hello i hate this wwebsite it sucks

This is my first article...it probably sucks because I am still a noob so please make any modifications and improvements that may be needed :) Tbere 19:18, 7 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Actually, it's a lot better than most stubs on _living_ people. Chris 07:32, 12 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Is this an article about Cleomenes or Gorgo? Half the page is about the former, which not only further diminishes this historically important figure (Gorgo), but is unnecessary, since Cleomenes has his own Wiki page. Theedge13 (talk) 19:40, 16 November 2013 (UTC)Reply

Wrong

edit

It's misleading to suggest that Cleomenes I was murdered. The source only implies it, the official line is that he committed suicide. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 80.177.28.111 (talk) 19:23, 19 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

It is wrong to claim she was queen of Sparta. That is most probably something following Gorgo after the adaptation of the character in the film '300' which was totally misleading from that of the historical character. The article must be renamed and the term 'Queen of Sparta' must be removed. There was no queen, princess or any other formality regarding the wife of a Spartan King. Also a Spartan King had nothing to do with a king as we know him in medieval European history. Sparta had always two Kings who were descendants from two old noble families. After the state and laws reform of Lycourgos these two families were left providing the state with two Kings who in Greek are termed 'Vasileas' meaning the one who pulls/leads the people. One King was always staying in Sparta commanding a part of the army that was not going to battle while the other was leading the army outside of Sparta in campaigns. Their roles where exchanged in regular basis. Thus kings where more or less no more than the supreme military commanders of the state, something like a modern army general. Their wives had no formal names.

It is wrong to say that in the movie Gorgo "has sex" with a council member to save her husband. If you had seen the movie you'd known that she was basically raped. (xwpisonoma at gmail dot com, 3/24/17) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.194.3.157 (talk) 03:50, 25 March 2017 (UTC)Reply

thanks

edit

thank you NawlinWiki for making to the proper modifications to the article :)

Leonidas was born in 520 BC; Gorgo was born in 510. How is this "at least 20-30 years"????Heatherfire 01:12, 26 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Well Gorgo never actually became a Queen of Sparta, in those times women, although were treated better in Sparta than any other country, were never allowed to rule state and this was always done by two kings. So Gorgo would of just been called a Princess.

Question

edit

Does the name Gorgo share any linguistic kinship with the word "gorgon"?

Unattributed info/personal opinions

edit

This article is full of unattributed information and anonymous personal opinions presented as debates and arguments about what the queen may or may not have done. It needs to be sourced or deleted.Jtcarpet (talk) 23:56, 12 December 2015 (UTC)Reply

Removed sentence disputing Gorgo as first named female cryptographer.

edit

The sentence asserted that such a statement was a "stretch" because she only found a hidden message and didn't decode one. Seeing as "crypto-" means "hidden" and not "coded", Gorgo is by DEFINITION a cryptographer, and a case could be made that she is more truly one than a person who decodes messages. In any case, the point that was being made was contentious, temperamentally motivated, and unworthy of inclusion in a reference article.

Peer Review 1. The Lead Section Although the lead section is good it is really short, a suggestion I have would be to maybe do a brief overview talking about what's going to be in the article but keep it brief so you don't risk repeating yourself later. The lead-in sentence was great and got straight to who she was and fun fact I am working on Cleomenes for my article so fun stuff! 2. Clarity of Article Structure Overall the structure is great and the order you have your sections in makes sense and it flows together pretty well. I would suggest maybe adding a section to the end just after the "children" maybe a historical significance section if you are able to get the information and pull something together that is. 3. Coverage Balance For the most part, the sections are evenly distributed the "CHildren" section is noticeably smaller and it's a little disconcerting I would suggest trying to beef that up more, I think it would make the article feel more complete. I understand that it's hard to write about women in the ancient world because more often than not they are known through their sons or fathers or husbands but I liked how you did your best to keep it focused on Gorgo although there is very little information on her. 4. Content Neutrality the neutrality of the content was great I didn't pick up any certain tone change or bias as a read so you are doing a great job there! I do want to take this time to say that I would suggest going through and making sure that both words in the titles of the sections are capitalized I think it will make them appear more uniform and really diced the sections they just kind of look lopsided when only the first letter of the first word is capitalized. 5. Sources The references looked good I checked a few links and they took me to the right place but I did not check all so I think your should (if you haven't already that is). I did see that there wasn't a bibliography or notes section if you can I would add those just to give the article more credibility. Francinewithaperm (talk) 21:40, 19 November 2021 (UTC)Reply

Article title

edit

The title "Queen of Sparta" is not an accurate description of Gorgo, despite her royal bloodline and marriage to Leonidas I. The title of "queen" did not apply to royal women and wouldn't appear in Greece as a concept until at least a century after her life. I feel like the article title should be changed to "Gorgo of Sparta" or something similar in order to correct what is currently an ahistorical title. — Preceding unsigned comment added by PericlesIsMyWaifu (talkcontribs) 00:44, 2 December 2021 (UTC)Reply
