Now that we're down to two potential winners, here are the lineups for the qualification groups. Teams listed in italics are set already (and are independent of which team wins).

If Norway wins WC:
Directly Qualified teams:

• Angola (African champions)
• Argentina (American top team outside the host)
• Brazil (Host)
• Norway (World champions)
• Spain (Best European team outside world champions)
• South Korea (Asian champions)

Qualification group #1:

• Netherlands (WC 2)
• France or Montenegro (winning team in WC 7th place game; WC 7th)
• Japan (Asia runner up)
• Tunisia (Africa runner up)

Qualification group #2:

• Poland or Romania (winning team in WC Bronze medal game; WC 3rd)
• Denmark or Russia (losing team in WC 5th place game; WC 6th)
• France or Montenegro (losing team in WC 7th place game; Europe 3rd)
• Uruguay (America runner up)

Qualification group #3:

• Poland or Romania (losing team in WC Bronze medal game; WC 4th)

I did but didn't find it... it does state 'the best continent', but doesn't explain how the best continent is identified. I also checked IHF's general rules for competitions at http://ihf.info/files/Uploads/NewsAttachments/0_Regulations%20for%20IHF%20Competitions_GB.pdf . It notes that "the continent of the world champion" gets an extra qualification spot in WC events, so it seems plausible that 'best ranked team' determines continents. It does also mention that 'continental rankings' affect the seeding of the groups in Olympics. -- Lejman (talk) 13:55, 14 December 2015 (UTC)

Update, that's probably it. Page 3 in the link I posted show that 'Continent of the U18 Women's World Champion' AND "Second best continent" get extra slots for the next U18 WC. That implies "World Champion" = Best continent. -- Lejman (talk) 14:01, 14 December 2015 (UTC)

That appears to be the case, but I can't find that in the link. Where did you find it? The source http://corporate.olympics.com.au/files/dmfile/Rio2016QualificationSystem-handball.pdf (page 3, again at page 4) states QS1 and 5 will be allocated to the best placed continent at the 2015 World Championship. The best ranked team (QS1) and next best ranked team (QS5) at the respective Continental Qualification event not yet qualified and not yet selected to participate in the IHF Qualification Tournaments will earn the Qualification slot. -- Lejman (talk) 10:35, 15 December 2015 (UTC)

Right, but that doesn't explain what determines which the best placed continent is. It appears to be based on best ranked team from the continent (which is implied by other sources) but FIFA for instance determines continent ranking based on share of points earned in all games between teams from the continent and teams from other continents. -- Lejman (talk) 11:18, 15 December 2015 (UTC)

It means European finish better than Brazil > Korea > Angola. So, 1st ranked continent is Europe > Americas > Asia > Africa. I didn't understand what you don't understand. I think it is clear. Noncommittalp (talk) 11:32, 15 December 2015 (UTC)

Right. Yeah I understand you. Europe is ranked highest because the continents are ranked by the highest ranked team of the continent. The thing that stumps me is that the source never actually states that; it only says "the highest ranked continent" without stating how that is decided. They could've gone by average ranking of the countries from the continent for instance. Anyways, no biggie. -- Lejman (talk) 16:04, 15 December 2015 (UTC)
