The "kite" aspect is not very clear

I had to go and read the "flying a kite" article, then come back and re-read this article. It's still not entirely clear to me what went on here. Did Gladstone Sr. make his son write the letter? Did people immediately get that the letter was effectively on behalf of Gladstone? It should be spelled out more explicitly.
