The first European settlement in the area of the Central Highlands Region that surrounds the current locality of Bauhinia probably occurred in the late 1850s. Settlers on Bauhinia Downs Station and others in the vicinity would have developed rough tracks to areas where they could access markets for their produce and obtain supplies. These would have been towards Rockhampton to the north-east, and towards Brisbane much further away to the south-east. The coming of railways in the 1870s would have had a major influence on the end points of roads from Bauhinia. A railway station opened at Duaringa (to the north-east) in 1876, and another at Miles (to the south-east) in 1878. The northern road from Bauhinia (middle segment of the Fitzroy Developmental Road) provides access to Duaringa, while the southern road provides access, via Taroom and Wandoan, to Miles.
