Revising HIV/AIDS in the Caribbean

I’m interested in substantially editing this article for a number of reasons. Upon first glance, the most striking thing is the pure lack of substantive and relevant information. The article starts off with the assertion that “the Caribbean is the second-most affected region in the world” in terms of AIDS. However, the page itself contains almost nothing besides a few statistics and an attempt to connect the disease with women and homosexuality. A region that is so heavily affected by HIV requires more than two small sections of information and discussion. The HIV/AIDS in Africa article is very detailed and cited well. However, in comparison, this page has a very limited scope for such a complex issue. Almost all of the information is presented without references, limiting the credibility and neutrality of the entire page. While the concepts of “Women and HIV/AIDS” and “Homosexuality and HIV/AIDS” are important to understanding the issue, both sections contain very little detail. I propose adding sections on overview of the topic, the history of HIV/AIDS in the region, the social, economic, and cultural factors that contribute to the spread of the disease, the preventative efforts being undertaken, as well as the specific examples of how HIV/AIDS affects Jamaica, Haiti, Cuba, and Trinidad and Tobago. In my opinion, each of these topics is crucial to fully understanding the issue of HIV/AIDS in the Caribbean. Specifically, I want to discuss the relation of HIV/AIDS to poverty, youth, tourism, homosexuality, and gender in the Caribbean. Further, I hope to detail the availability of and ease of access to healthcare and treatment, as well as different preventative programs sponsored by both the governments and NGOs. I plan on using scholarly sources such as the International Journal on STD & AIDS, The West Indian Medical Journal, Health Policy and Planning, the UNAIDS Report on the Global AIDS Epidemic, and Science. I would greatly appreciate any feedback or suggestions that you all have, as I hope to make the HIV/AIDS in the Caribbean article as strong as possible. Currently, the article is listed as a stub and rated as low-importance. My goal is to increase the ranking on both the quality and importance scale. Twoods158 (talk) 05:48, 4 October 2012 (UTC)

I like the risk groups you added, but I think that the examples of specific countries are fine how they are. If someone is able to contribute more information then we can definitely add subsections, but if there is only 1 subsection of Prevention I feel like it can be incorporated into the overall paragraph. I just rated this article as a C-class from a quick glance. Don't worry about the importance being ranked "low" despite it's high real world importance. It's just a bureaucratic mechanism to help manage/make sense of articles for WP:MED. Biosthmors (talk) 22:03, 23 November 2012 (UTC)
