (UTC)Reply
