Controversies edit

I expanded the controversies section and I think the Expand Section tag could be removed. Opinions? Jorritboer (talk) 17:39, 7 December 2022 (UTC)Reply

Merge? edit

There is already a section on fairness in Algorithmic bias which this article should go in, once improved anyway. At the moment it reads like a grade school paper.--Max Loungeroom (talk) 06:20, 9 July 2021 (UTC)Reply

I agree. Every section here has a fuller equivalent in a different main article, most of the time algorithmic bias. I added a merge proposal. Nben7070 (talk) 11:54, 18 January 2022 (UTC)Reply

Misleading edit

The section on fairness criteria is technically misleading. If A and R are independent, then indeed P(R=r|A=a)=P(R=r)=P(R=r|A=b) as per the statistical definition. However the text says that 'This means that the probability of being classified by the algorithm in each of the groups is equal for two individuals with different sensitive characteristics.' This is misleading, because it only reliably holds if either no other characteristics C are considered, or else if we have further independence. Otherwise, we might have P(R=r|A=a,C=c) != P(R=r|A=b,C=c) if R and A are not conditionally independent, given C, because pairwise independence does not imply conditional independence. In machine learning setting, it is common that additional variables such as C existMbt19 (talk) 12:03, 13 December 2021 (UTC)Reply

Restructuring edit

I have restructured the first part of the page. Now all the group metrics are inside the "Group Fairness criteria" section, while previously they were oddly separated into 2 different sections. Moreover, I've added a small section on "Individual Fairness". In the next days I'm planning to add also a section on causality-based definitions. All criticisms and comments are welcome.
