Poorest town?

edit

The income figures make Gosnold one of the poorest towns in Massachusetts. Since this town is largely owned by the Forbes family and has had famous ultra-wealthy residents like William Madison Wood, I think this article needs to provide an explaination. Can anybody give one? Thanks, CSZero (talk) 23:38, 24 June 2009 (UTC)Reply

The answer is John Forbes Kerry (owner of Naushon Island), Edward Kennedy and the corruption of the political system of Massachusetts. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.9.46.242 (talk) 16:47, 25 June 2009 (UTC)Reply
Maybe that actually answers my question although I'm not sure you intended to :-P The wealthy people, such as the two senators you mention, probably don't legally live there and therefore don't factor into the income figures. So, the question is, what do people that actually live on the islands do? I wouldn't think fishing is a job that pays below the poverty line, while 25% of residents are below it. Tourist and resort areas, like Cape Cod, Martha's Vineyard, and Nantucket, have many wealthy residents who are only summer residents and therefore are not counted in the population and income figures. Most of the rest of the population are people who work providing services to these summer residents. Also remember that income is measured by median not by mean (that is, the arithmetic average). The median is the middle point, so if 5 people are making a billion dollars a year, but 20 people are making less than $40,000 a year, the mean income will be less than $40,000. Merger proposal

edit

I propose that Gosnold, Massachusetts and Elizabeth Islands be merged into a single article. Both places are coextensive with each other. 192.107.120.90 (talk) 19:06, 12 January 2018 (UTC)Reply

Oppose The islands are not just the town. Both have their own geography and unique aspects. AmericanAir88 (talk) 23:01, 14 March 2018 (UTC)Reply
