I would like to suggest the following updates to the company's History. Additions include company expansions into new markets, acquisition by NRG, two major commercial deals (Empire State Building and NFL Super Bowl), and adding relevant citations from third-party sources to verify credibility.

I would like to update the Key People section of the key facts table. The new President is James Steffes. History edit

>>I would like to add new company milestones. See below: Green Mountain Energy began in Vermont in August 1997 as an offshoot of Green Mountain Power to take advantage of electricity deregulation around the country.[1] The company moved its headquarters to its current location in Austin, Texas in September 2000. Green Mountain began serving the Texas competitive market in January 2002, and was the first retailer to offer alternative energy in the state.[2]

Competitors of Green Mountain include Reliant Energy, Texas Power, TXU, Gexa Energy, and Direct Energy.

In August 2009, Green Mountain Energy expanded to the New York City market, serving residential and commercial electricity customers in the Con Edison service territory.[3]

In November 2010, Green Mountain Energy was acquired by [NRG Energy, Inc]. for $350 million.[4] Green Mountain Energy now operates as a standalone subsidiary of NRG. With the acquisition of Green Mountain Energy’s renewable offerings, NRG became one of the largest retailers of green power in the nation.

Green Mountain Energy made national headlines in January 2011 by signing a two-year agreement to provide 100% renewable energy to the Empire State Building, making this the largest commercial green power purchase in New York City at that time. [5] The following year, in February 2012, the company partnered with the National Football League (NFL) to power Super Bowl XLVI with 15 million kWh of renewable energy.[6]

Company background edit

I would like to propose edits to the Company Structure and arrange by product service group. Suggestions include creating subsection on Residential and Commercial services, Products, and Renewable Facilities pointing to verifiable sources.

Residential Services edit

In Texas and New York City, Green Mountain Energy directly serves residential electricity customers who live in a deregulated utility service territory. The company upholds that it is the leading competitive retail electricity provider in the nation dedicated to cleaner energy.[1]

Green Mountain Energy also partners with utilities in regulated markets in the U.S., such as Portland General Electric (PGE) in Oregon, to offer renewable energy products to their customers. Additionally, Green Mountain Energy participates in multi-supplier utility partnering programs in New York and New Jersey.

Products edit

Green Mountain Energy’s flagship residential electricity product is Pollution FreeTM electricity, made from 100% renewable sources. In May 2009 Green Mountain Energy launched the Renewable Rewards® Buy-Back program, which credits customers with renewable generation facilities on their homes for excess energy their facility sends back to the electric grid.Cite error: A <ref> tag is missing the closing </ref> (see the help page).

In April 2011 the company also launched a solar leasing program for residential solar panels.[2]

>>Add: In September 2013, Green Mountain launched SolarSPARC, a 100% solar product available to Texas residential customers. : http://www.greenmountain.com/faqs-solarsparc?qh=YToxOntpOjA7czoxMDoic29sYXJzcGFyYyI7fQ%3D%3D Caitlinconran (talk) 22:15, 6 January 2014 (UTC)Reply

The commercial division began in 2004, and offers business customers the opportunity to reducetheir CO2 emissions footprint by purchasing renewable energy or carbon offsets. Renewable Facilities edit

Green Mountain Energy’s customer demand has helped spur the has been responsible for the development of over 50 wind and solar facilities around the U.S, including more than 35 solar facility donations funded by Green Mountain Energy Sun ClubTM members (previously Big Texas Sun Club®), due to demand from their customers The facilities are owned and operated by third parties and branded as Green Mountain through licensing agreements. 32 of these solar facilities were funded directly from the contributions of Green Mountain customers who are also members of the Green Mountain Energy Sun ClubTM (previously Big Texas Sun Club®).[4]

>>Edit: "...including more than 50 solar facility donations funded by the Green Mountain Energy Sun Club" : http://greenmountainenergysunclub.com/solar-installations/ >>Remove: 32 of these solar facilities were funded directly from the contributions of Green Mountain customers who are also members of the Green Mountain Energy Sun ClubTM >>Add: Green Mountain EnergyTM Sun ClubTM is a program empowering Green Mountain residential customers and employees to donate solar power to sustainably minded non-profit organizations. : http://www.greenmountain.com/about-us/news-room/press-releases/2430-green-mountain-energy-sun-club-donates-285000-to-non-profits-in-texas-for-solar-installations Caitlinconran (talk) 22:15, 6 January 2014 (UTC)Reply

Green Mountain Energy also purchases 100% of the renewable generation from the Green Mountain Energy® Winds Farms—Langford and Elbow Creek to supply their consumers and businesses. Jointly, these two West Texas wind farms can produce up to 7270 megawatts (MW) of clean power.[5]

Removing "BeGreen is a division of Green Mountain that offers carbon offset products to individuals and businesses nationwide. The BeGreen website includes an online calculator to help individuals determine their carbon footprint and offers carbon offsets to neutralize it" because BeGreen is no longer an operating division of Green Mountain. Green Mountain offers carbon offset products to businesses via Green Mountain Solutions. 204.57.75.120 (talk) 23:52, 29 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

The main article reads like an ad... in fact most of the material there seems to exist on the company's website, so that the Wikipedia article adds little. The history of the company, the identity and allegience of its founders, who are the principal owners... this is missing. Neither is there any discussion of the general topic of energy services companies (ESCOs), whether they actually are effective at reducing carbon emissions or whatever or whether they simply make profits by selling the rights to emit carbon dioxide to various other corporations. There is at least one website[17] that argued for a boycott of Green Mountain Energy and addresses some of the above issues, but I don't know how credible the allegations actually are. I would like to suggest adding the Texas Electricity Choice website, www.powertochoose.com, to the "See Also" sources listing.

I would like to add in language about Green Mountain's recent launch into the Pennsylvania market, and update with relevant citation. Will also add mention of "Pennsylvania" in sections where markets are listed.

History edit

In June 2012, Green Mountain Energy expanded to Pennsylvania, serving residential and commercial electricity customers in the PECO and PPL service territories. [6] Lea512 (talk) 15:47, 20 July 2012 (UTC)Reply
