Sourcing on some of this stuff would be nice. I recall reading about the distinction, but the explanation I got was that Gothic armor was strengthened against crossbow quarrels, not arrows, and was a response to the continued use of the crossbow. (Which killed Richard the Lion-Hearted). Hmm. Not sure that makes sense--I know the Genoese crossbowmen were famous mercenaries. Pope had outlawed the crossbow for Christian vs. Christian warfare, but it was OK vs the infidel... (who also used crossbows). Thus, I would expect plate extra-armored against the crossbow to occur in nations nearest non-Christian lands. Viz: Italy, non Germany. Theblindsage (talk) 06:16, 22 March 2012 (UTC)Reply
