Introduction

Nick -- Nice idea. This should make a good article. An introduction is needed, and should include a definition of pottery(.......here we go again!). Should we move some of the pottery term definition to the front or crib bits and pieces from pottery texts? I've got a bunch around here. WBardwin 07:00, 24 March 2007 (UTC)

I think some editors make a hobby out of edit wars on important details like definitions -- and they get very good at it. But it is true that clay craftsmen (like me) and people with archaeological training (again, like me) have different definitions of pottery. And, as we've seen, so do chemists, manufacturers and others. I'll try to go with the academic viewpoint and dig into my books. Good to see you too. Thanks for all the work while I've been away. Do we want subsections in the list? Or remain strictly alpha? Possible subsections include:

• Clay composition and ingredients
• Manufacturing Methods
• Tools and Equipment
• Glazing
• Decorating (I have a whole list of decorating terms, some "borrowed" from Italian and Japanese.)

While I did not start the page I like having an alphabetical list to refer to. However.. I might like your way as well because of the menu it will create at top. Goldenrowley 05:03, 5 April 2007 (UTC)

A couple of things...

I like the alphabetical organization. It makes it easy for the user to find an unfamiliar term without having to guess whether it refers to "Manufacturing Methods", "Glazing", etc.

But I can see how an alpha list could become very long and cumbersome if tile decorating terms are added. But, how about a separate glossary of decorating terms?

The term "China Stone" is used in the definition of Bone China, but is never defined. I presume it is "... a medium grained, feldspar-rich partially decomposed granite characterized by the absence of iron-bearing minerals" found in Cornwall. It has its own page in Wikipedia, but there probably should be a separate definition here, and a link to the main page.

"File Clay" is defined roughly as clay used to raise firing temperature. Is this correct or is it clay that resists high temperatures after firing? Used in, say, refractory tile. It may mean both and need disambiguation. It is defined elsewhere in Wikipedia as "...a term applied to a range of refractory clays used in the manufacture of ceramics, especially fire brick."
