Merge

I don't agree with splitting of the historic district. The locality should be the main focus of the article. The historic district is merely a subset (the more densely settled part) of the locality. The history of Georgetown is the history of the NRHP district. Why does the historic district need to be described separately? --Polaron | Talk 19:59, 14 May 2009 (UTC)

Hey, where is this list from? It should probably be added to Georgetown Historic District (Georgetown, Connecticut). I don't think it should be added to the current Georgetown, Connecticut article, anyhow. There is discussion about a possible merger at Talk:Georgetown Historic District (Georgetown, Connecticut). Village or what?

The article describes Georgetown as being a village, and repeats the village term several times. I appreciate that the first usage of the term is now linked to Unincorporated community (Connecticut), so an interested reader can deduce that village is not a defined term. But, is there common usage (or any usage) of Georgetown being a "village"? There are no sources included yet showing any usage of "village", as far as i can tell. The first two external links refer to Georgetown without using that word. The second calls it the "Georgetown section of Redding". Some quick Google searching turns up other Georgetown Villages elsewhere, and also a "Georgetown Village Restoration, Inc." which is a nonprofit that hosts one of those external link pages. (Is Georgetown Village a name that it is now coining? I don't see its pages referring to Georgetown being a village however.) And there is some Georgetown Village Condominiums project, but a condo complex name is a coined term. Overall, it looks to me that the article would be better if it described Georgetown first as being an unincorporated community, then saying that some refer to it as a village, assuming suitable references can in fact be found where the "village" term is used. doncram (talk) 21:10, 19 May 2009 (UTC)

It's all the same in Connecticut -- neighborhood, village, section of town. They're just synonyms for unincorporated community. If a locality is not a town/city/borough, it is a village/neighborhood/section of town. See also [1] --Polaron | Talk 21:26, 19 May 2009 (UTC)

Okay, well, the readers of the encyclopedia, even many who live in Connecticut, do not necessarily know that in Connecticut the term village has no specific legal meaning. Repeating, I think it would be better to explain that this is an article about an unincorporated community which some term as a village. Yes, i believe that there will be references that use the term village. But, by the way, your google search turns up more hits which seem to define Georgetown as being a section within the town of Redding, i.e. just Redding. Including the ones relating to a a new taxing district. It would be relevant to describe that taxing district in this article and to clarify if it is all in Redding. The article may need revision to describe what is currently known as (or becoming known as) the village of Georgetwon is a section of Redding, and to say historically the area of Georgetown has included sections of other town(s), if that can be supported with references. Currently i am not seeing support for the idea that Georgetown the village is in more than one town. I know Georgetown Historic District is in 2 towns, and I gather that Georgetown CDP is in 2 or 3. It just seems obvious to me that if you want to describe Georgetown as a village you need to provide some support for the usage of the village term and some support for whatever boundaries you wish to define for it. doncram (talk) 22:24, 19 May 2009 (UTC)

Because towns have primacy, if one town refuses some action, another town can't do anything about it. The new taxing district aside, look at the articles pertaining to history. Look at a history the settlement of the area. It is obvious it is a village as it is not a municipality. Any named locality that is not a municipality is a village. It's like you're insisting that articles on unincorporated communities in New York should not use the word "hamlet". This is the common local term. --Polaron | Talk 00:55, 20 May 2009 (UTC)
