I removed a reference to the court-ordered low-income housing. It is relevant to Yonkers as a whole, but has abolutely nothing to do with Getty Square in particular. Its inclusion gives the impression that the decline of Getty Square has something to do with the low-income housing, when in reality the area declined at least 20 years earlier, and no court-ordered low-income housing was built in Getty Square, or anywhere near it.

Larkin Plaza

edit

I think the photo of Getty Square is actually of Larkin Plaza, site of the Daylighting Project of the Saw Mill River[[1]]. — Preceding unsigned comment added by HamTech87 (talkcontribs) 07:05, 28 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

Excellent; we have someone who knows Yonkers better than I do, since I never heard of Larkin Plaza. I was just passing through when I snapped that picture, bicycling back from Hastings to Wakefield. Google Earth gives Larkin Plaza as 40°56′9.8″N 73°53′57.7″W / 40.936056°N 73.899361°W / 40.936056; -73.899361 which is north of Manor Hall, while my photo is geotagged as 40°56′6.8″N 73°53′57.5″W / 40.935222°N 73.899306°W / 40.935222; -73.899306 which is south of Manor Hall. Meanwhile Google Earth gives Getty Plaza as 40°55′54.7″N 73°53′54.9″W / 40.931861°N 73.898583°W / 40.931861; -73.898583 which is 400 m (quarter mile) south of both those places.
Obviously any or all can be wrong, so just where is Larkin Plaza? And, for that matter, where is Getty Square? Right now the article has no coords. Our words have it abutting the rail station and post office, which are west rather than south of where I think I stood when snapping my picture. A local witness is better than what we've got, but if we have a municipal online document or newspaper report or some such WP:RS that says so, then we'll really be cooking and can move the picture to the Nepperhan Creek article and search the Wikimedia archives for a picture of the real Getty Square. Here is a link to an article and picture of Getty Square. http://www.preservationnation.org/assets/photos-images/preservation-magazine/2004/yonkers4.jpg — Preceding unsigned comment added by HamTech87 (talkcontribs) 01:13, 20 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

All right; that link led only to the picture, but inspired a search that led to http://www.preservationnation.org/magazine/story-of-the-week/2004/trouble-on-the-waterfront.html which says it's about Getty Square and the pictures seem to be at the intersections of Broadway, Main Street, and Palisade Avenue, which is a block or two southeast of where I took my picture of the construction project, which in turn is, what, part of Larkin Plaza? This suggests that Getty Square is on Broadway, and Larkin Plaza is west of Wharburton which suggests in turn that our inclusion of the rail station and post office in Getty Square is wrong. So, I am somewhat less confused, but not yet at all sure of which place names apply officially or in some other usage to what parts of Downtown Yonkers. Jim: I'm not all that great with all the wikipedia codes. The photo is Larkin Plaza, which was built above the Saw Mill River when the river was covered over. It is now being uncovered, or "daylighted," by the City of Yonkers. You are correct in that Getty Square is on Broadway, a block east of Warburton. Follow Main Street from Warburton and you run smack into Getty Square. — Preceding unsigned comment added by HamTech87 (talkcontribs) 04:18, 15 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

I also have to say that the description of Getty Square is clearly from the perspective of someone who does not work or live in the area. It is a very busy crossroads and center of commerce for African-Americans and Latinos living in Yonkers and the Bronx. Major bus lines connect within the square, the area is always filled with people. Storefront occupancy rates are probably similar to more wealthy municipalities in Westchester. And 99 cent stores are now thriving businesses throughout the United States. — Preceding unsigned comment added by HamTech87 (talkcontribs) 04:27, 15 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

Yeah, I too know nothing of the area except when bicycling through on my way between The Bronx and Hastings or Briarcliff or other places north of Yonkers. No big deal if the Wikicodes get screwed up; if the information is good it will attract attention from more experienced editors who will more likely repair than delete it. So, Larkin Plaza is pretty clear to me now but what's its relation to Getty? Is it a northwestern part, or a bordering place on its northwest side, or do I have the directions wrong, or are there any borders of Getty Square that are commonly accepted? Is there a precise central street corner or other recognized center? You mention commerce, which is presumably a defining quality of the place; are apartments or other residences few? Are there major churches, schools, firehouses and other institutions?

This photograph is INCORRECTLY reported to be Getty Square, Yonkers, New York. This photo IS a photograph of Larkin Plaza, Yonkers, New York, looking west toward the Hudson River from roughly Warburton Avenue. The blue and white office building is the former office building of the Herald Statesman newspaper. Beyond the Herald Statesman building and behind it (to the right of the picture) are all buildings which were at one time part of the Otis Elevator manufacturing facility. At the center rear of the photograph is the old New York Central Railroad Station. At the rear left of the picture is the United States Post Office, the Yonkers "Main" Post Office which can be found on the National Register of Historic Places. ..... So, where is Getty Square? Does any picture in Commons:Category:Yonkers, New York or its subcategories show any part of it? Jim.henderson (talk) 04:21, 23 January 2012 (UTC)Reply

Downtown Yonkers and Getty Square are one in the same.

edit

It should be Getty Square (Downtown Yonkers), right? Or does the parentheses refer to a subset? — Preceding unsigned comment added by HamTech87 (talkcontribs) 21:29, 26 February 2014 (UTC)Reply

If possible, it should be just either Downtown Yonkers or Getty Square. In the title you moved it to, it sounds like Getty Square is ambiguous, and that this is referring to the square in Downtown Yonkers as opposed to another location. Epicgenius (talk) 00:48, 27 February 2014 (UTC)Reply

The result of the move request was: moved. Clear consensus to apply WP:UNDAB, and to revert the bold move. Per WP:BRD, this did not even require a discussion, and could have been filed as a technical request. -- BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 10:17, 6 March 2014 (UTC)Reply

Getty Square (Yonkers)Getty Square – The entry is not ambiguous, and should be moved back. Epicgenius (talk) 00:49, 27 February 2014 (UTC)Reply

This move was proposed at WP:RMTR but is brought here for discussion. Since the article was moved recently it seems that opinions differ. Thus 'uncontroversial' may not apply. EdJohnston (talk) 02:57, 27 February 2014 (UTC)Reply

Pre-Colonial History Section needed

No information on the Getty Square area before colonization. Maybe just refer to the Yonkers, New York page? — Preceding unsigned comment added by HamTech87 (talkcontribs) 01:13, 12 March 2014 (UTC)Reply
