Here are a couple photos with mostly free licensing that could be used. One [1] and two [2]. Also, should there be some sort of "list of" article on this subject? List of gnome sightings? List of alleged gnome criminal activities? Gnomes wearing bowler hats? Perhaps not. And what about a WPGnomeProject? As Google news indicates a lot of coverage on this subject, I know this article is going to turn out great. The wiki-gnomes are hard workers! This is in-universe. A joke meme has to be discussed as a joke meme, not treated as if it were real-0-it's a genre of Fiction. DGG (talk) 16:40, 10 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

The in-universe version you saw was a revision right after the page had been vandalized by its creator. The current version should be much less in-universe, although I still have some minor concerns. There is a deletion discussion (the result of which will probably be keep) going on here. —Politizer talk/contribs 17:05, 10 December 2008 (UTC)Reply
yes, that seems to be what happened--and I came here because of that very afd. I too can think of a few more improvements--like eliminating or demphasizing the reports of real gnomes, saying "game of" a few times in the last few paragraphs. And I wonder if thoughts of the Harry Potter elves have something to do with the popularity. 17:59, 10 December 2008 (UTC)

More cleanup needed

edit

There's still a lot of anthropomorphizing of gnomes in this article, and portions that I believe fail to accurately reflect the fact that this is supposed to be a joke. For example,

"Residents of Barga have professed both a tolerance of garden gnomes and a willingness to protect them from harm, misuse, and enslavement. Garden gnomes are seen in Barga resting on window sills, gathered in parks, and even watching over the city from the roofs of buildings." (emphasis added)

and similar bits I find pretty objectionable. I'm bringing this up at the talk page, rather than doing the cleanup by myself, because I know what my feelings on the article are and I know my idea of "cleanup" in this case will involve wholesale removal of large portions that I find too anthropomorphic...since I assume that's not the kind of cleanup you want, I'm mentioning it here so you have a chance to give the article some more love and care, rather than the harsh treatment I will give it if I undertake the cleanup myself. —Politizer talk/contribs 08:18, 11 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

I believe your concerns have been addressed.Cbl62 (talk) 02:57, 12 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

Merge

edit

I know you guys are also talking about this at T:TDYK, but I was thinking, why not have Garden Gnome Liberation Front redirect to here (or specifically to the GGLF subsection of this article)? After making sure we merge in any refs and information that are in that article that aren't in here (which is probably not many, because that article is actually smaller than the subsection in this article), I don't think there would be any drawbacks to redirecting. —Politizer talk/contribs 16:37, 12 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

I support the proposed merger. A more complete and comprehensive article is better than scatterings. Ideally the redirect should go to the appropriate section, and not just the whole article.ChildofMidnight (talk) 20:32, 12 December 2008 (UTC)Reply
I agree as w4ell. Cbl62 (talk) 21:33, 12 December 2008 (UTC)Reply
Done. All the refs, information, and links from that article were already in this one (either they were like that from the beginning, or you guys managed to merge it over when I wasn't looking), so there was no longer anything that needed salvaging. —Politizer talk/contribs 22:36, 12 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

Wie Deutsches Gnomben?

edit

Why are all these Garden Gnombes german? espescially the ones holding signs in english?--Dak (talk) 23:48, 17 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

Not sure where those captions originated, but your point is well taken, as the information attached to the image files suggest that they are not German. I have added new captions that match the information from the image files. Cbl62 (talk) 00:12, 18 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

We've run out of things to write about, haven't we? --Bobak (talk) 00:35, 18 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

Amélie?

edit

The first (and only) time I heard/saw something like this was in Amélie -- I haven't found a ref right now, but maybe someone can include a reference to the movie in the article? Shreevatsa (talk) 01:03, 18 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

There's already a reference in there. Cbl62 (talk) 01:06, 18 December 2008 (UTC)Reply
Oops thanks, I hadn't searched properly. (Missed the é) Shreevatsa (talk) 01:08, 18 December 2008 (UTC)Reply
Actually, gnome relocation ("liberation") pre-dates Amélie by many years. I first heard of this type of activity in Sydney in 1978, and personally knew the participants. They stole garden gnomes and relocated them to freeway verges around Sydney. The gnome relocation activity was mainly occurring on the suburbs of the lower North Shore. As far as I know, this is the origin of garden gnome relocation or "liberation". I recall some documentation of this in Sydney newspapers of the time, as it gained public notoriety.John Moss (talk) 16:19, 21 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

Merge?

edit

On second thought: isn't there too much overlap between this article, Travelling gnome prank, and Travelling Gnome? Shreevatsa (talk) 01:07, 18 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

I think they should be merged into one great article. ChildofMidnight (talk) 21:11, 18 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

"Garden gnome liberationists", not a thing

edit

I can't find the phrase "Garden gnome liberationists" in a single reliable source, so I merged the salvageable material from this page to Travelling gnome. See template at the top of this talkpage for edit diffs and the former page history. PermStrump(talk) 15:54, 17 December 2016 (UTC)Reply
