Sources

Just a reminder that all material, most especially in a biography of a living person, that's added to the encyclopedia must include a source for reference. Since the recent additions removed what sources this entry had and added unsourced material, I've reverted to the last revision that did have sources, but please add back in any material that can be cited to a reliable source. Hi Cijournalism, 158.223.87.229 and Cijournalism1, thanks for your contributions! I know Wikipedia policy on reliable sources is really not self-evident (it's totally different from standards in journalism, for instance), so hopefully it'll be helpful if I explain. The idea is that Wikipedia unfortunately does not have the staff to fact-check everything that's added to the encyclopedia. Instead, what we do to ensure accuracy is require that every addition to the encyclopedia comes with a reference to a reliable, secondary source--which basically means, a source we can have confidence someone else already fact-checked, like a major newspaper--that anyone else could go verify if they want. No problem if the source doesn't live online--if you have a print magazine, a book or other kind of medium that would constitute a reliable secondary source, just put in the citation details without a weblink. But it does need to be a source others could check, so there's a related policy of "no original research", since, for instance, readers generally couldn't go re-interview subjects you might have access to. As I say, definitely different from journalism! As an encyclopedia, Wikipedia is only a "tertiary" source, synthesizing what reliable secondary sources have published, rather than a publisher of original investigations.

Since Cijournalism1, you mentioned you work with the subject of this entry, I should also let you know our conflict of interest policy strongly discourages anyone from editing a page they have any affiliation to. If you see any errors, you can report them to this noticeboard or email info-en-q@wikimedia.org with the details and someone will remove them for you. Meanwhile, as journalists, I'm sure you all have many other topics on which you could contribute greatly to the encyclopedia, so I hope you'll stick around and work on unaffiliated pages! The person this article describes, and who died Oct. 22 2016 is Gavin MacFadyen, the name change to Gavin MacFayden appears to be vandalism.
