Nanjemoy area edit

The CCBOE website has a registration assistance page discussing area, which points to a tool page. That page's search results show (for any "Nanjemoy" address) that Lackey is the high school -- along with the vocational program at North Point TEDickey (talk) 20:17, 19 November 2021 (UTC)Reply

If I understand - you are saying that a reader of the claim could, using a registration tool, search and find that the school serves the Nanjemoy area. Clearly this is not the same as the claim being sourced in the article. It appears to me that we do not have a source that states explicitly that the school serves the Nanjemoy area. So technically the claim is original research. Nor does it support that the building is closest to the village of Marbury, Maryland. It's a minor issue and I'm fine with leaving the 'citation needed' in place until someone can locate sources that fully support the sentence. Gab4gab (talk) 21:47, 19 November 2021 (UTC)Reply
It's no more "original research" than someone going to the Census site to get data. (The registration tool doesn't require registration, rather it is a freely-accessible search tool, which you would have discovered if you had followed the links and read the pages. The information isn't tabulated in a static form which would let someone in a hurry just see the numbers. TEDickey (talk) 23:30, 19 November 2021 (UTC)Reply
I did misunderstand. I thought that you meant that the tool would easily show that this school served the entire Nanjemoy area. Now I see that to make that determination the reader would need to enter every address in Nanjemoy. Not really the same as going to the Census cite to get the population of Indian Head, MD. Definitely not a source that explicitly says that this school serves the entire Nanjemoy area. Again you have ignored the Marbury item. I'll put the citation needed back for now since you haven't shown here that the entire sentence is sourced. If it can be sourced feel free to cite those sources and then remove the tag. Removing the unsourced content is an acceptable alternative. Gab4gab (talk) 14:16, 20 November 2021 (UTC)Reply
No, you obviously are not bothering to respond constructively, since you haven't bothered to read the pages I cited. By the way, your last edit to the page was along the same lines: ignoring the discussion and attacking the editor. TEDickey (talk) 14:44, 20 November 2021 (UTC)Reply
I apologize for removing the 'discuss' template. I did go to the pages you linked. The first only mentions Nanjemoy related to Gale-Bailey Elementary School. The second requires the user to provide an address. So a reader of the article wanting to verify, if we cited the tool page, would need to enter an address in Nanjemoy to see if it was served by this school. The article does not say 'the entire Nanjemoy area', rather 'the large Nanjemoy area'. So my comment about every address may have been off base, although there is no mention of partial coverage. I fail to see any attack. Removing maintenance templates that are unresolved is discouraged at WP:WNTRMT, which is not a policy but is good guidance in my opinion. As for ignoring the discussion - this discussion has not suggested that there is not a need for citations to support all the elements of the sentence. So restoring the cn template seems entirely appropriate to me. Interestingly the NCES data has Indian Head in both the mailing and physical addresses. Gab4gab (talk) 15:34, 20 November 2021 (UTC)Reply
There's only about a dozen addresses listed in the search results on that page for Nanjemoy, and does not require anything more from the reader than just that (and likely takes less time to verify by clicking on each than to compose your comments on the page). Regarding "NCES" data, that's just zip-code, which the USPS uses for its own purposes. Generally speaking, a zipcode is associated with a post-office rather than the places within the zipcode. Indian Head is incorporated (and happens to have a post-office), but only accounts for about 5% of the 20640 zip-code (this says 20640 is 41 square-miles). You might find these maps helpful (20640, 20658 and 20662 are the only ones of interest -- the CCBOE map for "Nanjemoy" matches the zipcode): https://maps.huge.info/zip.htm https://www.zipdatamaps.com/20640, as well as https://tools.usps.com/zip-code-lookup.htm?bycitystate (keep in mind other guidance such as WP:BRD and WP:AGF) TEDickey (talk) 16:18, 5 December 2021 (UTC)Reply
A quick check with Google Maps says that the distance from Marbury to the school is 1.3 miles, while the distance from the school to Indian Head is about 3.5 miles. I didn't ignore the comment about Marbury, since most of the attention was on Nanjemoy, but at the same time don't see in the preceding anything more than a confusion about zipcodes versus locations which would require discussion of Marbury. TEDickey (talk) 16:22, 5 December 2021 (UTC)Reply
Do you have any citations you would like to propose that would allow us to remove the citation needed template? Gab4gab (talk) 00:29, 6 December 2021 (UTC)Reply
I think that the CCBOE resource page, with a suitable explanation in the footnote would work for the Nanjemoy comment. Referring to Google maps is less elegant (however other pages simply give a distance, with the implicit assumption that someone can obtain that using a map). TEDickey (talk) 01:43, 6 December 2021 (UTC)Reply
When I searched for Nanjemoy using the tool page I got a list of 27 addresses that have Nanjemoy in the street names. I didn't see that as directly supporting that the Lackey serves the Nanjemoy area. What footnote explanation do you propose? Gab4gab (talk) 14:46, 12 December 2021 (UTC)Reply
The search/map page changed (a lot) since my comment about it a month ago. The list is longer and less informative. I'd trim off the comment about Nanjemoy if there's no usable source. TEDickey (talk) 20:29, 19 December 2021 (UTC)Reply
I'm fine with removing the Nanjemoy comment. Adding a map reference would work to support the Marbury item. Gab4gab (talk) 01:50, 22 December 2021 (UTC)Reply
I trimmed the former, and made links for the latter. I don't see a more suitable template than cite-web TEDickey (talk) 08:36, 22 December 2021 (UTC)Reply
