Given that this location is on the National Registry, it rates its own article. Rklawton 14:04, 11 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

I tend to wonder if it's enough on its own (Peoria, Illinois#Registered historic places includes things like the Proctor Recreation Center). On the other hand, Grand View Drive is in both Peoria and Peoria Heights, so unless Peoria Park District becomes an article, this separate article is probably a more appropriate place than the Peoria Heights article. --Closeapple 13:05, 29 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

Merged name

edit

I merged "Grand View Drive" and "Grandview Drive" into one article, using "Grandview Drive" for the merged name because I'm from Peoria and that's how I've grown up seeing it normally spelled. The legal authority for this would be the City of Peoria for the section of the street in Peoria, the Village of Peoria Heights for the section of the street in Peoria Heights, and the Peoria Park District for the park land; however, they don't seem to be consistent.

For anyone who cares, here are some examples with spaces and without. (I'm using "the street" to mean the Drive, "the lower park" to mean the normal-style park at the bottom of the hill, and "the scenic property" to mean the Park District land next to the Drive at the top that gave everything its name in the first place.)

  • Google Maps: Calls the south end of the street (south of Reservoir Dr) "N Grand View Dr", the middle "N Grandview Dr", and the east-west top section "N Grandview Dr" also. Calls the lower park "Grand View Park". Does not label the scenic property at the top. All the wanna-be side streets are labeled with "Grandview" names. See Google Maps link.
  • National Register of Historic Places (National Park Service): Registered as "Grand View Drive" without regard to divisions, but listed twice with the same boundaries so that Peoria and Peoria Heights each receive a location. Note that the National Register designation is, at the federal level, only for funding and honorary purposes; it doesn't carry any official status at the state or local level except as state or local laws intentionally reference it. Also note that the NR isn't that great at details: It still designates the Shore Acres Park clubhouse as Peoria Automobile Club; describes the old Peoria State Hospital as being "Ricketts Ave. and U.S. 24" (they run parallel and never meet); calls the old Central National Bank (now South Side Bank) by the name "Central National Park Building"; and describes "Grand View Drive" as "Roughly bounded by N. Prospect Rd., the Illinois River bluffs, Adams St., and the Grand View Dr. W. right of way", which makes no sense – the "Grand View Dr. W. right of way" is entirely between Prospect and the bluffs for its whole length, and this description has no northern boundary at all.
  • Peoria Park District: This area has been so important to the foundation of the park district that its legal name is still "The Pleasure Driveway and Park District of Peoria". Yet even they aren't consistent: index calls it "Grandview Drive"; park info page calls it "GRANDVIEW DRIVE PARK: 342 acres adjoining Grand View Drive"; Peoria Park District Facilities (image) uses one dot for the whole thing and calls it "Grandview Drive". I seem to remember the sign by the lower park saying "Grand View Park", but I'd have to check.
  • Google Search page counts:
