From Riggheads farm in southern Scotland.

appointed adjutant Royal Marines, 5 March 1776. Served at New York and Halifax. served sea engagements in Indian Ocean. Received his own company in New South Wales Corps, 1792. Served several years there. listed at Battle of Waterloo as a Major-General, was actually at Hal, possibly nearby. died in Edinburgh, 19 December 1825.
