The assessed valuation of Hancock County real property, personal property and franchises to tal $7,133,681 Shafer feels that a need for school building construction might present itself within the next two or three years, Presently there is a general school fund in Hancock of $1.50 Owensboro, Ky., Messenger tV per each siuu, and a special school building fund voted tax of $.50. Without income from taxes on the Harvey plant, any new classroom construction brought about by an influx of children of Harvey employes may necessitate an addition to the voted taxation. The school budget now totals $427,817.27. "This is all anticipation," Shafer says, "we can't know for sure what will happen until a good deal later." Of the just-less-than 6,000 Hancock County residents, about 1,350 of them are school students. There are five schools in the county, the two-year-old Hancock County High School, and grade schools in Lewisport, Hawesville and two in outlying rural areas. Shafer says there is still room for about 250 students. "Right now we're dreading what a sudden Influx might do to our means for providing facilities for our children, but I know that in the end we're going to be a better school system and a better community and county for it."
