Very nice work

I liked the layot a lot, and the article is very informative. In the climate section, the comparison with Oslo is basically correct (if we look at year average temperature and especially winter temperatures). However, in the summer, from may to august, Oslo is actually warmer than most (all?) of Scotland. Population

Stornoway, the only town of the Hebrides - doesn't Portree count as a town?--JBellis 20:46, 6 March 2006 (UTC)

(Late reply) Quite... depends what you call a "town". In Scotland, I tend to think of fairly small settlements as towns, but in England, these would be villages. The really small Scottish ones, are villages/clachans. Other Hebridean towns that come to mind are Tobermory and Bowmore... not to mention Broadford. --MacRusgail (talk) 14:27, 25 November 2007 (UTC)

Updated and request for help

I've updated some of the sections here, including the lead and will try to flesh out more of them when I can. Some of the sections aren't great, but a bit more substantive, if nothing else. Human Geography

I removed a section that was added recently

There is divided opinion about the optimum population that Scotland can support. One view is that more people are required to drive the economy; the opposing view is that the country is already overcrowded. Using the Dan-Norge Formula which compares the population and productive land area of Scotland with those of Denmark and Norway, it would appear that the optimum population for economic and social stability, together with the highest sustainable standard of living, would be achieved with a population of around 3.4 million. This arises because, although Scotland currently has a similar population to Denmark, and a land area almost twice as large, virtually the entire land area of Denmark is suitable for high quality agriculture or modern hi-tech light engineering, whereas over 65% of Scotland's land area is unproductive hills, mountains and moorlands.

There are perhaps some good things in here, but it is uncited and sounds like a piece of original research. Globaltraveller 13:55, 15 November 2007 (UTC)

Highland-Lowland Divide

Don't agree with this map at all - for example it puts Orkney in the Highlands! There is some discussion of this at Talk:Scottish Highlands --MacRusgail (talk) 14:23, 25 November 2007 (UTC)

Distances to other countries

I have added a sub-section which repeats the information now at the Scotland article for two main reasons.

• The lead mentioned distances to Norway but it was not referred to elsewhere.
• The Scotland article should ideally be using information from this article, not be more detailed than it.

The first few distances had a citation. It may be wrong, but I don't think we can just do our own measurements if there is a source that contradicts them so I have replaced the cited numbers.

Where there is no source I have done a measurement from the nearest place in Scotland to the countries mentioned, not from the mainland. These are (so far as I can see) Unst for Norway, western Shetland for the Faeroes and St Kilda for Iceland. Ben MacDui^Talk/Walk 21:16, 28 November 2007 (UTC)

Looking for the names of three islands

Hello.
I'm preparing detailed maps of Scotland and I'm looking for the names of three little isolated islands 38, 88 and 100 miles West of Mainland of Orkney and about 45 miles North of Lewis and Harris island of Hebrides for the two latest. Can somebody help me ?

Watershed?

Undiscoveredscotland.co.uk and Copyvio

I've been embarking on a broad clear-up of use of this source as its not clear that any editorial standards are applied to it and it has some clear factual errors in other articles. In doing so there were huge chunks of this article sourced solely to it - Generally I try to avoid leaving these un-sourced and replace the source but in this case they also form a wide copyvio of that source (see dcoetzee's duplication detector) so I've removed the material along with the source. Anyone can feel free to write a similar description of the topograpical layout of Scotland as the one I've removed but preferably avoiding that source and using something scholarly instead and as long as it isn't a copyvio of the new source. Coastline and Exclusive Economic Zone

I found information that contradicts the stated and uncited coastline figure: http://www.gov.scot/Topics/marine/seamanagement/nmpihome/admin/EEZ

"Scotland's EEZ "

When did international law start allowing bits of countries (like parts of the UK) to have Exclusive Economic Zones in their own right? 80.5.30.32 (talk) 20:55, 2 July 2017 (UTC)

The EEZ has to be subdivided where more than one jurisdiction is involved. Scots Law applies north of the Scotland-England sea boundary and English Law to the south of it. --MBRZ48 (talk) 20:59, 14 June 2020 (UTC)

EEZ map out of date

The EEZ map showing the Scotland-England sea boundary running due east on the east coast has been inapplicable since 1999 when the boundary was altered to resemble more closely the UNCLOS default based on proximity to the adjacent coast.--MBRZ48 (talk) 21:04, 14 June 2020 (UTC)
