The Name

If sombody have UN acceptit evidence that the name of the city is not Gjilani but is Gnjilane, then this articel must be unter the name: Gjilani and the page named "Gnjilane" must be redirect. My evidence you kann see in UNMIK oficiale page and documentation. --Hipi Zhdripi 00:25, 9 April 2006 (UTC)

I have no idea how could the page "Gjilani" redirect to "Gnjilane". The official name is not "Gnjilane" but "Gjilani". There are official document to proov it. I do not know what is the procedure to swap the name rediraction. Anyone knows how to do it? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Liliboy (talkcontribs) 16:45, 12 February 2009 (UTC)

this is how you change the name of the article according to wikipedia "You move the article using the "move" button (you can see it by clicking the downward-pointing arrow to the right of the "edit" button). But in order to do this, you must have an account that has reached autoconfirmed status, meaning it must be at least four days old and have made at least ten edits. If you are not an autoconfirmed user, or the move is controversial, or the page you wish to rename is move protected, visit Wikipedia:Requested moves. You may also request to have an admin grant you confirmed status." (talk 18:55, 14 July 2014 (UTC)
there is a town in iran called gjilan. maybe you should ask iranians, since they have their own sarbani/arbani clan too? and also there is one illyrian tribe called parsi (synonym for persians).89.205.59.148 (talk) 18:04, 29 January 2017 (UTC)

If sambody have a argument Im waitting. In another cases you are going to interpret the dokumets (you are out of UN Law) and you dont have argumet, you dont work for Wikipedia but are destroing the Wikipedia image. I know that my english is not so gut, but a desinformation is not gut for Wikipedia and for the peopel in Kosovo. You can have a problem with "Haage". This tabel is speeken better then I.--Hipi Zhdripi 20:57, 13 April 2006 (UTC)

No argumet

No argumet please dont inteprete the documents

Sombody have putit this Kosovo place in Serbia stub or category or template here with out argumet. We dont have a argumet that Kosovo is part of S/M. We have tha Constitution of this countrie but we have the rez. 1244 wich is more importen for the Wikipedia and is saying that Kosovo it is a part of Yougoslavia and is prototoriat of UN. Till we dont have a clearly argument from UN, aricel about Kosovo must be out of this stub or category or template. Pleas dont make the discution with intepretation or the Law wich are not accordin to 1244. Everybodoy can do that but that is nothing for Wikipedia.--Hipi Zhdripi 04:32, 17 April 2006 (UTC)

– Per WP:CommonName. It is the official name in the Republic of Kosovo, most of the world recognizes Kosovo, it has an overwhelming Albanian majority and the majority of English languages sources prefer Gjilan over Gnjilane. The continuation of Gnjilane is considered an insult to the majority of the town folk. Gjilan - 10,400,000 v [Gnjilane - only 3 million]. Relisted. GjilanGnjilane – Previous move request was closed as "move" with only three users contributing to the discussion, one of whom (the nominator) was actually a sockpuppet of an indefinitely blocked editor. He claimed that "Gjilan" is the common name of the town in English sources, and that the article should be moved per WP:COMMONNAME. That is clearly not true. Evidence he presented (Google search results) is clearly wrong. While he claimed that Google returns 10 million results for "Gjilan", it actually returns just 480,000 results. You can just click the link and check it yourself. If the word "Wikipedia" is excluded from search, it falls to 430,000 (see link). On the other hand, Google English language search for "Gnjilane" returns about 1,800,000 results (see link, "Wikipedia" excluded). When English language books are searched, the result is similar: 1,280 results for "Gjilan" and 20,800 for "Gnjilane". Google News search is also similar: 112 hits for "Gjilan" and 6,600 for "Gnjilane". Google Ngram Viewer may be used, but its results are inconclusive. It shows the use of "Gjilan" rising in recent years, and "Gnjilane" falling, but still the exact preference cannot be concluded from (see: [2] and [3], depends on the level of "smoothing" used). This evidence shows us that, although both names are used by English sources, "Gnjilane" is still more commonly used. Yahoo News uses "Gnjilane", as does The Independent, Human Rights Watch, FOX News, and Radio Free Europe, which is, by the way, financed by the US government. So, I request the article be moved back to "Gnjilane" as the WP:COMMONNAME. Vanjagenije (talk) 18:51, 22 February 2015 (UTC)

  • Oppose - Per WP:CommonName. On a google books search test for English language only books I got 221 books for Gjilan and 139 books for Gnjilane. On a google scholar search test I got 792 journals for Gjilan and 744 journals for Gnjilane. Also Ngram also clearly favours Gjilan and is not "inconclusive" as wrongly claimed by the nominator. So I oppose the requested move on the basis of Common Name in the English Language, Gnjilane is not the common name of the town in the English Language. Also may I point out that the evidence of the nominator is flawed and very weak, first of all raw google searches don't tell us anything about the common name in the English language. The google news search includes other languages and not English only (this is English Wikipedia and we're interested in the common name in the English language). The google books search is wrong and it is based on number of hits, not on how many books the name appears in. Also isolated web pages which use one spelling tells us nothing about the common name, I could do the same for the other name spelling. I don't see what the finances of Radio Free Europe has to do with the common name in the English Language. Regards IJA (talk) 23:32, 22 February 2015 (UTC)
  • Actually, my Google News search results do not include other languages, as I restricted the search to English language. On the other hand, your Google Scholar results are not restricted to English and are full of French and Italian journals. Vanjagenije (talk) 00:37, 23 February 2015 (UTC)
My apologies for Google Scholar, here are the English language only google scholar search results. 491 journals for Gnjilane and 575 journals for Gjilan. IJA (talk) 20:07, 23 February 2015 (UTC)
I was curious as to why 'Gnjilane' got so many hits on google news, so I did some digging. I ran a google news search test for 'Gnjilane' for the past year in the English Language. This is the second page of the search result. Look at the articles, then go to the third page, then the fourth page, then the sixth page ect. You will notice that around 95% of the search results for 'Gnjilane' in the English language for the past year come from the website "InSerbia News". Most of the articles have nothing to do with Kosovo, never mind Gjilan/Gnjilane. I have gone on these articles and clicked Ctrl+F (find) and searched for the word 'Gnjilane' in these articles, in about 95% of cases the word is not found. I don't know why these articles come up when one searches for 'Gnjilane' but it certainly explains why 'Gnjilane' gets so many hits. I did the same again but for 2013, here is the second page of the search results, then go to the third page, then the fourth page, then the sixth page ect. Most of the articles have nothing to do with Gjilan/Gnjilane and it isn't even mentioned in the articles. Anyway, to get round this weird InSerbia News issue, I excluded "InSerbia Newa" from the search results. Here are the google news results for the past year. 22 for Gnjilane -wikipedia -"InSerbia News" and 25 for Gjilan -wikipedia -"InSerbia News". These is fairly equal when one takes into account that a very small minority of InSerbia News articles genuinely mentioned the town. IJA (talk) 20:41, 23 February 2015 (UTC)
