Photo Change

Hippolyta and Mary Marvel

While the DC Hippolyta and Fawcett Hippolyta were never shown to be the same, should we mention that in the Golden age of comics, Mary Marvel derived her strength from Hippolyta? Orville Eastland 02:54, 3 January 2007 (UTC)

I'd have to say, not in this article. During the Golden Age of Comics, Mary Marvel was published by a different company and so this isn't the same Hyppolyta. CovenantD 08:05, 3 January 2007 (UTC)

Hercules rape scene

If you take a look at the back-and-forth reverts on Queen Hippolyta (comics), it would appear that some readers are uncomfortable with the word rape on wikipedia. While I agree that the topic is not a pleasurable one to discuss, I get the impression that certain contributors are trying to hide plot elements for the benefit of their own personal comfort. This is called censorship.

While the image in question does not depict the literal act of sexual rape, I implore readers to seek out the definition of the term, then read this accompanying page from Wonder Woman vol.2 #1 carefully, and tell me that this is not rape. Hercules and his men brutally rape Hippolyta and the Amazons. I realize that depicting a popular character in a negative light does not bode well for future sales of related items, but wikipedia is not a marketing tool. As such, the efforts being made to cover up this information so that DC executives can sell more books is not acceptable. --Taylorheston 23:14, 19 January 2007 (UTC)

I must agree with Taylorhenston. The definition of rape, as spelled out on Dictionary.com, is "an act of plunder, violent seizure, or abuse; despoliation; violation". Using this definition, the scene does indeed depict a rape. Un-PC or not, that is the simple fact of the matter. Artemisboy 22:47, 22 January 2007 (UTC)

Agreed on both counts. I originally wrote the caption in August 2006 and it's been changed a few times. In addition to the fact that the panels do not actually show sexual rape, it's pretty clear from this page that she and the Amazons indeed were. Even without that, the definition provided by Artemisboy is certainly enough to justify the wording. I don't think it needs to be censored. —scarecroe 23:33, 22 January 2007 (UTC)

The censorship is only in your minds. Right from the article: "After stealing Hippolyta's Golden Girdle and abusing and raping the Amazons". So, where's censorship? I see "RAPING" written right there, so please, show me censorship because I can't find it. Careful when looking for meanings of words... if we begin interpreting things literally, this will become a dangerous place. If rape means "an act of plunder, violent seizure, or abuse; despoliation; violation", I think we can say we see lots of rapes in art martial fights. Your "holier than thou" threatening tone aside, it's you who has removed the caption a number of times (hence the censoring). I don't see what martial arts fights have to do with this -- you really need to read the material you're commenting on. Name locations?

First of all, why exactly is the article page at Hippolyta (comics), but the talk page is at Talk:Queen Hippolyta (DC Comics)? Second, is there a reason that this article talking about Wonder Woman's mother is at Hippolyta (comics) and not at Hippolyta (DC Comics)? There is, after all, a DC and a Marvel Hippolyta, which are very different, and the DC Captain Marvel is at Captain Marvel (DC Comics) and the Marvel version is at Captain Marvel (Marvel Comics). Fall from grace?

Apparently Hippolyta fell "from grace" by getting herself raped. Really, this is despicable. ArtistScientist (talk) 11:12, 12 September 2009 (UTC)

No, the "Fall from grace" isn't due to the rape. It's due to the Amazons falling out of favor from the Olympian Gods due to their bloody retribution and going against the purpose of their creation of peace. Artemisboy (talk) 22:18, 30 November 2009 (UTC)

Is this section even necessary anymore? There seems to be quite some discussion on the main article section discussing if Hippolyta was the WWII Wonder Woman or not.
